There was an article on Wall Street Journal about wannabe cryptocoins and Gridcoin and a bunch of other ones were mentioned on that list. Pretty cool I think. LOL

I think there are some new improvements in the new version of the Gridcoin client that allows cpu pool mining.

Is CPU mining this coin with BOINC possible and profitable?

I think a good way to get people interested early on, is by giving out freebies in abundance. Is there a thread here at bitcointalk.org where there is free gridcoins being given away?

Regarding Nvidia mining, I have not done it personally but I am sure you can mine LTC with Cudaminer and you should be able to use guiminer with cudaminer and it should work with gridcoin--even in the beta guiminer window.
If anyone has done it please let us know how you are doing.

BTW, we did find a lot of BOINC projects that use the AMD GPUs.  For a while, I thought they were primarily Nvidia, but that is really not the case, it has to do with the particular projects implementation.
MilkyWay for instance can use the radeon to its full capacity and you will see your GRC mining efforts halve on one card when you turn it on-- this is a big hint for the future capabilities (ie working on increasing your avg credits).

@Alien: You should add to the main page that the reward will halve every 840,000 blocks or about 4 years.
Will do as soon as I can get back to the finer things in life, LOL, Aysyr is compiling a ToDo list, and Aysyr will you please put this on my list?

->Also, when a block explorer is created in the future, will it be possible to calculate definitively the outstanding money supply or will we have to continue to estimate (so far 2/3 max block reward)?
It would be interesting to see how close it is running to the estimates, ie the amount of BOINC utilization most miners are using on average..

I am all for writing a block explorer ASAP, and I think what you said here is worthwhile to put in.  We can have it add up all of the mining subsidies in the whole chain and put it on the front page.
Right now it is possible to list unspent outputs in your rpc window and dump that into notepad.  If you can dump it in excel you could add it up.  But I do want to put it on a web page so we can just refresh it!

Thanks guys.

I like this idea, as my nvidia graphics card is regarded as useless for mining, and I think I agree
you could get more people mining and more interested this way.

Check out CUDA miner.

Ye if we can get people with NVidia cards mining too that would be great. Definitely adds to the appeal of the coin.

Quoted from Gridcoin

Quote
In beta,
we are looking into the possibility of
adding a CPU-mining pool for non
gpu-users who want to participate.  We're just testing this
out to see how viable it is. The PoW is done by Berkeley.
The credits are not stored on a single server, they are
stored on 70 official project nodes outside of the coin.
The credit would be checked by a call to an API from
a "different" miner (the miner who solved the GPU block)
to add the Cpu credits to the pool.  The CPU pool would be paid once per day
during their "wallet hour" with an amount of 150grc divided by the cpu miners
going into a separate block and the CPU shares would be their avg daily credits earned.
As the blocks fill up more would be paid at different
times.  The idea is this might spark a lot of interest for non-gpu users and give us a strong
user base.

Do you think you will have instructions to help newbies like myself to learn how to get the cpu
mining working?

@Rumlazy, @Traderman, thread name changed
(Limited by max characters!).
Thank you all for the great ideas.

@Traderman; No surprises, just the Expanded block header to hold
boinc projects, CPUMiner hash,
and the new security information.

The main issue is we will have to have everyone
upgrade relatively soon so the network synchronizes
the new format amongst each other so we keep in place. (Will announce it here and on cryptocointalk ASAP).

We will put out an upgrade to let this change settle
in before enforcing mined blocks that miss this info
(so as not break everyone at the same time)
but shortly after will start enforcing the new security
in the chain for new mined blocks.

Regarding R&D, recently I have been compiling a list of distributed
(official BOINC XML APIs)
that provide avg credit information for non-GPU users
through a special succinct internet interface not designed for web users.
I have uploaded my GRC wallet
address (as a boinc username), and started a team called "Gridcoin".  In beta,
we are looking into the possibility of

+1 seems like good title.

Can you at least change the thread title to reflect that this coin has bionic built in?  (pop3 email too!) It would probably help this coin get a lot more recognition. (which it deserves!)
