The Philippines mounted a remarkable comeback, showing their strength in the 4th quarter. However, they couldn't overcome Italy's strong 3-point shooting, and fell slightly short. Personally, I find their effort commendable, especially since I placed a bet on them with a +12 handicap – which worked out well. With their journey now concluded, it's time for the team to relax and embrace an early vacation.

FINAL SCORE  83-90

Gilas perforfance is really commendable considering how they can rally against strong team internationally. We are just lack of tactics to beat them but we have a pure skills to rival foreign team which is already enough to be proud for our national team. We need to adjust our strategy next time because all enemy team manage to shut down us on 3rd quarter which is a clear sign that something is wrong on our coaching staff.

I like the effort of Renz Abando as being the most defensive player even with his height disadvantage. Coach Chot should utilize him well on 3rd quarter since this is the quarter that we have lousy defense and offense. All other teams that we encounter can setup screen well to create space to the point guard while we can’t do the same since Clarkson and whoever holds the ball always double team without any help which is painful to watch.  I’m not a believer that our coach is the problem before but having same result on all 3 matches without adjustments shows how enemy team know our weakness and that is the lack of adjustment.

Still good game well played.

The Philippines are facing a tough challenge against Italy. Despite being ranked as the top team in this group, Italy suffered a loss to the Dominican Republic. As a result, they now need a victory to secure their spot in the second round. This situation poses a significant challenge for the Philippines. From what I've gathered, the Philippines must win by at least 13 points to advance to the next round. Given these circumstances, it appears that Italy might have the upper hand and could secure an easy win, what are your thoughts?

Italy needed this win so they would not give the Philippines a breathing air in this game. I really want an upset although it might still not be enough for them to lead by 13 points. The best scenario here is Italy winning by more than 13 points. I expect a heavy blowout win by Italy as they are trying to get the second spot while at the same time trying to boost the team's confidence which is needed in the knockout stage.

I think Chot Reyes the Philippine coach for many years already should be ashamed and give up the job after this event. I remember when he mentioned that the most important during games is the learning experience. Yet most players he coached before are already retired or past prime and are not part of the national pool.

And he has been criticized already, and it seems that he is not bothered at all. Nevertheless, I do agree that he has done a poor job coaching the Gilas team. Their opponents already know what the game plan of team, and that is give the ball to JC and let him do that work.

This is one of the best Gilas team in my recent memory and yet they have a hard time winning games specially that they are the host nation.  Any how, let's see how they fare against Italy here.

It appears that the Philippines might face their worst defeat in this tournament if they don't make a comeback in the second half. The first half has concluded, with the score at 39-48, favoring Italy. The second quarter has been Italy's strongest quarter yet, as they outscored the Philippines by 12 points after trailing by 2 points in the first quarter.

Italy's superiority in the three-point line is evident, given their impressive statistics compared to the Philippines:

Philippines: 6/16, or 37%
Italy: 9/21, or 43%

Unfortunately the miracle I was hoping for, Japan beating Australia, is not happening. It would have been nice to see at least 1 host nation in the next round.  Cry
It's not likely to happen, as Asian teams may not be that strong. As far as I know, only Japan has won a game so far among all Asian teams. It would be a significant accomplishment for them to advance to the second round, perhaps in the future.

They celebrated this one.

Japan in tears after first ever win against European team in FIBA World Cup

In 30 minutes there is a very interesting game with Montenegro vs Lithuania. Both are unbeaten and are looking to take the points of this game to the next round. Lithuania looked really strong in their previous 2 games and I don't see them stopping now. Under normal conditions they should win this easy but the odds are only slightly in their favor for whatever reason.

They need this win (so does Montenegro of course) and will not hold back.

PS: After the 1st quarter the Philippines show some nice resistance against Italy, I hope they can keep this up and maybe add another upset to the tournament.  Grin

I am currently watching the Philippines vs Italy game. As expected, Italy has dominated the game from the very start. The Philippines are still experimenting with their lineup, but they seem to have no answer for Italy's height advantage. Not only that, but Italy's outside shooting percentage is also quite high.

This marks the Philippines' final game, and a loss would result in an early exit from the competition. It's crucial to rally behind the team at this juncture. With the game set to commence in under an hour, it's worth acknowledging that while the odds may be slim, the crowd's persistent support is anticipated. Best of luck to Gilas Pilipinas as they aim for a remarkable upset. Let's hope for an impressive performance and an unexpected victory.

