So, today champions of World Cup will be crowned. What are your thought about final?

This final today is a rematch of the FIBA 2006 finals where on paper, Argentina has the edge and it's no brainer to think so because Pau Gasol is injured in the semis and can't play in the finals and he is the main man of the Spanish Squad but the result of the game is opposite to what many have expected, Spain dominated and dumped Argentina on that game. Argentina should have remember that moment and make that a motivation on this game today.

I am betting for Argentina (already had) as for me nobody has the edge. This might be a close game so i am putting some amount on the +5.5 handicap just in case. Good luck to us.

There were so many upset results in this tournament so far and it will be a great end to the tournament if there is another upset in the finals as well. None of the gambling sites are having odds in favor of Argentina, but their predictions were proved wrong many times. Both the teams are in great form, but Argentina has shown better team bonding and resilience so far.

I can't belittle on how strong Argentina is but Spain can't also be ignored.

Both teams are great and they were able to make it to the finals, I think the toughest will take the crown. Spain would be my guess.

Argentina seems to be very consistent with the way they are playing, we cannot take from them that they are really preparing for this win.
With the odds of Argentina at 2.48, I think that is so attractive, and although Spain is really a strong team due to their NBA players but the Argentina has really played like a good team, all of them are a threat in the floor.

They are fast, they move the ball well, and Scola is having some great confidence and I think even Gasol can't stop him, if they will stay aggressive like the way they have been playing.

I predict Argentina to win the match and I won't be surprised even if Argentina win the match by more than 15 points. The final match in such tournaments is usually close. But Argentina's performance has been really great and very better than Spain.
Before the tournament and even after the first group stage, I didn't expect to see Argentina on the Final match. But now I predict Argentina win the match (+10.5)

First, third place game between Australia and France. In second round these teams already played and it was one of the best matches in this tournament. It's battle of equal opponents and it's difficult to predict winner.
And final - Spain vs Argentina. On the paper Spain are favorites, they have better squad, longer bench and lot of experience in big games like this one. While Argentina don't have big stars, but their defence is amazing and they are playing simple but beautiful basketball in offence. I really would love to see Argentina lifting this trophy.

But what is the exact reasons NBA stars don't join the national team?
Is is about the money that they don't earn from the national federation or is it the fact that NBA teams do not allow them to play in such tournaments?
I don't know the real reason behind that and it's not about money. But AFAIK, they have their own reasons why didn't join the national team, the NBA league is about to start and they are mostly focusing on that.

I think that's the main reason why the other superstars didn't join the team. IMO, NBA is coordinating with their national team and they would love to send their superstars to WC but it's a matter of personal decision.

Even non NBA players have reason why they don't join national teams.  It's about their life I think. Like for example, we have LeBron James that has his taping on his upcoming movie and TACO TUESDAY. And some of them just want to focus in the NBA for the next season. Or vacation.

The topic about stars not playing for their national team is more than their personal lives involve. From NBA teams being greedy on letting their players represent their team to some reasons about injuries happening are also a factor why they are not playing right now. Some reasons involve like what Kobe did on declining to represent USA is he said that he wants to let other players have the chance to represent the team which is also reasonable for him to do. Now that the NBA sees that its not impossible to defeat USA anymore I think this will view it as a wake up call that its not enough to send some few role players in the NBA to represent team USA, we might see a few stars  in the next FIBA world cup because of this season.

Because if I am not mistaken, Ricky Rubio is Spain's main man. He leads the scoring, he plays high level on defense, he is leading on assists and is setting the play. He is the most intellegent guy on the Spanish rooster.
Just a correction. Its *roster Wink
Yes Rubio has a high chance too to become an MVP since he led in scoring and even in assists like you said.

I think one reason is that they are getting ready for the upcoming NBA season. They are afraid that they will get injuries in the FIBA World Cup so they just focus on NBA and backed out in FIBA.

The Serbia made a run in the 3rd and got the win against the Czechs 90-81. Bogdanovic had 31 pts and the assists of Jokic is just insane. Big man and a very good passer Cheesy.

