What is Merit ?

Merit is the mirror of your knowledge about Crypto world. Post or share some Good Content, achieve trust from other valuable member. We most of the people want to be celebrity but they never search that they have any kind of telnet or not. We most of us loves to live in dream, because dream's make his path depend on our demand, actually what you thought all day long. So don't make a palace in your dream , Just make a hootch in real life. Find real you and write your invention, thought, idea and share you dream to all. If people like your idea, if you touch there feelings they will give you reward, or justify or give some honor of your dream that's called Merit.

Rank is not power of member, its indicate how long he is belongs to this site. If anyone stay with this site one day he will be a boss of crypto Knowledge.
Rank represent depth of know about Crypto Market all though Crypto World.

I like Merit system. I don't know will I rank up or not, But I am pretty sure I will get some knowledge from here.

In my opinion.
Some merit sources are afk, they have a life and they don't have time to be a source.
On last 3 weels we had 4 new sources this boosted up the graph on last 2 weeks.
That's the point!
Theymos should expand the list of merit sources, and reduce automatically allocated points for each.
This approach might help merit circulations in the forum become more actively.

It is obviously that inclusive criteria for choosing good merit sources is very important factor to contribute building successfulness of merit system.

I already don't like the way clicking on +merit takes you away from the thread.  Can you please have it open in a new window?
Agree 100% with this.  A new window, or maybe just code in a little box next to the post where you can type the Merit you want to give and then hit Give or something.

We're working with cutting edge technology and the best we can do for this is a new tab for giving merit? How about a pop-up box, or like Kiritsugu said, if you click on "+ Merit", have a box slide open with the options. We really do not need a new tab just to give merit.

Also it also would be nice if "Report to Moderator" did not take you away from the thread. Lots of spam that needs to be reported these days.

No. No. No.  You're telling people who have no interest in the forum to post in a section that's dedicated to talking about forum issues.  The only thing that's going to achieve is a lower signal:noise.  It's already the case that more merit-seeking noobs have invaded Meta, and 99.9% of them are just trying to agree with the positions they think will earn them merit.  Senior members know this and generally don't give out merits in Meta.  So please don't suggest that desperate merit seekers post more in Meta.  That will most likely get them on the ignore lists of members who could possibly give them merit.
Yep people should post whatever is closest to their heart or knowledge.   Ideally we have a wide distribution of merit available across the forum and somebody even if they dont have alot will chip in a merit for a good post on that particular subject.   Meta is just the mechanics of the forum and discussions of repercussions, I most commonly post on the speculation board part of the forum.   Put up some news, a price projection, a graph and its actually informing me then I'm pretty grateful for that especially if its a newer rank member I'll add merit.

In addition to activity, everyone now has a merit score, and you need both a certain activity level and a certain merit score in order to reach higher member ranks. The required scores are:

RankRequired activityRequired merit
Brand new00
Newbie10
Jr Member300
Member6010
Full Member120100
Sr. Member240250
Hero Member480500
LegendaryRandom in the range 775-10301000

You get merit points when someone sends you some for one of your posts. Additionally, when someone sends you merit points, half of those points can be sent by you to other people.

Certain users are designated as "merit sources". They can create new merit out of nothing, up to a limited number per month (which differs per source). I will not be posting a definitive list of merit sources (so that people don't bug them too much), though you'll soon figure out who they are if you pay attention.

There is currently no such thing as a "demerit". I'm hoping that the positive merits alone will be fine. I could add demerits pretty easily later on if necessary, though.

I'm hoping that this system will increase post quality by:
 - Forcing people to post high-quality stuff in order to rank up. If you just post garbage, you will never get even 1 merit point, and you will therefore never be able to put links in your signature, etc.
 - Highlighting good posts with the "Merited by" line.

While we will not be directly moderating this, I encourage people to give merit to posts that are objectively high-quality, not just posts that you agree with.

Do not beg for merit excessively.

Useful infographics

Forum users have helpfully created some infographics to explain the merit system:
paxmao's infographic
ibminer's infographic
8Habits's infographic
JetSet11's infographic
zentdex's infographic
alia_armelle's infographic

If you want to be a merit source:

 1. Be a somewhat established member.
 2. Collect TEN posts written in the last couple of months by other people that have not received nearly enough merit for how good they are, and post quotes for them all in a new Meta thread. The point of this is to demonstrate your ability to give out merit usefully.
 3. We will take a look at your history and maybe make you a source.

I am especially eager to have merit sources in sub-communities such as the local sections.

Trivia:

For current members, your initial merit score is equal to the minimum required to your rank. Of that, a certain amount (less than the usual half) is spendable. The spendable amount was calculated based on your current rank and the number of activity points you earned in the last year. A Legendary member who hasn't posted in the last year would still be Legendary, but would not have any spendable merit.

If someone sends you 1 merit, the 0.5 sMerit is not wasted; it is just not shown until you get another merit point.

There are stats here, and you can find someone's merit summary by clicking the "merit" link on their profile.

Thank you Theymos! This is really helpful. Now I know how the bitcointalk System works. We have to contribute helpful data in-order to attract people who can give merits, merit us. I have been wondering why I got stuck in Jr. Member like forever until I found the answer.

I want to ask, time to update merit is how many days?

If you are talking about merit sources, then it's 30 days. If I award 20 sMerits today, then I get them back in 30 days. If I can't find any decent posts, because it takes too long to weed through all the rubbish, and I don't award any merit, then the replacement is delayed, and the good members lose out. The spam bots and TwitBook spammers don't seem to realise that they are actually slowing down the generation of new sMerits that could be awarded to the decent responsible members here.

Looking at your past posts, https://bitcointalksearch.org/user/lang-shao-2179076 I am forced to say that you should try harder.
You don't even have to look at his posts, just the amount of merits he's earned, which is ZERO.

Try to be more active in meta section (and answering questions asked by other members) .

I want to ask, time to update merit is how many days?

There is no time intervals. It is based on your quality content and the perception of quality of the other users.
Quick look through your post history and..

And also if you fall in one’s favor who’s a Merit source. For most people it’s pointless to strive for something higher than Full Member. Those days are over and you had to get in early. Which is fair of course! And now you see people really putting effort in some posts where they normally would have said much less words and put in way less effort. Those who are now Hero Members/Legendaries had it so much easier.. So, positive changes, right?

I really liked your picture and I’m not good with drawings so just used an existing one which may not be totally appropriate, but some people must feel this way in here Smiley

There's this: [TOP-200] The most generous users giving merits.
But why would you even want to know who they are? Theymos doesn't disclose the list to prevent merit begging, and if you do beg them, be warned that some Merit sources give you red trust for begging. And some are DT-members.
Another side effect of merit begging is being added to Ignore List of merit sources.
Some of merit sources are really strict, and readily to put merit beggars to their Ignore List, such as @Jet Cash.
Wow this is the worst case that you do not want to find yourself in, but you know what be yourself post naturally don't force things and hopefully some merit will come your way  Wink
