I understand that in terms of the state budget or in relation to the total cost of vaccination, this is an insignificant amount, but in natural numbers it is still significant and despite the planned savings in vaccines, this method of luring the population to vaccination seems immoral and unacceptable to me.

As mentioned by other users, the state government is only providing college scholarships and not cash prizes. So it will be wrong to say that the money is being misspent. Even during normal times, scholarships are given, and this time they are just rebranding it as a lottery. I don't see anything condemnable in this. There is no fund diversion, and no coercion is being used. And many of the other states (including Democrat ruled ones) have started similar schemes for those who are willing to get a dose of the vaccine.

On the one hand, this makes the situation more adequate, but on the other hand, such a prize for those who dreamed of education and saved money for it will not differ in any way from the usual cash prize. And I do not understand references to other states - in my opinion, this decision is wrong, regardless of who and where made it.

That's the actual reason why they're encouraging people to get vaccinated, they all want to see their old lives back to normal. Their government is doing everything that will encourage everyone to just take the shot. As for the studies about the vaccine, it has lessened the hospitalization and mortality rate that covid 19 virus has brought. So it is backed by scientific fact but there really are people that don't want to get the vaccine because of those conspiracies.

Despite the initial concerns that were being raised, it has been now established that the vaccination prevents deaths from COVID by a great deal. The biggest obstacle is the constant anti-vaxx propaganda being spread through social media and other platforms. Even here in India, a lot of people are refusing to get vaccinated, because they believe all this propaganda. I don't know what sort of people would spread such propaganda when so many are dying, but that is actually happening here.
Yes, that's the result coming from the first people that have been vaccinated and it's been proven to be effective. That's why those who still don't want it and believes on conspiracies should reconsider what they're thinking for their own protection.
We cannot stop those who keeps on making propaganda about the vaccine but what most of the people needs is to be educated how vaccines works and how effective they are.

Ask yourself this question... Why would they offer Millions of Dollars for people to get vaccinated? Answer  : Money!!!! (leave all the conspiracy theories about how harmful these vaccines might be) They hope that enough people will get vaccinated, so that restrictions on the economy could be lifted, once heard immunity will be reached. (No restrictions = More businesses operating = More Taxes for governments)  Angry

Besides taxes, the government will also have less expenses on this sector if covid infections decrease. I'm not sure how efficient vaccines are going to be, but if it really works how it's supposed to, we are going to see less people hospitalized, what means less bills for health care providers and for the government to pay and more money for the government spend in another ways.
As governments are always avid for increasing the public receipts, they will do the best they can to end the pandemic faster as possible.
Yes, that's true. The expense just because of this pandemic has growth a lot and many measures have been added, PPEs, adjustments of budgets and other things that has been added to the budgeting due to the fight against the pandemic. It's good to see when the number of infections has been dropping and that's what really the government wants and these lottery tickets and other incentives are nothing compared to the success of their fight against it.

They are indeed making it sounds different but same as you said where everything had been a casual offer in terms of scholarships and similar thing into those normal
days that we had in previous years or in ages and now they are just making to look beneficial for citizens but actually it doesnt really have any difference at all.

Having these kind of set-ups are good initiative but at least they do divide the prize into smaller parts so that lots would really benefit out.

At least their government is taking up some actions or ways on how people to get convinced on taking a shot but it cant really be avoided that people
would always have the doubts.

This is the best way to attract people to get vaccine I guess, and we might see some establishments to required vaccines upon checking in, We really have no choice but to get the vaccines that's for our own benefit as well. Government should ensure the safety of every vaccines so people have the confidence to get it, not all senior citizen wants to get the vaccine because they are afraid, the government should fight the false media with regards to vaccine. Supply is getting better now, as many COVAX facilities already provide huge amount of vaccines to those developing countries.

This probably the best way to attract people to get a vaccination in this kind of situation where people are still afraid on the possible effect or on the reaction of the vaccination in their body. I mean that people are not yet fully convinced on the effectivity rate of the vaccines that we have in hand right now but the truth is we need this kind of immunization not only for our own seek but for everyone. I don't know but it sounds attractive, a good way to implement a full immunization of the government to its institution, it shouldn't be mandatory but in voluntary way. In voluntary way with other hidden agenda, like the prize that they can get.

Whether the state is wealthy or not, I don't think taxpayers (everyone) are thrilled with such spending. And even though most people are reasonable (we will assume that this is so), there are people who, in pursuit of a ghostly chance to win a prize, will make decisions that they would not have made without this option.