Disappointed with the matches yesterday. Asian, African and Oceanian teams were destroyed by Europeans and Americans. Serbia had an easy win over China, with a margin of 105-63. USA swept the floor with New Zealand, to win by 99-72. And in the third match, Ivory Cost lost to Spain by a margin of 64-94. For me, the only interesting match was the one between South Sudan and Puerto Rico. The former gave a tough fight to Puerto Rico, but eventually lost by the slightest of the margins (96-101). This team shows a lot of promise for sure.

But Japan got a great win against Finland and against a NBA player that is Lauri Markennen and without much help from Yuta Watanabe, from that play Japan got a great spread of scores to Keisei Tominaga , and Hiejima Makoto, that both got 17 points  while Yuki Kawamura was great in making play he almost got a double-double with that 9 assist and 25 points while Josh Hawkinson got a double-double of 19 rebounds and 28 points, Japan just got an upset on Finland,

It was Paulo Banchero that has the most score in team USA while Austin Reaves was great in making play and have 6 assist, surely USA is a prominent team in this league,

He didn't properly utilize his player and used those people who's afraid to shoot then create more turnovers on crucial minutes that's the reason why they lose. If they could just change the management for sure they can get a good result with their campaign.
But let see it still one game if they lose again and didn't have good plays used. Maybe its time for the coach to realize that he's not helping the national team anymore and step down to most deserving one than him.

Yup! he didn't commit with the players that are likely can make a play and he even made them play late the Rotation is awful I can surely say about it, and even though Kai Sotto is not effective against Karl Anthony Towns he doesn't deserve to be left sitting on the bench without trying it again, if there is 1 thing about that for sure Sotto can learned to adjust with his tactics so he deserve a 2nd chance,

It happen again against Angola the rotation is bad the Angola knows about Jordan Clarkson so they will surely go and double team or triple teaming Jordan Clarkson for sure so the best way is if Jordan Clarkson is going to be double played he should make a decision in giving the ball to the free players,

Correct. Greece without Giannis is not really a good team to go against the strong ones, especially the USA. Offense is a big problem for them although I can see they can somehow protect the rim using their height advantage. Speed base though, they are a mismatch to the young roster of the USA.

Iran versus Ivory Coast was one of the close games yesterday but I doubt many of you are watching that game.

Later we have some good games and might be the final game for other countries.
The Philippines facing Italy, the big question of the Filipinos is if we can ever win one game against European teams just like how Japan did it.

How about France? Truly surprising that they have not won any yet. They will be facing Lebanon later and I think this is where they will get their first win.

Montenegro versus Lithuania this game I will definitely be tuned in. The odds are favoring Lithuania but I think I will take the risk of betting for Montenegro.

Good luck with your bets guys.

For sure 1 Antetokounmpo is not enough and because the big gun Antetokounmpo is not with the Greece it is a sure lost for them, and the Greece didn't cover the spread, while the USA pretty much got a great spread against them, even though the USA consist of newer players for the NBA they still perform that great,

They are totally right, at this point our team can beat anybody on a good day. And when/if Franz Wagner comes back we will have 1 more big option on offense, compared to the Australia game.

I hope the coach gives all the the important guy some well deserved rest, I mean limited minutes versus Finland.
We don't need the points and/or the win, it would be the smart decision. Of course it would be nice to win and stay unbeaten ( it's also good for the momentum, but since it's worth nothing it would be smart to not take any risks.

Franz can heal is sprain a little long and Schröder/Theis/Mo shouldn't play more than 20 minutes in my opinion.

They are already performing admirably, having demonstrated their superiority against Australia. Once Franz Wagner returns, their performance is likely to further enhance. In my estimation, this team could develop into a strong contender against Team USA. Schröder's exceptional abilities have been evident, even in the NBA where he has established himself as a clutch player. In this team, he stands as the leader, and with his consistent stellar performances, there's a possibility that they could potentially upset the favorites.

Considering their ranking of 11 before the tournament (as seen on https://www.fiba.basketball/rankingmen), their achievements thus far are genuinely astonishing.

We had a bunch of disappointing matches yesterday. There were no major upsets. I was expecting Greece to put up a bit more resistance against the Americans, but they lost the match by a big margin. Giannis Antetokounmpo's absence seems to have hurt Greece, although his brother Thanasis was included in the squad. USA completely dominated the match and Greece was unable to secure a lead in any of the quarters. BTW, did anyone watched the Serbia vs Puerto Rico match? It was weird. 2nd quarter went for Serbia, by a margin of 30-12. And third quarter was swept by PR, with 18-31. In the end, Serbia had an easy win though.

