I now have 5 pc's in house with 9 gpus one more coming today.

Phil,

First of all - thank you for extremely helpful information of mining PCs, power consumption etc

I have a question: I have some money (around 2BTC) from Hashnest cloud mining and I would like to build an open stand for scrypt mining (ETH at the moment)

Could you please recommend me a simple set of MB, memory, CPU, SSD for building a setup I can play with? I do have 850W a power supply (good one) and plan to buy two R9 390 GPUs.

I will buy the stuff on Amazon (premium + 5% discount + some GCs).

Thank you!

Rowland Heights, CA is where the majority of their products ship from.

@ Amph

The gtx 1070 looks to be the best and most efficient at this point.  You can run it at 100 watts or crank it up to 37 mh and it uses what like 160 watts, seems like amd has lost its crown.

'The right to privacy matters'

my two are due on tues.

I have cancelled my order at bhphoto.

and kept my order at newegg

so 2 on the way.

Just curious which warehouse did Newegg ship yours out of.  I'm wondering if they got these cards out to all their warehouses before they went on sale or if they're all shipping out of California.

Mine are from Cali.

I now have 5 pc's in house with 9 gpus one more coming today.

I am going to the brooklyn navy yard.  I built a few pc's for my friend's work shop.  I am going to build a 2 card rig for him 8 cent power.  I will put my hd7970 and my r9 380 in it.

we will spilt the coins should be fun.

there was a bad typo in my post, polaris is coming next month not next week, still if you can buy 370 used for $100 each or 120 max and build your rig, then sell those for $100 later or $80 at worst, and buy polaris, i think it would be a good move

no need to sell the other part, i believe there is still plenty of profit in crypto and always will be, sell only your gpu

yes, agree - the power savings (due 14nm) on these Polaris is very good from what I read - it's worth investing if not to expensive.

I did get these 4GB 370 cards for cheaps so I may keep them and put them in my test machines to test mine other algos.

are those new cards really a better deal than $130-150 refurbished AMDs R9 290 ?

and is the answer different for guys with cheap electricity ?

if you have 4 to 7 cent power the older cards are fine

Refurb R9 290 are $190 at newegg.

If the power cost is cheap enough then the refurbs are a better value as you pay $60 less and that will buy you quite a bit of time mining.  For me I have kind of a average power price (.12 kw) and it would take at least 6 months mining for the 480 to save that $60.

@ 27 MH we are looking at something like this

290 = 220-250 watts

390 = 170 watts

480 = 155 watts

The big kicker is you could be mining on 390's and hit roi or be close to it already and only consume about 15 watts more.  The 480 is kind of a let down at this point as we were hoping to see 100 watts @ 25 MH.

you have 100w with 27mh it's called 1070 or 23.5 with 80w it's called nano, yes they are more expensive, but for expensive electricity they are the best

I inherited a Sapphire NITRO R7 370 4GB and ASUS STRIX R7 370 from 2 old gaming system.
Any idea if this would be good GPUs for ETH? I browsed around and both these cards can do 15-16MHs per card.
Can overclock to get more hash?

yes the 370 nitro is basically the best card for the buck you can get, very cheap if you get it used, you can build a whole rig for $1300-1400 that can do 90-100MH

but since polaris is coming next week and will consume much less, i would wait at this point, selling again everything in a month it's a pain in the ass

Thanks Amph, mandica for your comments - I was lucky to spot the cards before they sell it off to the junkyard man. Too bad there were only 2 box that has them.

I plan to underclock mV and overclock it a bit and experiment how much juice can I squeeze off them.

The Polaris looks tempting, but I purchased a few Nano's recently and anything beyond that needs me to raise extra funds. With the ETH price now strong at $14+ I may invest in a few.

I have taken Philip's approach to do a 2 x GPU system so that I can offload these systems easily in future as gaming machines.

The 4GB card is good. The hash rate will not drop as much as the 3GB cards such as the 7950 or 280x.

i guess for people with very cheap energy AND cool ambient, maybe not, but not everyone is sitting on $0.05 electricity in iceland, so it may be worth it

I got my Sapphire 480 this morning.

After attempting to get the 480 to work on Win 8.1 -- I am still not able to get to test it because the Crimson 16.6.2 refuse to work on Window 8.1....  Huh

I don't know what is the reason Win 8.1 was omitted in the download page. There are links for W7 and W10, and Linux.

the windows 7 drivers should work on 8.1
if it complains put them in windows 7 compatibility mode.

No can do - got an error "OS not supported"

I will downgrade to Win7 but I dont know if 6xGPU hack will work on Win7.

I want to get this 480 into a 6 GPU config under 1000w and under 5amps.

Any one knows why W8.1 was omitted in the RX480 supported drivers?

I understand that underclocking the memory has no impact to overall voltage reduction, that's why I kept it at 1500mhz stock.

The power usage is linearly related to the frequency, so if you reduce the memory frequency, the power consumption will reduce.

Yeah it saves a few watts per  card if you drop memory down.

Eth coin is rising strong now.

 Some cards though are picky about the memory speed setting if you want max or near-max hashrate.
