Lasith Malinga was probably the last Sri Lankan player who could be classified as "legendary". After him, Sri Lanka was relegated to the category of teams such as Ireland and Zimbabwe. It is clear that the domestic cricket is not producing enough number of quality youngsters. The cricket board needs to look in to this issue and revamp the domestic setup. Else, in the long term they may end up like Kenya. Also, I don't have a good opinion about the SLCB. There is too much governmental interference on the board.
I have no idea about the involvement of a government in their respective boards and i do not think the ICC will appreciate that and that was evident in Zimbabwe when the government was controlling the board the ICC was forced to impose restrictions on them. Ireland and Sri Lanka do have issues in finding new talents and so does some of the countries who are not having a good domestic set up.

Sri Lanka was a world-class team when players like Sangakara, Jaywardhane, Dilshan, and Malinga were in the Sri Lankan squad. They were able to defeat any strong team. Sri Lankan cricket is in such dire straits now that these players have retired together. The Sri Lanka Cricket Board could not find their replacement. There are no experienced players in the squad now. I think if this squad plays with Afghanistan, Sri Lanka will also lose.
The Sri Lanka broad is at fault as they did not find any replacement for these legendary players and they all retired at once and they did not groom the young talents and that is the reason they are struggling and Angelo Mathews is the only player who is still in the team and i feel that he under achieved because he was a talented all rounder but he never fulfilled that because of the constant injury.
Srilanka is a team that can be seen on the top list. Now things have gone entirely different. Losing to Bangladesh means, the Bangladesh team have consistently improved their performance. Now Sri Lanka is getting into a situation same as Zimbabwe experienced in the past. The team is with good strength, but that didn't last long. Now drastic change needs to be done to rebuild the team.

They are ranked below Bangladesh in ODI ranking and below  Afganistan in T20. This was the same team that has won ODI worldcup. There are so many legendary players in Srilankan cricket and now you won't find a single player playing the IPL. Such a decline can only happen if the board is corrupt and incompetent.

They won the ODI World Cup 25 years ago.. many of the players from that squad are in their 50s and 60s now. Perhaps the squad of 1996 was the best that Sri Lanka ever produced, as it had their best players. To name a few, Muttiah Muralitharan, Chaminda Vaas, Sanath Jayasuriya, Romesh Kaluwitharana, Aravinda de Silva, Arjuna Ranatunga and Roshan Mahanama were present in that squad. These players retired after a few years and the downward spiral of Lankan cricket started almost immediately after that.

When Jayasuriya was captaining the Sri Lankan team, Bangladesh was an associate nation and they didn't had the test status. Perhaps he is still stuck in that time. It may be hard for him to admit that now Bangladesh has leaped past Sri Lanka and the latter is on the downward slide ever since players such as Malinga and Sangakkara retired from international cricket. Rather than blaming the players, she should rather give suggestions to improve their performance.
They need to find young talents rather than giving them tips and suggestion to improve performances, they always lacked talents bowlers and after the retirement of Muttiah Muralitharan who was their work horse in every format of the game and now the retirement of Lasith Malinga they were not able to find a bowler of those caliber who could change the match anytime and they seriously lack batsman who could perform consistently.

Bangladesh improved their performance throughout the years while Sri Lanka failed in finding young talents to replace their retiring players and now they are struggling to be even competitive.

Don't know what was Jayasuriya was thinking. Golden days are over for the Lankans, not expecting anything extra ordinary in next 3-4 years except couple of blinders here n there.

^^^ We are still in the initial stages of the ODI Super League. Each team will be playing a total of 36 ODI matches (3 each against other teams) and right now Sri Lanka has played only 5 matches. More than 80% of their matches are remaining, including those against weak teams such as Netherlands, Ireland and Zimbabwe. But they need to be careful from now onwards, because teams such as Bangladesh are far ahead of them. Also, because of the CoVID 19 situation, there is a chance that at least some of these planned matches will be called off.

