It seems to me that this is a deliberate provocation against bitcoin. Those who say that it is used for money laundering forget to say that the dollars for this purpose, use more often.
There are a lot of posts in this thread saying that Bitcoin is being used for illegal activities because it provides anonymity, but in fact if you are not paying with Credit Card and use some other precautions cash provides you more anonymity than Bitcoin does. So yes, USD being used and will always be used for illegal activities, like any other cash.
And I agree that the journalists emphasizing that Bitcoin is being used for illegal activities are just showing their incompetence.

The dollar is used for criminal activities because the dollar is an internationnal currency wich everyone use to sell/Trade ect internationnally. So yep the dollar is part of this crimminal activity, but it's surely not the only one.... and can't be blamed for this either...

I think criminal activity will not hurt USD in the long run. It may even strengthen it as it creates demand for the currency. If governments find a way to curb the use of their national currency in illegal activities, they will do it.

It doesn't matter currency form to do such activities. I believe currency is just something which has value and rights to buy something of equal value/weightage. Currency no matter is USD or any other form it can buy those things it's just where are you standing on earth whether is it east side or west side of hemisphere. Each form of currency can be traded anywhere. One can buy things with euro or inr or usd in any country as there are hundreds of ways to do it. So in my opinion it is not the only which is illegal or does it only the one which we can put finger on

It is not that person is doing crime with baseball bat because it is sold for USD. I live in India, me buying baseball ball with rupee will be justified?
I don't think, currency will be affected in any way due to its illegal use till it is fiat currency of country. However, conservatives might try banning anonymous currencies like Bitcoin on the name of crime!

In fact, the US government can always track the illegal movement of dollars. I think that they do so. Gather dirt on the corrupt politicians and get them their desired solutions. To catch corrupt Americans is not profitable. First, it could undermine confidence in the dollar, the corrupt, and it is a very large amount, and secondly the money stolen in other countries and working for the us economy.
Oh yea, especially when they're paying in cash. People are using shell companies, laundering money through casino tokens. There are many ways to do it you can even pay a poor, homeless guy to make a bank account and give you the card, so that you can use an ATM to withdraw cash and disappear. USD is being used for illegal stuff as we speak.
some people out there definitely use usd for illegal transactions. well, I think has a lot to do it. in fact, sometimes they also use bitcoin. but, I guess they will not be able to stop it, although their efforts did really great. because sometimes that they do in secret.
