I didn't said that population is the only criteria. But it is one of the factors that need to be considered. Look at the difference between England and New Zealand. The former has a population that is 12 times that of New Zealand. As a result, there are more cricket players at club, first-class and international level. So the player pool is much bigger. The problem with New Zealand is that they have such a small player pool, and in case any of their players get injured, then it gets really difficult to replace them.

Cricket is national sports of England, in fact cricket originated from England yet they have to wait till 12th ODI world cup (2019) to claim there first ODI title. England despite having so much good cricket infrastructure have ups and downs in there performance. In 1996, 1999 and 2003 ODI world cup they were just an average team. But this is reality that England is very strong team at the moment in all three formats due to presence of players like Ben Stokes.
New Zealand despite having small population is runner up in two ODI world cups. They are as good as any other team in the world, they just need to perform well on big days.

Sri Lanka have been unable to maintain their dominance against New Zealand, as they lost the first match badly and they also lost the second match badly. Sri Lanka's ODI series against New Zealand has not been good, except for the second ODI, where they lost by a huge margin of 113 runs. There is no improvement in the batting and bowling of Sri Lanka, due to which they are not able to play a thrilling match with their opponent. The bowling performance and batting performance of New Zealand was very good, but nothing was right from Sri Lanka. Since Sri Lanka lost both the two ODI matches, they lost the series, as the next match is very important for them, so Sri Lanka must improve their game to win the third match. If Sri Lanka wants to maintain their dominance, then the third match against New Zealand must be the one, otherwise they will be whitewashed in the ODI series.
Sri Lanka are losing every match against New Zealand so how will they dominate against New Zealand.. Sri Lanka only won two warm-up matches and one T20 match against New Zealand, After that, they were unable to win a single match against New Zealand. Earlier when Sri Lanka lost the first match and the second match of the T20 series against New Zealand we thought that maybe they will be whitewashed in the T20 series but they won the third match, As a result, they were not whitewashed in that series. We are seeing similar performance from them in ODI series also i.e. they lost in first ODI and also lost in second ODI so maybe they will be able to win in third ODI against New Zealand.
Sri Lanka were bowled out for just 177 runs in the first ODI due to their poor batting. Maybe I thought that in the second ODI match, the batsmen of the Sri Lankan team would bat responsibly. But again, the Sri Lankan batsmen could not bat responsibly. In the second ODI match, the Sri Lankan batsmen could not bat responsibly and the Sri Lankan team was bowled out for only 142 runs, which is very embarrassing for the Sri Lankan team. The way Sri Lankan team is performing in the ODI match is really disappointing if their performance continues like this then there is a high possibility of a whitewash in the ODI match. But as cricket is a game of uncertainty if the Sri Lankan batsmen can bat responsibly in the third ODI match then maybe the third ODI match  Sri Lankan team can win.

Last match could be more exciting because Sri Lankan International cricket team have lost first 2 matches and players of that team are furious because they want to win next match . They lost badly in last match because that team was all out by making only 142 runs. New Zealand International cricket team won the match by 113 runs . O'Rourke did excellent bowling in this match and he got 3 wickets in this match and he gave only 31 runs in this match and Duffy also took 2 wickets in this match and he was a wicket taker bowler in this match.New Zealand International cricket team did gave incredible target but  Sri Lankan team batting was very poor in this match and that was the reason of success of  New Zealand team.

I like to treat everyone as a friend 🔹
New Zealand keep dominance Sri Lanka and once again they proved their legacy over their opponent in the 2nd ODI match where  New Zealand won by 113 runs and thus they won the ODI series cause they already have a victory in first ODI. In both matches, Sri Lanka did a very poor performance in batting and bowling both. Match reduced to 37 overs due to rain and within those overs, NZ Scored 255-9 runs where Mark Chapman(62) and opener Rachin Ravindra(79) did a decent amount of runs with having a beautiful half century. Maheesh Theekshana took 4 wickets behalf of SA. But while it comes to SA batting, they did poor startup where they lost four wickets at 22-4 runs only. Kamindu Mendis(64) able to scored decent amount of runs, with his all effort he able to made half century but rest of players lost wickets with lower runs. It isn't possible for one player like Kamindu Mendis to make the team win until all players give their best effort and perform good. And once again SL lost the match.

If the rain didn't stop, Sri Lanka would have been lucky, but the rain stopped and Sri Lanka lost by a huge margin of 113 runs, which makes a very bad record for them.

Well if the rain didn't stop then it would have been unfair with the New Zealand team and they would be feeling unlucky. How well they batted, shows that they are totally composed and committed to their game. Making 255 runs in 37 overs is joke. One can say that they lost 9 wickets but still they knew that the weather is not good so they didn't let any balls wasted.

Now the final ODI will be played on Saturday. Can Sri Lanka win one match like they did in the T20 ? With their current form, NZ will go as favorite in this match. I hope they do not relax thinking that they have already won the series.

Second match of ODI series between New Zealand vs Sri Lanka which played at Hamilton and reduced to 37 overs due to rain having easy win for the Black Caps after winning toss Sri Lanka decided to bowl first but New Zealand starting with aggressive approach which helps them for having good target on board through Rachin Ravindra 79 from 63 balls and Mark Chapman 62 from 52 were main architected of their inning we have hat-trick for the Sri Lankan Maheesh Theekshana who ended 4 for 44 from his 8 overs.

