Well, money is more important than gambling and gamblers know that in the long run, they will lose money Cheesy then how would they be able to leave gambling for the sake of reputation ? xD well, but many can. But how can a week or few weeks of not gambling really bring back reputations?! Also, gambling is and should be a private thing.
For politicians who is running for councilor, if ever he have a competitor then probably his private life will be discovered for the sake of winning of other parties. And for the fact that many voters want to deal with people who have good reputation then knowing he is addicted in gambling can really affect him in the view of voters, If he really want to run for the position it should not just be a week or month, he should stop ahead of time a year or two to really convinced people he is no longer in gambling.

Ok you are gambling just for fun, your friends and neighbors knows that and a friend invited you to his party to be one of the candidates as a councilor and campaign will start in 6 months, now, of course, you need to have a good reputation, will you stop gambling just to have a good image this coming campaign and how will you defend yourself if accused as a gambler.

@robelneo you need to understand that gambling is not something to be ashamed off, everyone indulges in fun and thrilling activities eg people like to go skydiving and feel the thrill, while we gamblers like to go to casinos and feel the thrill. I would not stop doing something I love just to please others, but let’s take a scenario where I did stop gambling to get a good image now how will I convince people I’m not a gambler anymore?. As you’re facing this issue all I can say is you can tell the person what you do with your own money is none of his business, and then go on to explain your vision as a councillor hopefully that should convince him.

Hello, buddy, this is a discussion thread I'm not imposing anything on anyone but we do have different thinking on any subject, don't put me on a spotlight that I am imposing that gambling is something to be ashamed off, if that's your opinion on this discussion then so be it post your own then move on its part of the discussion, let's have great a healthy discussion, Cheesy PEACE

Yes,there is no need to stop gambling if you can't but learn how to hide the activities from the other people so you can satisfy your needs also you can save your reputation for the upcoming campaign.
Well, for my case I'm not hiding to my friends or people surrounds me that I was playing gambling, but online, of course, I don't have the time and interest to go in a real casino place because I know that it would be a hassle In different things. I think there's no wrong in letting them know that I play gambling because for me i believe that as long as I don't do anything wrong then there's nothing to be ashamed but in reality of the world of course gambling can affect what we call reputation even i know myself that gambling is not a bad influence for me, but for others it does so I think maybe there's a time that I should stop or hide that habit of mine for the sake of good reputation for others view, well that's the reality I just need to go with the norms if needed.

I'll be fine because I'm not fully a gambler, one point that might you should know a gambler will spend all his times to play gambling and also he will play just because they hope to get money or he made gambling as his source income (I made this statement because there is my friend who deem that he is a gambler).

It will be different with someone who include that gambling is just for fun, which is mean he won't spend all his times to play gambling but he will play if he needs an entertainment and make a gambling place as his solution. At least he will play it just for once a week (depend on his wishes) and he will avoid to be an addict as much as possible. Moreover, to be a councilor won't see the background his life before but an ability to make many people get interest to him.

Firstly this is the reason I gamble online.
If I really had to defend myself, I'd argue that everyone are gambling on their lives. Some with money and some with something else. Most of the things we do are a gamble, yet we do it. All of us has dark secrets, gambling is just a simple one. And I can stop gambling if I need to and I'd state that as well.

If you are a truly good man, being a gambler does not change your reputation. A good man is a man who is kind, respectful, helpful, polite, friendly, and so on. These virtues or personal character traits do not change simply because he is at the same time a gambler. I believe I will not change myself in order to gain the trust of the people. I am who I am and it is either you vote for me or not for who I really am.

Basically, if you are a goverment official or will run for a position, it is not advisable to gamble, so you need to stop for a while, but it doesn't mean that you need to stop it your entire career, why don't we try online gambling? This is much more safer and anonymous, others don't need to know who you are.

Or you can still gamble with using crypto because by using crypto, you can hide, and no one will know who you are. That will prevent the public from knowing that you gamble, and I think that is normal if we see the government officials do that thing. But if we want to build a good reputation, then yes, we should stop gambling for a while and focus on the important things that we want to do. That will not be a problem for you if you are not addicted to gambling because you can leave gambling anytime.

Ask yourself - a gambler is telling you - "can you lend me please $100? I promise to give it back to you next week"

Thats a loaded question really because never lend money to a friend, it should always be a gift or an exchange but also never borrow money to gamble is good advice to follow always.   Its a bad idea to begin with, gambling is done for leisure not profit primarily thats the advice I'd give.
Only gamble money which is spare and can be spent because thats exactly what is in proposition.    If in the OP situation the person is continually making bad judgement then sure it reflects on their reputation.   Its not exactly the betting which is the bad idea but the use of money not available to spend then sure its a mistake.

