Right now I am more optimistic than a few weeks ago and I think that we won't see such price for ETH. I don't even think ETH will go below $80.
Ethereum to $40? No, that cannot be possible, it may go down but I will agree with it going down to $40, I believe it will remain the lowest it has gone or even go higher from there.
if the ETH price hits 40 $, will you buy ETH? even though the price of ETH has dropped, I prefer to buy BTC coins because BTC has the highest value, so I feel comfortable with BTC technology.
Only if BTC will go to $2k, then ETH price become $30-$40. But such prices is too low, many miners already non profitable.

Seriously though, we could very well still see double digits Ether again. Went all the way up to $117 even yesterday but then couldn't hold on for even 5 hours. Once it hits 90 again if it does, anything goes. $40 is only 45% of $90.

This absolute bear market crash is because ICOs did not sell their eth at the time of hype but chose to hold, when the market started shifting panic in ICO teams started and they started to sell their ico funds without many buyers.
I doubt the possibility of Ethereum going as low as $40, I believe it will not GI lesser than $50 that is if it will even go as low as that, but let's say $75.

We can't blame them as it is well known strategy for traders and holders so you can't say that no one wants that to happen. But for those that has it already, of course we don't want to see a very low price but if that happens just prepare yourselves.

the idea of whales in the system is just a way of saying we have serious holders holding a whole long or volumes of crypto currencies in serious vaults and this accounts for their influence in what ever sector they deem fit to invest in such to amass such volumes and control certain degree of demand and supply functionality in their market.
