I am one of many who seems to have chronic pain. I refuse to take painkillers because of what they can do to my body.
I am basically stuck using ice and heat. I don't have a bathtub so I don't have the option to use things like Epsom salt.
My pain is in my lower back, shoulders, and neck.

What do you do to handle pain?

What can painkillers do to your body?
I mean they are just painkillers made to relief you from pain. You won't die if you try one. It would be better to get a pill rather than leaving your body in pain and damage your muscles more.

Try diverting the pain to somewhere else.. if your back hurts slap yourself really hard in the face... you will soon be distracted enough to not think about the back pain..

Sometimes it can be a useful diversion..

It is best to go to the hospital and undergo a rehabilitation course ..

This disease can be cured, do not be lazy and do not hammer on your health.

Did you go to a doctor? What does he say about this? I take painkillers. I do not think they are very harmful. In general, you can try cooling ointment.

It depends upon the pain. If it is pain brought by heartache. I focus my self to my hobbies and work my self out. If it is physical pain I seek medical help.

I think it's important first to find out what causes the pain. So it is best to seek for a doctor's help. If you already know it is chronic pain, routine stretching helps. Warm compress is also effective.

Once I had a back pain because of a nerve swelling. I wasn't able to move, so I had to visit the hospital and get proper medication. It took me a month to recover. I also had a physical therapy to really recover from it. I think that when we experience a lot of physical pain, we do not just have to settle with a hot compress and over the counter meds, but we have to really visit a specialist to deal with our pains and prescribe meds to take. Now, I am doing Yoga and it really helps me a lot in improving my back pain and general posture.

During the pain, massage could be helpful. In normal days, do exercises.

It depends on the kind of pain.  I'm a hockey player so I tend to fight through pain if necessary.  I go to the gym on non-game days, and after lifting I use foam rollers, do some stretching, and sometimes hang upside down for a bit to improve circulation even further.

These kinds of activities have alleviated most forms of acute pain I've experienced.