Congratulations to Cape Verde and South Sudan with their first ever World Cup wins. Well deserved. New Zeland - Jordan was fun game, especially Rondae Hollis-Jefferson 39 points performance. Though it wasn't enough for Jordan to win. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tI1YnQXzNyU Good comment under video which summarizes Mamba style performance:

Tomorrow there isn't many games that really matters. Japan made big upset by kicking out Finland, but I don't see them making something similr against Australia.

I think it was definitely a good close game, and losses happens it is not really a big deal to lose this game and I think it should be important to realize that we are not going to get that much of a big deal out of this, World Cup should be something to care about but unfortunately USA doesn't seem to care all that much, look at their roster, they do not bring in the best players, so lets see when they will lose out, because I bet that this team can't win it all.
As for Team USA, that stack probably should be enough. Yet, they've got one of the best and championship coach which is Kerr and assistant coach, Erik Spoelstra.

With the match between Angola and the Philippines a while ago, I thought that Gilas would be able to beat Angola but Angola is the stronger team. I don't want to blame the coach despite being booed when shown on the screen in the arena. While most of our countrymen's sentiment is about the system and the coach. Anyway, full hate has always been given to Coach Chot as usual when they're beaten, can't blame the fans though.
Too bad for the Team Philippines are they are close enough to take the win and yet, they fall behind on their most important game to get a win, there is so much hate with the coaching staff since then, its too bad for the players to hear such cheer from the crowd, its not motivating at all. With regards to the USA team despite of not being dominant and don't have their NBA star players they still manage to get a win and that could be a good sign for a younger generation to make their own name, and this is a big opportunity for them.

It is a shame because I think the local community was really excited to see their home team progress against other countries.  I think this would be the first time a host nation wouldn't move on right?  Was the Phillipines favored in this last game.  I haven't tracked lines for any games other than the teams I know and am looking to bet on.

The first and second game were really close and honestly I thought that they'll be able to make it despite all of the opinions of many that they'll have the hardest time to beat them. I mean that they were right that the Gilas have the hardest time to beat both of them because they haven't won any single match against them. It's the nation that calls for the coach to step down and this isn't just this time but even for a long time when he's handled the national team. Upon hearing that, yeah, it's not really motivating at all but they know why the crowd reacts like that.

Well, they may not have those star players but these players are still NBA players. Getting into the league is like a lottery because out of the many talented basketball players in the world, they are the chosen few so can be said that it's still a strong team but can be stronger with the stars.

USA might be getting lucky with the wins right now but to be fair to them I do not see them winning the whole thing. They have built a team that could make some profit when the time comes but we have seen it not be all that better so the result is not really that good at this moment, the squad is not that great.

I think it is going to be very tough for them to get the win. Just like the last time out how they lost with Pop, they are going to probably do the same result again as well. It is just not possible for them to get this type of win without having their stars. I am sure one day some stars will do "redeem team" logic and build a big name squad, but until then they are not going to end up getting a good title at all.

Even before the start of the tournament, I am doubtful if the USA will win this tournament. I was tempted to make outright bets on France, Australia, and Canada.

With regards to the lineup of the USA, it is the trend that its biggest superstars are not paying attention to the FIBA World Cup. They're more interested in playing in the Olympics which makes that quadrennial event the biggest basketball event. The mighty USA has always dominated the basketball gold medals in every Olympics ever since I watched television. So it's only the upcoming younger players and the not-so-bigger names are given the chance to represent the USA during FIBA World Cups but they are always the favorites in the betting odds.

Right and I agree with you on that. It was already clear that USA are not that interested to win in FIBA, they just want to qualify towards the next level because their eyes was already fixed on a much bigger prize and just like what you mentioned, the gold medals in Olympics are what they are trying to have. Hence why only the young sprouts of the NBA are playing in FIBA and not the big names. These young ones will suffice, I mean look at the odds, they are already ranked #1, what more if they will send their big dogs.

No dream is too big and no dreamer is too small
Did you watch the Australia vs Germany game? It was a very intense match, very close, and Germany upset the Australians. The last shot by Giddy made me think he was fouled, but there was no time left in the game. That could have led to overtime. What I noticed in the game is that Patty Mills made a lot of mistakes. It seemed like they suddenly changed their strategy when Giddy was able to score consecutive points for the team. I don't understand why; Australia could have won the game.

Yeah France was up 12 going into the 4th and then we witnessed yet another total collapse, amazing. Who would have thought that France would bust out in the group stage already, haha.
