- So, bottom line is, with W10 Fall Creator's Update it seems like 18.3.4 drivers & CDM 11.6 is the solution.

We have been using this little tool to completely disable Windows Updates for the past ~year or so now.  They just came out with a v1.1 yesterday, I believe we have been using v1.0. --- https://www.sordum.org/9470/windows-update-blocker-v1-1/ --- I was skeptical of it at first, but it's been working flawlessly on 16 rigs (although not all of them have been running a full year yet.

Thanks to everyone who posted suggestions to fix my GPU0 issue on my 4 6x470 rigs, as well as "the pill" comments.  Here's an update:

- On Saturday, I updated all 4 rigs to driver version 18.3.4 & CDM v11.6 (heard about some stability issues with 11.7).

- 2 days later, 3 of the 4 rigs are running perfectly with no GPU0/OpenCL fail restart issues. the 4th rig crashes about 2 minutes after start of CDM 11.6, so i rolled it back to 11.5 and turned off GPU0. However, this has been my problem rig for quite some time, so I am pretty sure i either have a finicky GPU or a bad riser, which I will try to address soon.

- For the first few hours, on the 3 other rigs, I did have a weird thing occuring in that GPU0 on each rig would drop down to 2-6 Mh/s sporadically.  It usually fixed itself within 5-10 minutes, but if I turned the GPU on/off quickly within CDM, it fixed it immediately.  It was worst of 2 of the 3 rigs, and I discovered that 1 only had 16GB of virtual memory set, so I upped that one to 32GB. The other one was at 32 and I upped it to 48.  Thing is, it didn't fix the issue right away, but overnight Sat and since, all 3 of those rigs have run at full capacity including GPU0.

- So, bottom line is, with W10 Fall Creator's Update it seems like 18.3.4 drivers & CDM 11.6 is the solution.

- On "the pill" front, i cant believe how easy that was!  I simply downloaded and ran the .exe and bam! both my 1080's instantly went from 23.5 to 34!  That's almost like getting an extra 1080 for free, so I will take it and look to donate to that dev team and this is a great tool!

Manged to buy (2) 1070tis at $510 each. Rather unimpressed so far. They're about 50% of the performance of the 1080ti across the board, with about 50% of the consumption.

If 1080tis keep going for $1000 each, it's better to buy the 1080tis than the 1070tis.

I then managed to buy ( 8 ) 1080tis for $6,200 total, so that was a wayyy better deal than the 1070tis!

Are you confident to buy GPUs at this moment?
(because of Asics, FPGAs etc)
Yes. Enough coins have shown they will fork away from known ASICs that there will be money to be made. And at the end of the day I still have hardware that is worth something.

... from a single MSI R7-370 4GB GPU to at least a new single GPU or maybe a dual GPU setup.

- zed

IMHO.

If this is more of a hobby to you, go for it.
For anyone that's investing and seeking a return, buying GPU's today seems ridiculous.

With that PSU, I would add two 1070ti and be done. Adding two 1080ti is not ideal.

It is indeed a hobby miner, but that doesn't mean that I don't want the upgrades to pay for themselves eventually. This rig was originally mining eth and produced enough coins before prices/difficulty got crazy so that it has paid for itself many times over.

Regarding the 1070 Ti versus 1080 Ti and the PSU, what is "normal" power draw for an optimized 1080 Ti? 200 Watts? 300 Watts?
180-200 wats at 70-75 tdp for most 1080tis depending on the what algo you are mining but some can pull over 300 wats of you max it out.Sweet spot is ussualy around 65 tdp as they are most efficient there in wats/hash ratio

A hybrid 1080ti using prebuilt waterblock runs quietly

I have ten left and would sell to you at a good price.

You can go as low as 125 watts. Or as high as 250 watts

160 watts gets max sols for watt.  Zec May fork right now equihash pays close to 3 bucks a day at 160 watt setting.

All my hybrids have more then two years on warranty.

1080ti are good if price is right

I paid well under the 929 price for the Evga.

I would pass that to you.

