ABSOlutely. If you can imagine friends out in the wild that want to get each other back for an evening out or whatever, maybe they can do it through their mobiles. My grandma has a smart phone and no computer... look at the demographics. If we assume that the more people that use and accept NEM the better, then we need to acknowledge the increasing demographic of mobile devices. Especially given mobile means on the move means spending money. Add in the "bump" feature of things like Android where I can just transfer you money with a bump and a swipe or something and the "tokens" gain value as a symbol of exchange, even if not directly tied to fiat. Meaning, folks might use them as "wooden nickels" to keep tabs of who got dinner last or whatever. That they could even be used in this fashion would give them value and support the network.

The bottom line is for a currency to actually be valuable it must be incredibly liquid. It must be highly accepted and easily exchanged so anything we do to that end whether its JSON/REST mobile APIs or QR codes the easier the better. This can't be understated. Even if it could be used as virtual currency (think Linden Dollars or money for an auction house in a game), it would gain value. These things are all easy to do if we properly create APIs for the targeted technology, and if we do a good job with grassroots adoption (maybe even viral in a game). Included in this is definitely gamification or similar.

Slandering won't matter once people see the coin in action during alpha testing. People are only slandering now because there is no actual product to see so it's easy game, but once we see a release and people begin using NEM, trolling will be a lot harder to do. For now, all we can do is ignore them until the alpha and then hope everything goes smoothly with the alpha launch to avoid any more significant PR damage. I do recommend pushing back the alpha date IF the software is not truly ready to be used yet, because with the recent "bad press" the last thing we need is an extremely buggy public alpha as fodder for the trolls.

Delays are much better than having a bad first impression, in my opinion -- well, as long as the developers keep us regularly updated anyway.

Our original thread got locked because the creator left NEM. We created an unmoderated thread that was besieged by trolls, and then we created this moderated one. NEM trolls created at least 5 threads slandering NEM.

Suggestion: I suppose the moderated thread is what NEM will want to show for the greater public. Therefore I suggest taking out from the unmoderated thread the full OP, just leave the title (maybe add "non-moderated" or something), logo, and link to the OP of this moderated thread to make clear difference which one is the bitcointalk official. Also you would have to update only one OP, more simple.

Whenever someone complains about the thread being moderated simply answer with a link to the other thread. But this should be THE thread imo.

In his words he said he had "a few" sockpuppet accounts, another source said he had 60, though I never saw any sort of justification for that number. So probably somewhere between 3 and 60. Some of the inside crew could probably shed some light on the subject.
