Rand Paul Vows to Filibuster Patriot Act Reauthorization

In a move guaranteed to rock the political establishment left and right, Rand Paul vowed Monday to filibuster any reauthorization of the (Orwellianly named) Patriot Act during an exclusive interview with the Union Leader in New Hampshire.

I’m going to lead the charge in the next couple of weeks as the Patriot Act comes forward. We will be filibustering. We will be trying to stop it. We are not going to let them run over us. And we are going to demand amendments and we are going to make sure the American people know that some of us at least are opposed to unlawful searches. – Sen. Rand Paul

Rand Paul: Hillary turned Libya into a ‘jihadist wonderland’

Republican presidential hopeful Rand Paul lambasted Democratic front-runner Hillary Rodham Clinton Sunday, saying she made Libya a “jihadist wonderland” as secretary of state.

“Hillary Clinton’s war in Libya has made us less safe,” Paul (R-Ky.) told John Catsimatidis on The Answer 970 AM radio. “It made it a hotbed for jihadists, and, in fact, I think Libya now is a jihadist wonderland.”

Rand said it was a “big mistake” for the US to get involved in Libya’s affairs in the first place.
“A lot of times when we topple secular dictators, we’ve gotten chaos and then . . . the rise of radical Islam,” he said.

Rand Paul supports bird flu role of agency he tried to cut

WASHINGTON — Presidential candidate Sen. Rand Paul as recently as 2013 proposed cutting an Agriculture Department agency responsible for studying the spread of poultry diseases such as bird flu, a virus that has killed millions of birds in Iowa the past two weeks.

Paul, a Kentucky Republican, had proposed budget plans as recently as two years ago that backed scrapping the USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service, the National Institute of Food and Agriculture and the Agricultural Research Service, which includes a division responsible for studying ways to predict, treat and control poultry diseases.

Steve Grubbs, Paul's chief Iowa strategist, declined to address specific spending reductions at the USDA or whether the senator continues to support cutting those agencies as he has in past budget proposals.

But Grubbs said Paul favors the government playing an active role in working with farmers to combat bird flu because the virus has spread throughout several states. As a result, the outbreak triggers what's known as the commerce clause in the Constitution, effectively giving the government the power to get involved, he said.

Rand Paul Plays Down Comments on Military Exercise After Mockery

SAN FRANCISCO — Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky has been mocked by liberal pundits who accused him of fanning conspiracy theories about a military exercise along the Texas border, an event that some on the far right believe is a covert effort to impose martial law.

But in an interview this weekend, Mr. Paul said he had no idea what the training exercise — known as Jade Helm — was when he was first asked about it last month on an Iowa radio program.

“Someone on a radio program asked me what it was. I didn’t know,” Mr. Paul said after he christened a new work space for his presidential campaign in the Bay Area. He expressed befuddlement at how his comments about “that ridiculous Jade something” had been blown out of proportion.

“I said sure, I’ll ask my staff to look into it because I didn’t know what it was,” he said.

The comments that drew ridicule by people like Bill Maher, who accused Mr. Paul of pandering to the right-wing fringe, occurred on the Jan Mickelson program. Mr. Mickelson brought up the exercise, telling the senator, “I’d like to know what the rest of the story is on that.”

Mr. Paul replied, “We’ll look at that also.”

I think people are taking it a bit out of proportion, but still there should be an eye on the military as with all the time. I doubt there will be martial law, Texas is not a state to mess with, and especially because of the gun laws there, most of citizens are armed (I believe over 50% of the households)
Most states aren't to mess with as the armament levels among the productive are high. That said, posse comitatus should be loud and clear but the feds still do what they want and push the envelope. It's hard to see that they aren't trying to do something new.

This seems to early a conclusion to make, but if it is Hilary then most likely she would leverage the time of the Clinton admiinistration, jobs, economy, American standards and traditions, and the simplicity as compared to the radically different world we live in today. But a whole lot effort needs to be given to the future of USA,economics, gdp, growth, new bills and regulations,resources,infrstructure,technology,healthcare,jobs...etc
For one, Hillary is already backtracking on certain policies that Bill had going back in his tenure. Also, NAFTA was passed back then and this led to much of the US manufacturing industry to flee abroad, thus crimping the domestic job market. Bill still ran deficits but they were covered up by social security money being transferred into the general fund. They set the stage for the deterioration that was to take place later on and the bush wars only made govt spending even worse all the while more people went on entitlements.