The amount is not that big. Ohio is a state with population of 12 million. Two doses of the Pfizer vaccine to each citizen is going to cost the state government some $900 million. Then there are additional expenses from logistics and arrangement. The justification from the state government is that giving out $1 million in school or college scholarship is OK, if it prevents the wastage of tens of millions of USD worth of vaccines. Pfizer vaccines have limited shelf life, and they need to be stored at -70 degrees.

If they can give that amount why not, they are a rich state and they think that it will have an increase in vaccination, five million dollars is a huge amount of money and it's very tempting but if a guy made up his mind and it's against his will to get vaccinated, I don't think that $1 million dollar lottery can compel him to get vaccinated, there are people who are afraid of needle and they need consultation from a physical to overcome this fear.

BREAKING NEWS

The first winner of the lottery has been announced yesterday, it was a 22 year old woman, there are still 4 more millions to be given and even more scholarships, not only that it seems the measure has been so effective despite the criticism of some that other states are implementing their own lotteries to incentive people to get the vaccine.

congratulation to her! but I am curious how much will she actually get after the tax is taken or is the prize is tax free?
That depends on the laws that are in place on the state of Ohio and the federal taxes for prizes that you win while gambling, I doubt the earnings are tax free and I would venture to say that something between 10% to 30% would have to be paid on taxes but still it is a very good prize, even if life in the US is expensive that is the kind of money that can easily improve your life and make it way easier, after all depending where she wants to live she could buy a house with that money and avoid a mortgage which is the most important source of debt for most people.

You know what this reminds me off?  .....Elections in Africa

I worked on contract in a lot of African countries and one of the things that often happens is this... a few days before the elections, a team of people will go into the poor communities and they will give people FREE bread and T-shirts, if they promise to vote for their party. (It is legal to do this, but they are not allowed to do that on election day)

Ask yourself this question... Why would they offer Millions of Dollars for people to get vaccinated? Answer  : Money!!!! The prize is not tax free.  I just don’t know what percentage is common to be levied on lottery jackpot prizes and when they will be received, or will even wait to complete the five millionaire winners and the five scholarships for minors.

Those who have previously been vaccinated against the covid-19 virus are eligible even though there was no announcement about this incentive before, and she is one of them.  So, it turns out that the ongoing winners are not just for the citizens who opened up after the lottery raffle was announced.

This is another trending even in my country to encourage a lot of people to become vaccinated they will get something like a lottery ticket and they will probably win a house and lot, cash price, motorcycle and many more but I think as stated above on the place Ohio they are trying to give a worth a million I guess this is more worth imagine due to pandemic they can now help themselves because there are a lot of people becomes jobless.  As stated I don't think so it's more related to the world of gambling. Instead good for the Economics board. Just my cent only.

I don't think there's anything to argue against if gambling there becomes something commonplace and in fact, they provide scholarships for minors and of course it's a big effort. But yes, there will always be disagreements in every decision that is made, because if the prize continues to be given then the conflict will be about the amount of budget needed and that can be the main point that might be investigated. But for me, as long as the vaccine is certain to be safe and harmless, then of course gifts like this are no longer needed because when the vaccine is proven safe, the next step is to raise awareness about the importance of vaccination.

In an attempt to increase the number of people getting vaccinated all kind of incentives are being given in the US, one of the most interesting is that those that get at least the first dose of the vaccine at Ohio will have a chance to win one million dollars, apparently there will five be prizes so a total five million dollars will be given for those that are willing to take the vaccine, and for those that are below the age of 18 there will be full scholarships being offered as well.

What do you think of this? Do you agree with what the governor of Ohio is doing or are you against it?

Making vaccination in my opinion voluntary instead of mandatory will only endanger the vulnerable population.

So you want to make the vaccination mandatory?

That may be possible in dictatorships such as China and North Korea, but I don't think that it will be practical in countries such as US where the personal liberties are considered very important. You can't force anyone to take vaccine against their will. The authorities can encourage the population with schemes such as this one, but forcing someone (either directly or indirectly) will have just the opposite impact. In a larger perspective, those who refuse to get vaccinated are not only endangering their lives, but also that of those around them. But at this point, using force or coercion is out of question.

That's the problem on social media right now, they are spreading negative news about the vaccine and that's why many are still afraid,
I don't really blame some of them, people dying after taking the vaccine is concerning especially to the people who don't really understand why or how it happened. the real problem is that it was blown out of proportion(especially by the anti-vax), and even after explaining why or how it happened the fear of the possibility of dying when the vaccine is taken has been instilled to the people who've read about it.
