In my opinion, buy ETH. Because ETH is coin exchange between other coin. ETH is very convenient, cash withdrawal is also very fast.
The good altcoin to buy today is Waves. Its price is really good now, and Waves has a huge potencial for future growth because of great technologies.
Dividing money into investments is a wise thing, with $ 500 then we can buy about 3 coins with good prospects for the future, I recommend making ETH a top priority then NEO and Cardano.

I always get lost when I need to invest, but over time it became cool to get. Do not get lost in your choice and then you will get the most profitable.

I'm just not sure if i should be only focused on the top 10 or can i pick xxx coin that's ranked between #40-#150. I can say i like about 15-20 coins/tokens i just feel that's way to many for $500. I would like to put half in blue chip coin and invest in some alts with the remaining half. I was thinking put $50 into 4 atls???

I think for now just invest in 10 coins/tokens that you've been eyeing since from the start. Like the most stable and profitable ones such as the top 10 in cmc. Then later on you can just save another $500 for other underrated coins/tokens that you like such as those that you said in between rank 40-150. It's hard to really decide which ones to invest in with so little amount to invest. So for you to be able to invest in all of the coins that you really like the best method is to invest first in coins that you are confident in and then maybe once you get profits out of them you can use it to invest in other ones.

With that money you should invest in a project rather than cut it out because the transaction fee can be much larger than expected. That affects your profits. You can diversify your capital half on bitcoin and choose 2 to 3 coin you believe in with high chances price will increase few months from now.

though they crypto market is on correction but my recommendation for potential return in your holding is ETH,NEO and EOS,this altcoins have great potential to rise in high value.