I should go through the original post however I was missed badly. Anyway, much appreciate for your pointing out. Bangladesh go up 2-0 and take the series against Sri Lanka, and secure the top position of the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League. Following CWC league table Sri Lanka on 12th position since Sri Lanka are continuing their downward slide. I'd be happy and proud if Sri Lanka can complete at top 5, even 6-7 would be great.

It will be too much to expect from a team which is currently at the 12th spot, to get promoted to the 5th. And from what I have heard, their next ODI series is against England and India (the latter one looks doubtful though), and getting enough wins from these series will be very tough. But fortunately this league stretches to 2023, and therefore Sri Lanka has probably enough time and matches in hand to secure their promotion to the top-8. Playing in the qualifying tournament can be quite humiliating.

@Sithara007 I doubt that Srilanka will qualify for the top 8 because in this series they have shown that they’re a weak team, and if they wish to change their fortunes then they must put in more efforts, and even try and give other player’s a chance. Furthermore do you really believe they can make it to the top 8, and is it a sentimental believe or you have some solid research to back your statements.

Quote

There we have it - Bangladesh have absolutely bossed this, and tamed a hapless Sri Lankan side here, to achieve their first bilateral ODI series win against them, such that they can play that "perfect game" in the third ODI with all the freedom in the world.

In Search of Incredible
This is the first ODI series win for Bangladesh against Sri Lanka. And Bangladeshi team have played perfectly in both match, hope they will also perform nicely in the last ODI match. Now the weather condition isn't good in Bangladesh. The weather forecast says that Cyclone Yaas may hit in Bangladesh on 26th May. Hopefully the weather won't be bad during the last ODI match on 28th May. Today the match had to stop several times because of rain and the game has ended with DLS method. Current Sri Lankan team isn't perfect enough, the players need to be more careful with their batting.

This is the original post and the posters were talking about the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League. They were not talking about the ICC ODI rankings, which anyway doesn't have any relevance. And they are right. Sri Lanka most probably will finish outside the top-8 and they may be require to play the qualifier tournament if they want to take part in the ICC ODI World Cup in 2023.

Sri Lanka really struggling at 91/5 after 26 overs. Unless there is a miracle, they will lose this match as well and that will leave them with a grand total of -2 in the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League (from 5 matches). Just one more ODI remains in this series and even if they win that one, they will end up with just 8 points (for comparison, Ireland is having 10 points right now). And given that their next ODI series is against England (and that too an away series), things really look tough for SL.

Amazing counter attack from Mushfiqur Rahim. Bangladesh made a total of 246, after being reduced to 184/7 at one point. Rahim added valuable runs with the lower order, with Mohammad Saifuddin giving plenty of support. The 8th wicket partnership added 48 runs and that might have saved the match for Bangladesh. But it needs to be seen whether the match can be completed, as the weather prediction is not looking good.
Bangladesh scored 247 runs, enough to win on this pitch. And it seems that Bangladesh will win easily. The Sri Lankans lost 4 valuable wickets for only 85 runs. And 23 overs are already over. Bangladesh will win this match too, but I am not satisfied with the batting of Bangladesh batsmen. There are very few batsmen to perform regularly in the Bangladesh team.
You are right, Bangladesh batsmen are not regular. Players like Liton Das are not able to help the team much, yet they are being given a chance to be in the squad. Despite not performing as expected by the Bangladeshi batsmen, the Bangladeshi bowlers are bowling well enough. Sri Lanka lost 5 wickets for 89 runs. I do not see any chance for Sri Lanka to win this match.

Bangladesh had finally made a good target. Now Sri Lanka is struggling same as the first ODI losing fast wickets. The required run rate isn't quite high, but fall of few more wickets within the next five overs will increase the winning chance of Bangladesh. With the current score of 86/4 at 23 overs completed, the winning percentage of Sri Lanka is just 20%