My friends and neighbors know that I gamble for fun? (at first I think neighbors mustn't know that or if they know I talk a lot and that needs to be fixed).
Well, let's imagine situation like you stated. In any way you won't have good situation. At first if you are still gambling, they will say: Oh look at him, he is a gambler, he may sell everything to gamble, it's better to avoid such people.
But at the same time even if they know that you were gambling, they will say: Oh he was gambling and was spend that amount of money ( some may say that without argument), he has bad past and you know, gamblers are always gamblers and etc.
So I think there is no better deal there.

The issue is not being a "gambler" - the issue is trust.

In history addictive gamblers have proven they can steal funds, conceal the evidence and so forth - people won't trust you if they know you are gambling with money.

In fact, in Judaism those who gamble are not allowed to be used as witnesses in court - in any type of court - simply because they are not trustworthy, you cannot trust someone who gambles.

Ask yourself - a gambler is telling you - "can you lend me please $100? I promise to give it back to you next week" - how reliable and credible will be his promise?

There's your answer.

And a gambler is always a gambler. It depends on your constituents if they will trust you knowing your history.
Because if you will stop gambling because of them, I don't think your solution is long lasting.
You will always go back to gambling and you might even go to another town or area so people would not see your other life.
If you have the real intentions to stop, the motivation should come from you, and not from other people.

Why would you think of others? it is you, who you are. You don't have to impress them and so what if they will tell you that you're a gambler? is it their money that you're gambling with? no, right?

IMHO. The best is to be who you are, you don't need the approval of others just to defend yourself of being a gambler. If they say so, let them say what they want to say as long as you're not hurting anyone. And your acts of goodness wouldn't be judged because you're a gambler.

I don't think I would stop gambling, unless gambling affected my lifestyle into a negative way.

Right now I am just gambling for fun, so there's nothing I should worry, at least I am honest with the people as even if I stop and won, I might just start gambling again, and if I do that, I feel like I am just fooling the people.

As a servant, we need to be honest to them, if they will accept or vote for us, that means they trusted us despite the fact that we are a gambler.

There's plenty of negative opinions out there on gambling as a whole, but most people know me to be very successful for my background, and yet know me to occasionally gamble at the same time. Just because you're a gambler does not mean you truly fit into the stereotype of not being able to manage your finances and you're broke, though I suppose if you're running for a position like councillor it might be a good idea to stop for a while because it's hard to change public opinions easily in a short amount of time, even though I do agree gamblers are unfairly looked down upon by many.

You could also make an argument of how simply being a gambler doesn't mean much either, without molding yourself to other peoples' expectancies. That's something I also strongly believe in. Be your version of successful and yourself, not what other people want you to be.

Maybe if I'm rich enough then people will accept me, reputation and all other factors stand as a secondary source. If the same is being done by me without any money in my hands then the community will talk we're going to give everything in the hands of gambler. He's gonna loss everything and stand empty handed without doing anything to the society.

Money plays the role, everywhere it is the important thing. Who the person is, what is his ability, what kind of attitude he has got, nothing matters and gets importance if you've money to spend. Even if he's worse people will praise him like God which is the reality.

If you are a gambler you can't deny this fact... Makes no sense to stop gambling just because you are going to be candidate. It will be used against you by your rivals, so the best you can do is to adopt a pro gambling position and use it at your favour during the campaign.
Show the positive side of gambling, the taxes it generates so the public services can keep the quality, the jobs this industry creates, even improves the local tourism. And explain not all gamblers are addicted and it's possible to play socially.

Ok you are gambling just for fun, -snip-

The reason of gambling just for fun, it's not a bad thing so I choose not to stop from gambling.
Usually if gambling activities are not due to addiction many people also consider it normal because out there are many who also gamble just for fun.
When start a campaign means that there will be days to be passed with a busy schedule that can add stress so gambling can relieve stress a little.

I know a lot of people do gambling because it's fun and entertaining, there's nothing wrong with that. Change your mindset and perspective on gambling, yes it really risks money but the fact that you're enjoying and challenging you to think, it's an effective way to entertain
and be a stress reliever to yourself.

So I think there's nothing wrong if you're thinking of it as a fun activity.
