Ok you are gambling just for fun, your friends and neighbors knows that and a friend invited you to his party to be one of the candidates as a councilor and campaign will start in 6 months, now, of course, you need to have a good reputation, will you stop gambling just to have a good image this coming campaign and how will you defend yourself if accused as a gambler.
Actually no matter what happens, the community already knows that you are a gambler and the only issue here is if they will trust you to win the position that you are running. Many people in the government who really leads our nation and country that are gambling and they are also intenting to serve and lead our country to a better future, if that's the case then just show the people and the voters the true you and stop being plastic and acting by just stopping gambling just to win the position that you are running about.

I really think in the modern day we have right now I don't see any reputation be damage because of simple gambling, I really think that most politicians are really into some gambling even though they would not show it to the public, or a paparazzi would not be seen him try and play any gambling from casino's and right now that we have crypto online gambling they can surely play a bet into their anonymous accounts, even though cryptocurrency is pretty negative to the government eye do you think they will be caught in using cryptocurrency anonymously?

^ While the campaign is ongoing you probably have a break for a while in gambling or reduce your activity in gambling. If they already know what you perhaps stand with it and explain to them that you are doing gambling just for fun and give advice to others to have a limitation on their selves. Because the problem here is how to get trust from the voters in your community and elected you as a counselor if you are always in gambling, they may doubt in the future about corruption.

In our country, public officials do not win because they are trustworthy. They win because they are popular. One senator candidate is accused of corruption, danced "Budots" on his campaign and won. I do not think simple gambling will be an issue here.

But of course, if I win, I have to give up gambling altogether because public officials are not allowed to enter casinos. That alone will sway me from running for any office.

I don't think I'm going to stop if people knows me that i'm gambling for fun and I don't gamble or lose big money , my constituents will vote on my capability and how good am I in handling my duty as a public official, even those who people who are not gambling can steal funds and become corrupt, as long as they know you as a responsible guy, they will vote for you, voters are wiser now.

The key there is that you only gamble "just for fun". You are not a notorious gambler or some gambling lord in your area.
You got the point, but even if you say that you are playing for fun, there are still some people who think that gambling is not good especially when it comes to reputation of a person.

You don't have to have because of morality, integrity, or reputation. You will stop because campaigning will also take a lot of your time away from gambling.
That is one more thing, time will be focused more on campaigns and gambling will be set aside, but still, your history as a gambler will remain and might use to you to make your reputation bad.

I have never involved myself in politics but if I were in the situation where opponents will use my being an occasional gambler against me, I probably would not bother defending myself and just tell everyone that it is accept a fact that gambling has been a part of many people's life and you are no exception.
It won't be easy, saying as it is might change their point of view at you. It will be a long process and the result if they will trust or continue to support you will depend on your own actions regarding this matter.

If I gambled before and if I stop for these six months I am about to be a candidate to some elections would be no good to me.If people knew me before that I did gamble they will have a hard time trusting me with their vote and taxes because these very taxes maybe spent not wisely. If I were an elector and knew that one of the candidates did gamble before I would never trust him with my vote.

Well, a habitual gambler will probably need to stop gambling excessively other wise people will assume he is addicted to gambling and won't trust him with such Not many will judge him if he only gambles once in awhile, just as they will see him if he is moderate alcohol drinker. So, I will likely stop if I was regular gambler

Stand that you are a gambler and you're on the process of rehab, but don't hope people will trust you that easily over it, reality people don't trust gamblers if they joins in politics that's a bad image for them but of you're known as well to help people especially in needy time and has principles in life that might be a good asset they can think of even you're a gambler.

If you're a known gambler and has bad reputation in the society that will be vital to people to think first if you really do quit over it. Reality in politics if you're a liar and make good promises that are too good to be true even you're a known gambler you'll have the chance of winning.

This are the mindset of those who does not think out of the box why are these people gamble, they don't even know all of us in life we are all gambler it depends on the bet we did in life.

You're basically saying that gambling is only for those miserable bastards and people with notorious reputation with what you said there. Might be an exaggeration but you get my point. Gambling doesn't need to be stopped for one to be labelled as trust worthy. I quite like what the first  comment said.
The issue is not being a "gambler" - the issue is trust.

It's these kinds of mentality that prevent the negative image of gambling from being removed from the eyes of the masses. People already have a hard time accepting the concept of betting money, then more issues crop up because of some bad attitudes of a few gamblers, and then they assume everyone is like that jeez.

how will you defend yourself if accused as a gambler.

Bro you're already borderline saying gambling is a crime, which is not. Sure, some countries have implemented bans on gambling, but that doesn't make the action itself a crime. More like those countries see gambling with disgust because of the notion that gambling is bad.

yes you should so that you can have a solid evidence or proof that you are not playing gambling anymore .  past is past and they shouldnt include that if they will insist to make you look bad  in front of others  but i can see that lots of candidates for councilor and also on other roles do also have a bad record and they didnt stop thier inapropriate doings no matter what other people think about them  . for those who are only going to run , they can sometimes win over the good candidates with no bad records  .

Ok you are gambling just for fun,

i will quote this first before i go on because this is important in the last part of the answer
your friends and neighbors knows that and a friend invited you to his party to be one of the candidates as a councilor and campaign will start in 6 months,
one of the candidates meaning there are others who can get the position and anything may happen beyond your understanding?
now, of course, you need to have a good reputation, will you stop gambling just to have a good image this coming campaign and how will you defend yourself if accused as a gambler.
lol why would you change in that short span of time?when you have already known as a gambler?

mentioning above that the man is just playing gambling for fun so whats all about?he wasnt addicted at all so there are plenty of reason for him to win as candidate specially when he will be truth to himself and others.

Nope, I will not. Being a gambler does not automatically mean you are a bad person, or at least a person who is not worthy of a public post. That does not follow. In these modern times, gambling is not bad at all. Gambling is considered bad only if done beyond moderation. If not, there's no problem with it. And since you are saying that I am just doing it for fun, I won't stop it just for the sake of creating a better image for the electorates. At the end of the day, many of the politicians are also big time gamblers themselves.

As you said, gambling is just for fun. Not addicted, or anything that can harm your reputation, but just for fun.
It is indeed that reputation is important when you're running as a counselor or in any position in politics, but I don't think that it will affect your reputation. As long as you can provide proof of where you get your money, there is no need to think anything about it.

The issue is not being a "gambler" - the issue is trust.

In history addictive gamblers have proven they can steal funds, conceal the evidence and so forth - people won't trust you if they know you are gambling with money.

In fact, in Judaism those who gamble are not allowed to be used as witnesses in court - in any type of court - simply because they are not trustworthy, you cannot trust someone who gambles.

Ask yourself - a gambler is telling you - "can you lend me please $100? I promise to give it back to you next week" - how reliable and credible will be his promise?

There's your answer.
