Cheating is very common in age group cricket, especially in countries such as India and Pakistan. The BCCI issues terminations to dozens of players every year for wrongly stating their actual age. It is not very rare to find 22-23 year old players participating in U-19 tournaments. This actually steals the opportunity from deserving players who don't cheat. The birth records are stored electronically in western nations such as England and Australia, and there it is not possible to do such fraud.

AFAIK there is no mechanism to identify the age of a player other then his birth certificate (correct me if I am wrong). Now in Pakistan and India birth certificates are issued by govt authorities electronically, so you cant modify record unless some insider helps you in doing that.

We all know that Munaf Patel did this to play in the IPL. He said he's 29 when he was actually 35.

I dont know how an international player can say about his age. His age is publicly available on sites like espncricinfo and in ICC data. There is no way an international player can manipulate his age.

I sometimes doubt the age of these players playing the tournament. Some of them look more mature and over aged sometimes. It might be because they have been practicing and playing that their physical appearance can be deceiving. Basically in any tournament the team that has won previously cannot be considered as a favourite for the next tournament. Otherwise most of them would have won consecutively every time.

@Sithara007 I believe high ranking officials also helps player’s cheat, because it’s impossible for them to cheat without the officials help. Furthermore do teams get banned if a player is caught lying about his age, or only the player who lied gets banned by the ICC?.

Age fudging is nothing new. We all know that Munaf Patel did this to play in the IPL. He said he's 29 when he was actually 35. I am not actually clear about what the rules are about this matter. But I think the whole team shouldn't suffer just because of one selfish player who lied. And who knows maybe he even lied to his teammates and coaches too.

This is the thing with under-19 worlds cups because team completely changes in these tournaments as players cross their age mark or get selected in national team which brings in a fresh team yet again for all the teams so there is no guarantee that last time winner would be favorites in this world cup as well.

^ That's because the team which wins the world cup often does not contain the same squad till the next world cup and a lot of senior players seem to retire by that time. And there is the thing about players form, A player who played very well in the last world cup match, not play that good in the next one. And by the time the next world cup comes, a lot of chairs seem to age which obviously deteriorates their performance.

The Bangladesh Under-19s have played five ODIs against the Sri Lanka Under-19s. The matches were held in Sri Lanka. The funny thing is that Bangladesh has lost all the matches very badly. Bangladesh's Under-19 team was very strong. And the current Under-19 World Cup champion team is Bangladesh. Their poor performance is very disappointing. However, this is not the same squad that participated in the Under-19 World Cup. However, it is a shame to return to the country without winning any match.
I checked the results from the last match. Sri Lanka won by the tiniest of the margins (4 runs). So you can't really say that Bangladesh performed very poorly. Anyway it is tough to play in Sri Lankan pitches. Even big 3 teams had issues recently. I wouldn't' read too much in to this series. The U-19 world cup is only a few months away and I hope that both the teams will be able to perform well. This time the tournament will take place in West Indies and a total of 16 countries are taking part.

I am not expecting much from the Bangladesh team in the upcoming Under-19 World Cup. Since they are now the champion team, they should at least reach the semi-finals of the next World Cup. But looking at their performance, I don't think they will be able to reach the semi-finals. The team is weak now, mainly because most of the players who helped Bangladesh win the Under-19 World Cup now have a chance in the national team. We are now seeing new players in the under-19 team. Those I don't think are talented enough.

Ager group cricket can be very volatile. There may be some very talented players in one season, but they become ineligible to play when the tournament resumes after two years. If I am not wrong, India is the team that has won the U-19 world cup maximum number of times, followed by Australia. The 2018 World Cup was won by India, and they finished runners up in 2016 and 2020. Bangladesh won the trophy for the first time in 2020, so you can't say that there is no improvement. This time the competition is going to be tough anyway.

Pakistan Beat India and it is absolutely sad. Rohit was expecting a good length ball & was surprised by the full length. He was beaten more for length & pace than movement. Rahul too seemed to expecting a back of a good length. Almost like, the bowling coach/analyst told the openers that Shaheen Afridi to look for short of a good length

Bangladesh is good team in both formats like ODI and twenty/20, but sadly they have no consistency because of very poor domestic system. They fail to develop good platform for their own players have some serious issues with fielding and bowling even they have some good batsmen but sadly these two departments never works good for them in last match they drop 2 catches and this mistake change game completely. Hopefully in next few years they could be improved but this need some good funds and commitment from their management. After this world cup they have some busy schedule with helps them for having some good experience.

