Hey guys... I was curious to know how the heatsinks and fans are performing as far as temperature is concerned at stock and overclock speeds. I performed the CFD/Heat-transfer modeling on these to make sure everything was going to function satisfactorily and was interested to know how accurate my model was... I also feel partly responsible for the end product performance as well.

If I recall, my models predicted between 45-50C, assuming perfect contact with the thermal vias and I think the fan at almost full speed. How close was it?

I'm seeing a bit higher.  My miners operating in a 22C room hover between 54-59, and my miners operating in a non-climate-controlled ~5-15C room run comfortably between 50-56, mostly on the lower end.  All @ 350 MHz with fans at 100%, but currently no auxiliary fans.

I recompiled cgminer's klondike driver to up cutoff temp, so still quite stable and manageable even if they are running slightly warm.

Based on Ambient temp 20 or 25C?

With Ambient around 23-25 I see 50-54C in overclocked state (350MHz) and 44-45 in same overclocked state with same Ambient temp when thermal goop is applied sparsely (ie correctly).

I have additional table fan blowing across the miners' back side. If I recall this helps to get temps down 3-4C

Just a FYI for people having issues with fan control - I have been mining without the fans connected to the fan header, just connected to power, for a couple months with no issues.  I only have 2 miners and heat hasn't been a problem at all. So I would suggest not using the fan header if it isn't absolutely necessary as it seems to be a pain in the butt to get to work properly.

It's seem strange that the power pins next to the micro usb port won't power the fan.



Those pins do power the fan (and control its speed).  Try disconnecting and reconnecting after providing power to the miner.

Connect the fan AFTER the unit is mining,some sort of issue about connecting BEFORE the unit is mining.I personally power them separately,not from the board.

Those pins do power the fan (and control its speed).  Try disconnecting and reconnecting after providing power to the miner.

I believe those are the fan headers - for controlling the fan speed.  The fan still needs to be connected to a power source to operate...

My miners showed up on Friday, they've been hashing ever since I got them hooked up friday evening.
Guess my refund issues have been resolved Smiley
hopefully they'll break even with 6 more months of hashing.

Also I bought myself some fans http://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/FFB0912VHE/603-1430-ND/2560554 to replace the stock ones.

Think they may make an impact on overclock headroom? At least there will be more noise Wink



The fans on the heatsink are fine,you need to cool the backside,VERY important............he used artic silver,but it is non conducive type,won't carry electricity  Wink  

With the backside being cooled by at least a fan with .35 amp draw,not sure of cfm,my temps went from 63C down to 46-50  Wink

The fan I used below is a 1 amp 120mmx120mmx38mm old cpu fan.Temps are 46C on all 4 miners @ 350mhz  Grin

Yeah was gonna use the stock fans to cool the backside, right now I got a table fan blowing across the backside of all 5 units.

I was talking about thermal resistance, not electrical resistance (it's non-conductive so as a pretty insane electrical resistance there)

I scraped off the arctic silver on one of them and applied Noctua goop (what I had on hand), but a lot LESS than was on there to begin with, spread it out thinner, then reapplied the heatsink. That miner now run 10 celcius degrees cooler. I have taken it successfully up to 360, but the others don't want to go there stably, yet.

4 miners rund between 50 and 54 degrees, and the one with proper amounts of goop run at 43-44 @ 355

Arctic Silver (5?) should have about the same thermal resistance as the noctua goop. (I'm asking about the goop because of the insane temp difference, thinking it could be some chinese crap)

I'm not too worried about the chips, but the regulators do need their cooling.

All I'm saying is pitchforks come out.  Steamboat makes an appearance.  We all are happy.  Then we get agitated with no action.  Repeat cycle.

For some, this is acceptable, others not.  I was previously in the acceptable phase...  I was under the false assumption that the assembly refunds were a lengthy process until i did a little scooby doo research.  I get that people are assholes and those who were not part of the G.B. submit requests for "their" chips/assembly/hosting when they don't deserve it just to cloud up his records and to potentially "score". I have not seen any legimate G.B. from the point of refunds announced to actually getting them exceed 2 weeks.

I know there was a risk going in this G.B. as if we could make a killing with Avalon chips prior to the heavy hitters coming online. We obviously lost due to Avalon delays, steamboat made the best out of it he could so far since he went far above and beyond with getting all aspects of the production/parts/assembly/hosting/manpower ready before the chips arrived.  He created real miners with Avalon chips as promised.  Heavily involved with the Klondike project.  All of that I believe deserves some real respect/kudos.  I totally respect him for this.

However I am stumped as refunds for assembly seem to beyond his current scope?


as i stated before, that update was made just to throw us a bone to shut up, while he is mining with the hardware we paid.
he will make refunds of course, wait just a little more so he can refund us all from 1 BTC  Wink
