sorry to be off topic about rx480, if any from you guys have experience with r9 290 4go (the best deal I am able to find locally at the moment) , I would be glad to get some advice :

- best(s) pool to start with a 6 gpus rig ? nanopool , ethpool , ethermine , dwarfpool ?
- any advice about settings ? overclock ? undervolt ? any interesting commands in the .bat ?

Flash them with a TheStilt bios is THE most important thing you can do to a R9 290.
Then you should be able to run them around 1100/1250 and get right about 30MH/s without overheating.
Power consumption ballpark 280-300 watts with the highest-voltage TheStilt bios option.

Very interesting point. Could you explain a little more because I'm not sure to translate correctly : we should put the highest voltage available in the bios option to run them 1100/1250 but power consumption rise to 300w per card ?? (1800w per 6 GPU)

to be honest i prefer the old 6 rig setup with asrock h81 pro btc

with $500 you have a rig of six gpu

with the next gen gpu that consume less the perfect setup would be this for six gpu

asrock h81 pro btc
g.skill 8GB
G1840(you may buy a pentium here for only $10 more, it may be worth it for the extra cache ram)
ssd 64GB(120GB i've found one sandisk for only 40 euro on amazon)
evga 1k g2

total is 450 euro + 50 for riser you have your rig for only 500, then you just add your gpu

1kw is enough for future gpu because polaris and pascal will consume something like 120w per card, for gpu like 490 or 1070

Personally $500 is too much to build a basic rig.  I like using older LGA 775 hardware and I can build a PVC rig for about $100 (minus PSU) so that roi can be reached much faster.  It can be hard to find the proper mobo but when you do buy few of them. My logic is mining is a short term operation and roi needs to be reached asap.  Its stressful watching difficulty rise and profit reduce when you have hardware on credit.  After you have a steady income stream then it become easier to justify newer equipment

it's the psu that cost a lot, that build that i posted cost only 250 then you add 200 for the psu and 50 for riser, which you are obligated to buy, so it's very cheap in the end

buying parts that are too old can lead to compatibility issue, also no motherboard is as good as the h81 pro btc for mining with six gpu

The ASROCK H97 aniversary is also very good for 6gpus

I've been using qtminer/ethermine all along as I could not get on github to try anything BUT qtminer - that looks like it might have changed with my move and new ISP though.

I have inherited a 290 and 290x, can the Stilt BIOS apply to 290X too?

I havent got around to play with it because its was part of a gaming machine, and too busy with other rigs.

If I can get them to do 30MHs above, perhaps its worth putting them in a rig.

Intermix 290 and 290x in a single rig possible for maximum hash?

here is the drivers you need
http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/AMD-Radeon-Software-Crimson-Edition-16.6.2-Release-Notes.aspx

Crimson 16.6.2 is the best for R9 290 ? for stock use of with a thestilt bios ?
I currently have 15.12.

970 was listed as a 180 tdp also, but we can mine with it at 160w, so the same will apply for the 1070, with the right power limit it can be lwoered to 120w

1kw is more than enough for future gpu, unless you want to buy high end gpu which won't scale right...

I inherited a Sapphire NITRO R7 370 4GB and ASUS STRIX R7 370 from 2 old gaming system.
Any idea if this would be good GPUs for ETH? I browsed around and both these cards can do 15-16MHs per card.
Can overclock to get more hash?

Those cards probably won't do 16MH currentlly, but they should do better than the 9ish MH I'm getting out of my Powercolor 7850 (same shader count, but your cards have a lot better memory setup). I'd guess you can get them to more like 11-13 range currently (7870s are supposedly 15-16MH cards too, but mine have never seen more than 12 despite a lot of time spent on fine-tuning the clocks and such).
I suspect the 16MH reported is figures from when the DAG was a lot smaller.
Your 370s SHOULD use less power than my 7850 does too, so should be more profitable overall.

GTX 1070 is listed at 150 watts TDP, not 120. I'd go with the EVGA G2-1300 or Seasonic X1250 (or plat versions if you prefer) to power 6 of those, NOT a 1000-watt PS.

Scrypt mining with GPUS is "FORGET IT YOU LOSE MONEY" for over 2 years now.

Last word I saw on Polaris was NOT "next month" but "Q3 2016" for the first card(s) and will be low-to-midrange card(s)".
It's the GTX 1070 that's showing up on June 10.

RX480 Sapphire testing so far:

No luck on Win8.1 so I have to start off Windows 7 fresh.

Right out of box, using CDM v4.7, one GPU running at 24.7MHs stock clocks.

Totals amps 1.2 and 242 watts on EVGA-G2-1300

I am using ASrock H81 Pro BTC board, Celeron 1840, 8GB RAM, 120 SSD, powered molex and PCI-USB3 risers.

Sleepy now, so will continue running 6 x GPUs tomorrow morning.

Gotto find the OC Utility from Sapphire website.... zzz zzz zzz

I like the H81 Pro BTC. I also have the H61 Pro BTC. They are both very reliable. But one is for 1150, the other is for 1155 socket.

Use Dwarfpool. I'm very satisfied of them. I've always ran my cards "out of the box", without any undervolt nor overclock, so unfortunately, I can't help you on that point.

IMHO,
if you have more than 1 GHs, mine at ethpool
if you have 150-180MHs, ethermine
I was dwarfpool, suprnova, f2pool before....

nanopool , ethpool , ethermine are all good pools. If you just have less 1GH, use the ethermine.

It is better to undervolt .

'The right to privacy matters'
I now have 5 pc's in house with 9 gpus one more coming today.

Phil,

First of all - thank you for extremely helpful information of mining PCs, power consumption etc

I have a question: I have some money (around 2BTC) from Hashnest cloud mining and I would like to build an open stand for scrypt mining (ETH at the moment)

Could you please recommend me a simple set of MB, memory, CPU, SSD for building a setup I can play with? I do have 850W a power supply (good one) and plan to buy two R9 390 GPUs.

I will buy the stuff on Amazon (premium + 5% discount + some GCs).

Thank you!

well I run all windows 7   and skylake is a bit of fuck you  windows 7 is old.

so I am  using gigabyte b75m

http://www.amazon.com/Gigabyte-Intel-Micro-Motherboards-GA-B75M-D3H/dp/B007R9CRGW

but I buy it here

http://www.provantage.com/gigabyte-technology-ga-b75m-d3h~7GIGB0HU.htm

and they sell out fast because they are very reliable.

they are new gear.

I would put this cpu in it.http://www.ebay.com/itm/INTEL-CORE-I5-3570-QUAD-CORE-3-40-GHZ-PROCESSOR-SR0T7-25078-/262446795992?

it is used but good seller.

I would use 2 sticks of this ram

http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-HyperX-FURY-2x4GB-1600MHz/dp/B00J8E92X0/ref=sr_1_3?

this heatsink

http://www.amazon.com/SilverStone-Technology-Nitrogen-Profile-RL-NT09-115X/dp/B01BVC8IVS?

you need a cd/dvd rom to load windows 7

these cards are okay

http://www.amazon.com/PowerColor-Video-AXR9-390-8GBD5-PPDHE/dp/B00ZUWD8LQ/ref=sr_1_1?

ssd 42

http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Plus-120GB-2-5-Inch-SDSSDA-120G-G25/dp/B00S9Q9UKS/ref=sr_1_5?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1463779975&sr=1-5&keywords=120gb+ssd
so mobo 80
     cpu 112
     ram  30
heatsink 18
cards     640
cheap ssd 42

so 920 plus windows 7 and a dvd player.

windows 7 and a dvd player well that depends