RIP Mommy
We need to get rid of the 2 party system completely.   The candidates that both parties keep putting out are continuously less and less qualified as the years go on.   Our political system can not progress in it's current state.

Or more and more qualified, when you realize that the only real qualification for all the government positions that matter (the ones where they count their own votes), is to be the worst possible evil, successively worse than your predecessor. Less inhibition from committing heinous acts is doubleplusgood! Just a matter of time before POTUS on down can slaughter newborn babies in front of the world's press broadcasting live from the Rose Garden, and watch decades later as they die a natural death a free man/woman, never having suffered any real consequences whatsoever.

Court Ruling on N.S.A.’s Data Collection Jolts Both Defenders and Reformers

A federal appeals court ruling that the National Security Agency’s bulk collection of phone records is illegal has scrambled bipartisan efforts to overhaul the program, emboldening those who say the efforts do not go far enough and undermining Senate Republican leaders who want to keep the current program in place.

Although both chambers of Congress are under Republican control, only the House has coalesced around a bipartisan effort to make substantial changes to the government’s bulk data collection, while the Senate has grown more divided in light of the court’s decision. Emblematic of that, the three declared Senate Republicans running for the White House have adopted different positions on a path forward.

“The sacrifice of our personal liberty for security is and will forever be a false choice,” Senator Rand Paul, Republican of Kentucky, wrote for Time magazine, vowing to block even a short-term extension of the Patriot Act, under which phone data has been collected. “And I refuse to relinquish our constitutional rights to opportunistic and overreaching politicians.”

Rand spoke at Arizona State University yesterday to an audience of about 600+, too bad is was finals' week and a friday but decent and diverse crowd nonetheless.

Not bad...draws almost as many people as Joe Biden.  Wink
The next University visit/speech will have more as daddy-Ron usually corralled at least a thousand to plenty more during his tenure. Rand could've easily doubled attendance if it wasn't finals' week, of course I would've like the whole damn campus to show up.

This early 600+ is good since not too many people are focused on politics right now. Events will get much more exciting after the TV debates get rolling.

They seem pretty balanced and friendly to Rand so far, having him speak on some campuses already. But if WE get involved, it could be a huge resource and tool for Rand. If you go to the site (TurningPointUSA.net) you'll see all kinds of ways you can get involved in your area.

PLEASE do. Organized numbers are so crucial right now! Please post to let me know your thoughts, maybe that you signed up for something, and to keep this thread a live. Thanks.

I'd also add w/ the former link and story that CNN and MSNBC did video pieces on and the MSNBC one had Glenn Greenwald on to comment which is a totally a treat considering how on fire Glenn is considering this whole looking down upon Snowden because of the revelations. Ya gotta see Glenn doing his intelligent, homeworked and thoroughly animated thing in the MSNBC interview link on iroots.

Rand Paul has best week ever with anti NSA ruling

In truth, the U.S. Constitution and Edward Snowden had the best week ever with a federal ruling against NSA bulk collection, but we’ll let things slide by giving Rand Paul the credit. After all, it’s good click bait these days. Scroll down to see the full original court documents.

Quote
Now, they’re saying it’s illegal in that Section 215 of the PATRIOT Act doesn’t authorize that—that the government has gone too far—I think that’s a good first step. We want the Supreme Court to eventually rule on whether this is Constitutional or not. Our main complaint, or one of our main arguments is, the Fourth Amendment says you have to name the person who you want to get a warrant—but not naming anyone and putting “Mr. Verizon” down and saying you can get the records of millions of people, you’re not writing a specific warrant.

You’re writing a generalized warrant. This is one of the things that we fought against that the British were doing to us. James Otis famously argued in court that the writs of assistance that the British were using were non-specific and didn’t use the person’s name—and so we wrote the Fourth Amendment to try to stop this kind of stuff. I guess it’s gratifying that the courts are beginning to recognize the problem. We are anticipating and eager for this to get to the Supreme Court.
