I think at a time of uptrend, a constant increase would be better than an altcoin that instantly gets a 10-times increase in a week.

Well, maybe that's why we really need a solid community to build an Altcoin.
Most of us will just follow the flock when going to invest. Not something cool, but the fact is that's what makes a profit from an altcoin.

To assess a good altcoin it must have following qualities.
1.It should have universal application,mean to say it should have broad application not limited to specific small market.
2.It should be market oriented for example XRP is used for payment transfer purpose and attracting lot of investor for this specific quality.
3.Scalibilty issue solved mean to say high speed per transactions with zero cost. like EOS.

4.Acceptance by large corporation and communities.

You have to analyze the market in the exchange and see which coin where you can put your money for good. You can trust the coin that is already listed and has been tested as many give good feedback on it. You cannot find good coin that has not been listed. You have to find which coin that popular to investors.

It is not a easy game. because there are bulking of alt coins right now in the market. there will be a long practice to predict the alt coin. you can search on youtube different sites for the review, but not heavily rely on these things.

The fact is that the coinMarketCap does not show all the effective coins for today, Therefore I use the ratings of certain exchanges to which I have Trust. You can use either a binary or bittrex.
