Free money is not real. You need to work for it. ICO gives money to those who work for them and those who invest in them. No one will give a free money without anything in return. Haha. You may be referring to an airdrop.
That's fairly true since most ICOs offer bounty that has an array of campaign you can apply to. You can choose signature campaign, Social Media campaign (using your Facebook or Twitter), blogging and youtube, translation and others and you can participate in any of them for free. All that is required is your talent, skills, and of course your precious time.

If you really research your way into every ICO that you are interested in, then you can pretty much never be scammed. You should know every details that the company can offer you before putting anything into the line. You can feel the risk to be less if you know what you are doing or where you are putting your investments into.
