I think diversifying your portfolio is always a good choice but this basket should include strong altcoins, ethereum, iota, stellar lumens, ripple, cardano. These can create a strong base (ethereum) and has a great potential (stellar and cardano)

I know that there are many kinds of alternative coins existing today, but is it better to have that many coins instead of having just a few? What are the benefits and harm in having that many alternative coins?
I prefer to have a lot, not due to the fact that it is necessary, I just consider some of the Coin and if they are impressive with their progress, then I take them. It depends on what you strategy is about. I am trying to hodl the most possible amount of different coins. But it does not mean that I am buying every coin. I spend a lot of time by investigating each token and only after such a process, I am buying some of these coins.

More than one coin investment can be distributed to reduce risk. But I'm not in favor of investing in high-volume coins.

When my friends ask me if its better to have many altcoins, I say that nothing is wrong with that but as long as you value your portfolio, you can modify it with the best coins and useless coins.
But for serious matters, its better to have fewer coins that has larger value than many altcoins.

You never know how this or that coin behaves. It happens that a small little-known coin gives such an increase that it covers all losses and exceeds all expectations. It's better for me to have a lot of different coins in my wallet.
Unlike having a few coins but the strongest only in your portfolio would make you stable though the market has been dropping.

I do not think that it is worth buying as many altcoins as possible, as this will not do any good, but you can not also invest only in one or two altcoins, as it is better to diversify your risks and invest in several good coins.

based on my experience it is better only hold a few altcoins but in large numbers and have done previous research rather than holding many coins because this will make you confused in managing it
besides that, sometimes you'll also miss the good and bad news about the altcoin you hold because there is too much to follow

I think we better to have a few of altcoins, because in this year the most altcoin is worthless.
So, choose some promising altcoins.

Very interesting question, I think you answered it yourself already. I prefer to buy a lot of altcoins because if you keep money in many altcoins, there are more chances to earn money, and if you keep money in one coin, you can lose everything quickly.

It depends on how much do you have, and how much have you spent to have it. Take note that there are over thousands of altcoins existing in the crypto space, and only few has value and usage. Having only few, but smart investment on altcoins can still give you more profit than having tons of shit coins.

it is about risk management. if you buy many altcoin then most likely you will receive avarage profit. if you want more profit, then you should study many coins and try your luck buying only several.