I also have Msi Corsair I paid 800 for . They list for 1000 on Corsair site.

Got them in Jan  I can sell them under 800.

Ooh La La, C'est Zoom!
Hello folks,

There is a solid group of people with lots of GPU expertise reading this thread so I figured I'd get a decent set of suggestions for upgrading my current GPU rig (see my sig) from a single MSI R7-370 4GB GPU to at least a new single GPU or maybe a dual GPU setup. The mobo can handle 4 GPUs, but I do not want to use risers, hence the two card limit. I also want to tune the cards to optimize output while keeping the fan volume low enough to carry on a normal conversation or watch the TV that is on the shelf above the mining rig (the TV doubles as the monitor for the rig). This rig is currently powered by an EVGA SuperNOVA 650 G2 which I'd like to keep if possible, but will upgrade if needed.

Combinations that seem interesting to me so far are:

I'm not to averse to AMD GPUs so a pair of Radeon RX 500s or a pair of Radeon Vegas are also options, and I am OK getting another SSD and putting another OS on it, though I would prefer a linux variant over MS Windows.

Also, given the current state of the mining space, what would be a good place to point this miner to maximize my returns? Yeah, I know it's not going a monster rig, but it's what I got.

Thanks a ton,

- zed

tbdice is a good hunting ground for me since 2016, my first Scrypt miner A2 was regular lucky blocker there and those were the days when a winning block nets you 50 LTC. Whole different ball game now, even 100 or 200 GHs doesnt even make a dent in getting a block - however you never know like my A2 which was only 120Mhs then. If you have 600GHs, which seems to be the sweet-spot in loshia's solo pool, you can hit a block or two everyday. I normally rent at MRR to try my luck in tbdice and solo.ckpool, every month-end.

My current pool for my group's 35 x L3+ is at Prohashing.com, and get in return 4 different coins.

In these times when tech progresses benefiting creation of Asic miners, it will be a matter of time when Asics will eventually rule the cryptoworld.... I like the idea of converging all types of Asics into 1 single pool - and get coin/s of my choice in return - like prohashing.com and MPH.

That way, I don't have to bother in pools/hash/algo/coins/confirmation/ROI BS, and get paid in the selected coins that I want to focus on.

Phil - Where do you have you L3+ army pointed?  What pool and what are you mining?

House/shed neither are hard to break into really. A smashed window is all a house takes. Depends on what you do to secure either one. In one of the rougher cities I lived in I actually had 3 different mastercraft padlocks and then for good measure 2 screws through the door to the frame. It was excessive. I'm also guessing that you have a fenced backyard, pretty much a must if you are putting this gear in a shed; just my opinion.

Every wood shed package has the option for siding usually a couple hundred bucks, but even just painting/staining the wood will allow it to last 10+ years easily. What I like about wood is that you can easily cut supply and exhaust ventilation holes where you need to in between studs without affecting the overall structure.

Those are some nice mild temperatures.
Go with wood, the initial cost is cheaper. I also find them to be sturdier. Also if you are thinking the typical metal shed everybody's dad had in the backyard, they are pretty flimsy after a while and separate at the seams. Lots of insects that way.
Whatever you get paint it white; helps to keep things cooler in the summer sun.

Well, these temperatures are averages. It will go up to 27C today. But more often than not, it rains so I was wondering whether wood would be the right choice, don't want it to rot within a few months especially with expensive equipment in there. On a different note, how would you secure it? It's probably a lot easier to break into a shed than my house.

I'm thinking about moving my rigs outside of the house, most likely into a shed. I'd be housing around 50 GPUs in there with a view to expand the farm.
Average temps outside:
Month High / Low(°C)
January 7° / 2°
February 7° / 2°
March 10° / 3°
April 13° / 4°
May 16° / 7°
June 19° / 10°
July 21° / 12°
August 21° / 12°
September 18° / 10°
October 14° / 7°
November 10° / 4°
December 7° / 2°

What should I get? Metal or wooden shed? Suggestions are much appreciated.