In reply, we have Sri Lankan top order again collapsed and fail to keep things on level which give them huge problems in past as well even we have good resistance from Kamindu Mendis 64 from 66 but still they ended through huge deficit and lost match by 113 runs we have Rachin Ravindra as player of the match.
If the rain didn't stop, Sri Lanka would have been lucky, but the rain stopped and Sri Lanka lost by a huge margin of 113 runs, which makes a very bad record for them.  New Zealand is still strong due to which their bowling was successful and they won the match by dismissing the entire team in 30 overs.  Although their bowler also stopped the runs enough due to which Sri Lanka could not score so many runs.  The New Zealand batsmen set a huge target of 255 in 37 overs, which is made in 50 overs.  Which proves that New Zealand is a very strong and pressing team, so Sri Lanka will not be able to control them and will lose the match.  The way Sri Lanka are playing this series, they have lost this series and are compounding their poor performance which spells disaster for the upcoming matches.

Pre Quarter Finals underway at the Vijay Hazare Trophy. In the first one, it looks like Rajasthan has the upper hand. Tamil Nadu need another 70 runs to win, with 4 wickets and 12 overs in hand. In the second one, Haryana seems to be having the advantage. Chasing a target of 299, Bangal seems to be struggling at 189/5. Abhimanyu Easwaran, who returned to India without making his debut in Australia, got out for just 10 runs. Karan Lal and Kaushik Maity are at the crease now.

Yes, they may not, but if they do, it'll much surreal game. Two rival teams facing each other at grandest stage, that would be peak experience.

Yes that will be a big match, but there is a big IF that happens. The Pakistan team is not been in good form and it is very unlikely they will reach the semi final stages of ICC tournaments. Yes, if there is an Asia Cup or other other tournaments where only Asian teams are involved, then ICC can take this risk of keeping both in different groups and hoping to reach both of them to the semis.

Way you have to put cash cow in quotes makes me feel like — you think ICC does IND vs PAK in group stage as public service than for their pockets.

People want to see India Pakistan match and ICC serves this wish for the audience by always having one match between the two. They can claim they are doing them on public wish but in fact they are just making money out of it. Smiley
Pakistan team is not in form and they can come back to form ‍any time as it is unpredictable team. I think the current squad is quite good. Especially for the squad they played against South Africa.  If ICC earns more revenue from India and Pakistan match, there is no problem because the ordinary people will enjoy it. If such a match is organized, both the parties can benefit. ICC will not do anything where there is no money but still everyone in the cricket community expects such a match. If such a match is organized, the common people will spend money to watch these matches.

I was checking out champions trophy schedule and we have India vs Pakistan in group stage once again. I would like it more if they put India and Pakistan in different groups and then they collide in semis or in finals. It would make match much more interesting than this cash cow treatment from ICC.
There is no guarantee that Pakistan will move to finals or even in the semi finals. They may not even qualify for the knockout stage. Then ?

Well, we won't have IND vs PAK then but I am all in for it because it'll keep rivalary interesting. Currently, these two teams face each other directly in each ICC tournament, and it has kind of become meh.

Let's suppose even if both India and Pakistan go into the semi finals but they still do not play against each other. It's even more unlikely that they both will win the semi's and proceed to the dream final for ICC.

If population is criteria then countries like Pakistan, India and Bangladesh will be winner in every sporting event they compete. There performance in Olympics is miserable, in recent summer Olympics these three countries were able to win only one gold medal while Uzbekistan with population of only 36 million was able to grab 8 gold medals. A country can excel in sports and other departments of life only if there is proper planning and decisions are made on merit not on nepotism.
New Zealand with population of 5 million is doing good only because of facts you highlighted. If they follow pattern of sub-continent then due to there small population they might down to level of an associate team.

There is nothing to be disappointed about, most of the teams perform poorly on foreign pitches. Even then, it must be admitted that Sri Lanka, as an experienced team, did worse than expected. It is a real shame for the Sri Lankan team that the Sri Lankan team lost the match by a big margin against New Zealand. In my opinion, the Sri Lankan team players should have played with a lot of awareness. If the Sri Lankan team players could have played a conscious game, then maybe the Sri Lankan team would not have been defeated by such a margin.

New Zealand has been performing very well in this ODI season, winning two consecutive matches which shows that the New Zealand team is stronger. These two matches have been won by the largest margin, but most of the time the New Zealand team has been aggressive. There are enough reasons why Sri Lanka lost this match, only one of the top batsmen of Sri Lanka, Kamindi Mendis, has performed well but the rest of the players have scored very poor runs.
However, the bowling has not been able to create pressure, and the pitch condition is deplorable due to rain, which has made the Sri Lanka team batting panicky.

Sri Lanka's batsmen could not make any advantage in the ODI series. Sri Lanka gave a target of only 179 runs in the first match. Do you really think that a small country of 5 million can effectively compete against countries such as India (1.45 billion) and Pakistan (250 million)? The player pool is very small to start with. But the advantage for New Zealand is that they have a very effective schools and universities cricket setup. And also, their first-class setup is one of the best for any country, and can compete with the county cricket of England and Sheffied Shield of Australia. On top of that, they receive a steady stream of cricket players from South Africa, England and India.

India vs Pakistan match is always a high voltage match in cricket. There is no guarantee that both teams will qualify for the semi-finals, even the chance of playing against each other will depend on the point table position of group stage. ICC wants a sure match between India and Pakistan in all big events. That's why they have put them in the same group. A match between India and Pakistan is like a money machine for ICC.
