Well.. people are getting tired of the frequent India vs Pakistan clashes. We had 5-6 of them this year, including those in Asia Cup and Asian Games. The interest is really low. Peak viewership in Hotstar was just 23 million for the India vs Pakistan clash in the world cup, when compared to 44 million for the India vs South Africa match and 43 million for the India vs New Zealand match. Also, Pakistan is not being competitive in recent matches against India, and I believe that the Kiwis will be able to put up a better fight against the Indians.

And it's not like Pakistan gave a tough fight in any ODI match against India. This year every single ODI encounter was one sided and with every defeat, they felt the identity crisis in general and the morale went down for everyone. This added more frustration and it was quite visible from silly statements by Director Mickey Arthur etc.

Kiwis are a dangerous team, and facing them again in the semis is like our own PTSD moment. Grin

If Pakistan makes 400, then they need to bowl out England for 113. It is possible and it has happened before. In this tournament, Australia made 399 and then bowled out Netherlands for 90, which gave them a victory margin of 309 runs. Pakistan needs a victory margin of 287, in order to qualify for the semi-finals. But it is up to them, whether they want to try for that or not. And let's not forget the scenario during Netherlands vs Scotland match in world cup qualifier. Netherlands was faced with an almost impossible scenario to qualify to the world cup, but even then they managed it.

Pakistan need one more win before winning the match against England and that win is to win the toss although winning the toss is totally depends on luck still Pakistani fans will definitely want Pakistan to win the toss today against England. Winning the toss will make it very easy for Pakistan to qualify for the semi finals but not at all but Pakistan will have a chance. We saw Pakistan batting aggressively against New Zealand, if Pakistan can bat aggressively after winning the toss against England and bowl England out within 150 runs with a target of 400 plus runs then Pakistan will have a chance to go to the semi finals. Equations are as simple as reality for us but as difficult, first win the toss then batting very aggressively and there may be many things in between which we are not mentioning now but Pakistan will play a good match against England today for sure.

The equation is that if Pakistan bat first then England need to beat Pakistan by 280 plus runs and if Pakistan bat later they need to win the match in three overs. It is certain that no equation will come in Pakistan's favor but the first equation is more possible than the second equation but the second equation is absolutely impossible.

Just as we have no dream of Pakistan qualifying for the semi-finals, Pakistan may have given up hope. Pakistan players and team management might be satisfied with a win against England as that win will not help them qualify for the semi-finals.

No one would have imagined that Sri Lanka would do so badly against New Zealand today but today is proof that cricket is a game of uncertainty. Any accident on the cricket field cannot be regretted. Sri Lanka's loss to New Zealand ended Pakistan's semi-final dreams. However, we prepare for the next step as soon as we see the semi-final game. Hopefully the semi finals will be very good and very competitive. But I was very hurt by Pakistan's elimination from the semi-final because I thought the semi-final should be between Pakistan and India.

What do you expect from Sri Lanka. In another 5 years or so, it will be really difficult for Sri Lanka to justify their full member status. After the retirement of their star players such as Dilshan and Malinga, Sri Lanka has been on a downward spiral. Even Angelo Mathews is nearing retirement. There are some promising players such as Hasaranga, Pathirana and Theekshana still representing Sri Lanka, but they have been very inconsistent. Hard luck for Pakistan. They wanted Sri Lanka to win, but that never happened.

op You are right today's match was a very important match for both Sri Lanka and New Zealand. But the Sri Lankan batsmen did not perform well due to which they lost by a huge margin against New Zealand today. With this loss, their Champions Trophy run came to an end. But if the match had been a bit tighter then maybe it would have been easier for Pakistan to play the semi-final. Now Pakistan has to match the equation to play semi-final. If Pakistan bat first they need to score 300 plus runs England need to be all out within 100 runs. And if Pakistan gets to bowl first then England have to be all out within 100 runs and Pakistan have to complete the match in 2.5 overs.

The target for New Zealand was that if they could secure victory against Sri Lanka in twenty overs with the fall of fewer wickets, Pakistan would need to win by a minimum margin of 300 runs against England to progress to the next round. Beating England by 300 runs was impossible for Pakistan to catch so definitely New Zealand would have played the semi-final but New Zealand couldn't do it. Batting 23 overs secured a 5 wicket win against Sri Lanka due to which their net run rate is not very comfortable. If Pakistan can beat England by a big margin in the next match, then Pakistan will make a great chance to play in the semi-finals.

Beating England by 300 runs is an impossible task for Pakistan. While it's feasible for Pakistan to score 500 and restrict England to 211, the scenario is only applicable if Pakistan wins the toss. If England wins the toss and elects to bat first, the situation changes.

In my opinion, New Zealand will likely progress, and they should focus on their next match.

Is it possible to create such a gap for Pakistan? Although we often hear in cricket, things happen in cricket that are beyond expectations. England's condition is very bad in this tournament but even if Pakistan has a chance to win by making such a big margin, it is almost impossible. We can say England is bad team in this session but they will not perform badly. So New Zealand will definitely be ahead in the last four. Moreover, New Zealand's early performances in some of the matches have been good and they will surely be able to keep up a competitive match against other opponents.