As long as they remain overdependent on Shakib al Hassan, they will be inconsistent. Luckily for them, now Mustafizur Rahman and Mushfiqur Rahim are also rising to the occasion. But yesterday's loss to Sri Lanka once again casts doubt on their future. This is the same Bangladeshi side which lost to Scotland. Now they have lost to Sri Lanka, despite setting up a mammoth total. Shakib and Mustafizur conceded just 39 runs from their 6 overs yesterday (don't know why they didn't bowled their full quota of overs). The other bowlers went for 133 runs from 12.5 overs (more than 10 runs per over).

^ And the 2 missed catches, man!! those hurt too much. If Liton held onto those catches it might have been different results. And I really think Shakib and Fizz should have bowled 8 together. And they should obviously work on their death bowling. They simply can't afford to leak runs like that if they want to win matches. And outfield work has to improve. Hope they learn from their mistakes and fix those for a better tournament.

I am not sure about this residence requirement of 4 years. From what I heard, the ICC reduced it to 6 months some time ago. If it had remained at 4 years, then none of the Omani players would qualify to represent that country. There was only one instance of a GCC nation fielding a team that was entirely comprised of citizens. When the Kuwaiti team participated in Asian Games, all the 11 members of the playing XI were Arabs (as per the rules of Asian Games, non-citizens can't represent a country). And here is the result:
https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/asian-games-men-s-cricket-competition-2014-15-777895/bangladesh-vs-kuwait-4th-quarter-final-778035/full-scorecard
There is no change of rules for anyone still ICC need 4 years living in country, and it's working all Omani players are living in this country for years, and now they are eligible for playing here in this Mega event. As for Asian Games they have their own rules and regulations which apply for them, just because of this, Kuwait have to send their own players for this event.
These rules are applied for many other sports associations as well because they feel much better with them.    https://www.usacricket.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/ICC_Player_Eligibility_Rules.pdf

^ In my opinion, Bangladesh has never been a really good t20 team. They have played good ODI in recent times but they have always lacked in both test and t20 format. They had magic in Sri Lanka and they lost the match by five wickets. It seems like only one or two players are performing on regular basis but the others are not performing as they should just like today Shakib al Hassan and Mohammad Naim and Mushfiqur Rahim Played really well in my opinion. Shakib with the ball and Naim and Mushfiqur in batting. But we know cricket is a team game so one or two or three players performing might just not cut it and that's what happened here I think Bangladesh has to figure out what is going wrong and work on it. Because I think Bangladesh needs to work harder and work in the bowling department. Except for Shakib al Hassan, the bowling was not up to the mark and that is a big reason for the loss of Bangladesh.

^^^ OK.. here is how the eligibility criteria in cricket compares to that of other sports.

Among the major sports, only baseball has a relaxed system similar to cricket (which is understandable given the fact that baseball is mostly limited to the United States). Foorball, Basketball and Ice Hockey doesn't allow foreigners to be included in the playing XI.

It is true that the players in GCC teams are not even having citizenship status and all you need is to live in the country for 4 years and the ICC have given them a exception in the name of developing Cricket and the average salary of the players is 25k AED which is a good pay scale considering how much other professionals earn even with years of experience Grin.

Previously teams like Oman and Kuwait used to recruit players from the Pakistanis and Indians residing in these countries. But now they are directly recruiting first-class players from the sub-continent. They just give an employment offer to these players so that they qualify for the residence requirement and then pack the national team with foreigners. The problem here is that teams that are dependent on native players (Kenya, Nepal, Thailand, Japan, Papua New Guinea.etc) suffer because of these mercenary teams. There should be a limit of 4-5 foreigners in the playing XI.

Yes, this is because Gulf countries do not grant citizenship to any individual except an Arab. You can work and have a permanent residence their but you will still not get citizenship in that country. I think only most of them follow the same principal with some exceptions.
