It could have been, with many that do it for however many of those who rely solely on airdrop becomes difficult to believe. This is certainly due to their own airdrop indeed many containing scams and of course, see this would be a bad thing for the project. If projects want to succeed then indeed need effort and bounty became the most powerful way. the bounty will help marketing in many things and it gives a good effect to the project running.
I don't think it will run without the hunters. Bounty campaigns needs bounty hunters to do the tasks and they will be paid accordingly to the efforts they have made so its non of their business if the hunters will sell the tokens immediatle or not because there are no rules for that.

Bounty project cannot be known on the market if it is not advertise by the bounty hunters. Using a campaign, the team won't introduced the project but focus only on the development and bounty hunters are the one who responsible to support the project to attract the investors which will also help for the development of the projects.
I think that can happen, many projects without a successful bounty campaign. Not just one project, but a lot has happened. It's usually when you get paid from a bounty campaign. And immediately sell it, I don't think it can be blamed. Because everyone certainly needs income from a bounty campaign.

I think the question is obvious, so what's the point on opening bounty if there is no participant for the bounties (in this case bounty hunter).

Bounty hunters are not just mostly utilised bacause of the publicity they could offer, sometimes they are utilised because they help create liquidity in exchanges as well, they help create sell orders and because they are not constrained by price, they always help kickstart the trading of a coin in a new exchange. But anything is possible, some projects didn't so bounties and they are doing fine, but Much more who conducted are doing fine as well.
of course bounty will not succeed if it is not supported by a bounty hunter, because role of bounty hunter here is very important in promoting a project and can attract interest of all investors

It's possible if they can spend thousands of dollars or worth of bitcoin and eth to advertise their website on facebook google ads and other popular platforms, because these big companies will not accept their own token and they should pay first before they are promoted, if they can do that then they don't need bounty hunters.
Many ICO don't do even bounty program also. They get the attention over the time some invest in paid marketing. Like How Bitcoin gain the attraction over the time. But bounty is a really great way for promotion the project with lower budget also that's why many ICO adopt it.

Bounty hunters is common expression for people who are payed in tokens to promote various projects which have ongoing ICO. It is one form of advertising.