So it is the players' decision not to play for their national team because they are afraid of getting injured and got fired from their teams.
It is all about money i think... If the US basketball federation was giving more money to the players then everybody would want to join the team and never neglect tournaments like the World cup.
It's not that they, these NBA superstars don't want to be a part of the US team anymore, they are more inclined to join an Olympic team than a FIBA world cup, I'm pretty sure once the Olympic comes we'll see a big line up of NBA superstars.

For NBA superstars winning an Olympic gold medal is worth putting in a resume than winning a FIBA cup there's still a lot of talented NBA superstars that can commit to playing in the Olympic, so expect a lot of new superstars will beef up next year Olympic.

Yes for the olympics you definately will.  Who doesnt want to win an Olympic medal  Cheesy.  But the fiba world cup just isnt all that big in the US.  For them risking getting hurt in this tournament just doesnt make sense to most of them. The tournament barely even gets any airtime on espn because there is little interest in it.  I'd argue more people in the US were looking forward to the vegas summer league to see zion play (which he really didnt)

Tournaments like the fiba world cup are just not a big tournament in the US.  And it's not about the money always but players like paul george breaking his leg in an international scrimmage I think definately weighs heavy on some of the US superstars.  It's really just getting a break from competition basketball.  NBA playoffs can run through june, then training camp starts a coue months after for the new season.  With this tourney smushed in the middle it's a lot of basketball for these guys

The 7th place match is nearing completion, and right now the United States is leading by 10 points (70-60) against Poland. May be the win will act as a consolation after the two humiliating defeats. And hopefully, the selectors will pick a full strength national side for the next world cup (2023). The absence of NBA stars proved to be very costly for the US team.

I dont get why people keep saying the same thing over and over.  It's not the "selectors" that put together this team.  The "selectors" went after 35 people and only 4 are on the team.  The players declined to play.  Peoe like Mason plumlee dont even belong starting on an nba team let alone paying for a national select team.

These guys make $20-$30 million a year in the nba.  If they get hurt in international competition it could cost them $100mil plus.  The refereing in international tournaments is terrible usually.  The NBA is long and grueling and either most of these guys have to train hard in the off season to get ready for the season or they want to take that time and spend it relaxing.  Cant blame them.  In the US its NBA championship and then every other tournament is after that.

It is somewhat kind of surprising that people here are all talking about Gasol as the MVP. Did you guys watch the games or just having fun talking about FIBA basketball here?  Huh Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

Yes, Rubio is the other strong candidate for the MVP. But as I said, I'm leaning towards Gasol because of his clutch performance in the semis.

Technically, it is still the "selectors" who put the team together because those who accepted the invitation will have to prove themselves and be selected for a spot on the roster. Unfortunately for the US, many backed out and these "selectors" only had a few to choose from.

My mvp vote could literally go to Scola, I don't care who wins the cup, if Scola plays like he played so far and they still lose, then I would give the cup to Scola for sure, if he sucks and doesn't play well on the finals and causes them to lose then I may pick Gasol.

Rubio is definitely a close second behind Gasol but in this type of tournament we have seen the importance of a great big man, so far almost all the teams that made it to finals, semi finals and so forth all has been the nations who had a decent big, which means not only Gasol had to play great himself but also he had to face against other great big man as well.

Rubio was just a great distributor who scored a bit but Gasol was literally the corner stone of that team that brought the team all the way here. Becoming NBA champions and then world cup winners at the same 3-4 month difference would be amazing for Gasol if they can pull it off.

The United States finish the tournament with a win, as they defeat Poland 87-74 to secure the 7th place. Still they wasted 6 out of the 19 free throws. In around two hours from now, Serbia will be taking on the Czech Republic, for the 5th place playoffs. It is very ironical that two teams who were the favorites to win the tournament are now playing for the 7th place and 5th place respectively...

It's life, I guess.
It seems to me that Serbia's main problem is that they couldn't stand the great pressure of the expectations of the whole nation.
On the other hand, too many players gave up playing for America and while 20 or 30 years ago, Team D would have been strong enough to win the World Cup now the difference between America and the rest of the world is not that big.
