IN a little under five hours the Auckland Warriors will take on the Canberra Raiders - the Auckland team will *probably* win, but after their sixty point loss to Melbourne I'm beginning to lean back the other way and think Canberra might be in with a chance even though both teams are in the #NRLbottomSIX .

This week, there were noises made to move the NRL grand final to venues other than in Sydney where it has been since the New South Wales NRL became the National competition.

Overnight, the New South Wales State based teams were instantly promoted to become "national" teams and a consortium banded together to parachute first the Broncos, Storm Titans and Cowboys and Warriors into the National competition.  None of these team existed before they made their way into the competition.

When the National NRL was formed, the Queensland Cup became something of an overnight irrelevance where it was once a major social event in Queensland's calender.

With #NRLrelegation, lacklusture teams would have one eye on being dumped from the highest game back to the various State Cups.

To my way of thinking, being in the bottom six would be almost guaranteed relegation with the wooden spooners a guaranteed dumping.  The winner of the State Cup would then be promoted to the National competition.

Of the bottom six, I would relegate the wooden spooners as well as one state team which would mean (as the ladder stands at the moment) the Bulldogs and Raiders would be dumped and two NSW Cup teams would be promoted to take their place.

Auckland would go home (and probably dissolve given it was a manufactured team).

Likewise the Titans would probably fold and like the Auckland side, their players would then want to be parachuted into the National teams - which would mean there would have to be a provision preventing players who have been relegated from then moving sideways into other teams.  Relegation means the team AND it's players are relegated for twelve months.  Ironically, the Dolphins (an actual state based team) are waiting in the wings and could replace the dumped Titans.

The Bulldogs would return to playing in New South Wales (as would Canberra I would imagine being an island in a sea of blue).

Were relegation to occur, you couldn't have an identical named team playing at state and national levels otherwise you then have the headache of do the dumped national players get absorbed into the state based team?  Do the state based players then get dumped through no fault of their own?

If you look at the history of the South Sydney Rabbitohs https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Sydney_Rabbitohs They had a forty-three year gap between Premiership wins from 1971 and 2014 - how many years would they have been relegated I wonder?  And would Russell Crow have funded seeding the team with star players that enabled them to win in 2014 had they been relegated I wonder?

I havent seen that tournament listed.

10 years is quite a long time to try and develop the professional game, why are players
still amateur? is there not enough finance in the game?

The most famous Argentinian player in my country is Felipe Contepomi who played #10
for Leinster and scored 1225 points over 6 years. He is still currently with Leinster as a coach.

Sorry for replying so late.

Look what happens is that here the sport that monopolizes everything at a popular level is soccer as it is public knowledge.
The rest of the sports are played a lot but as secondary sports.
In the case of rugby, here in Argentina only middle or upper class people play it.

This leads to few people watching or following it in such a way that it is profitable on television (although the main tournament is broadcast by ESPN) and sponsors certain big brands.

Yes obviously I know him, if I remember correctly he is the top scorer of the team (national team) or now they passed him and this second I don't remember well.

In these years the emigration of many young players to Europe for wages is even greater. Even those who are bad travel on their own, for example, to a country that is starting to want to get into the world of rugby like Spain and play there for money.

No problem @darxiaomi

In Ireland where I am from Gaelic Games monopolises the sport scene, Soccer is
second followed very closely by Rugby Union. Gaelic Games has such a dominance
that we could partake more competitively in other disciplines but we dont.

All of our talented soccer players end up in the U.K. Support for U.K soccer teams
massively outweigh support for the national club soccer teams.

We really punch above our weight in terms of Rugby Union. It used to be seen here
as an upper middle class sport but that has changed over the last  20 or so years
since the game turned professional, its a slow process but more and more "average"
people are getting behind the sport. Hopefully it will happen for Argentinian Rugby
too.

Rugby League Australia

I managed to pick up the last two wagers for round eight:  (two from three this week so far)

Brisbane Broncos - Cronulla Sharks      Money Line   Cronulla Sharks @ 1.25   Taken Amount: 0.10 mBTC   Possible Payout: 0.125 mBTC
South Sydney Rabbitohs - Manly Sea Eagles   Money Line   South Sydney Rabbitohs @ 1.60   Taken Amount: 0.10 mBTC   Possible Payout: 0.16 mBTC

Gold Coast Titans - Penrith Panthers   Money Line   Penrith Panthers @ 1.09   Taken Amount: 0.10 mBTC   Possible Payout: 0.109 mBTC
Newcastle Knights - Melbourne Storm   Money Line   Melbourne Storm @ 1.07   Taken Amount: 0.10 mBTC   Possible Payout: 0.107 mBTC

At half time, the Titans led 4 - 0 against the Panthers (during half time the price of the Panther's blew up but I wasn't able to get online quick enough when the prices flipped 10+ for the Panthers and 1.09 for the Titans.  By the 70th minute, the price had returned to favour the Panthers (should have put more on the game Wink ) - In the end I'm happy to pick up the small win.

Next week I've locked in the Rabbitohs to win over the Broncos.  The game should be on par with tonight's block buster Rabbitohs Vs Sea Eagles game.  The Sea Eagles lost a player in the ninth minute for a dangerous tackle/throw and had some good playing over the 80 minutes.  The first half really seemed to last a long time, but that was how exciting the game plays were, not a lack of play if that makes sense?  In the end on Full time, the Rabbitohs scored (but didn't convert) to win 40 -22 .

South Sydney Rabbitohs - Brisbane Broncos   Money Line   South Sydney Rabbitohs @ 1.29   Taken Amount: 0.10 mBTC   Possible Payout: 0.129 mBTC

Also next week, the Sea Eagles play the Easts Tigers.  For the moment, I'd like to say my monies on the Sea Eagles, however, I'm going to hold off till Monday or Tuesday before I decide.

I am 1 from 2 2 games played ATM

Parramatta Eels v North Queensland Cowboys - ML Parramatta Eels @.27 - Amount Taken: $2.00 - Potential Payout: $2.54

St.George/Illawarra Dragons v Wests Tigers - ML Wests Tigers @2.43 - Amount Taken: $1.00 - Potential Payout: $3.65

Gold Coast Titans v Penrith Panthers - ML Penrith Panthers @ 1.08 - Amount Taken: 0.1mBTC - Potential Payout: 0.11mBTC

Newcastle Knights v Melbourne Storm - ML Melbourne Storm @ 1.07 - Amount Taken: 0.1mBTC - Potential Payout: 0.11mBTC

I didnt bet on the Rabbitohs v Sea Eagles game, I havent been confident too much
on the Rabbitohs. Sea Eagles losing a player early on ith a Red card was always going
to spell disaster but the score line was even enough until around 50 minutes.

Thats really the only way to bet on the Panthers and Storm, wait for them to go behind
and the odds to change otherwise its hardly worth betting.

OMG, I know I asked the question if the Broncos could retain their ladder positioning,
but not really believing they could.....

Well done to them, the result is not good for our bets. My confidence level for the Sharks
is getting less and less, not to score in the second half is very poor.

Are there other teams which could qualify and be competitive in the NRL? I know this
comes back to the conversation regarding relegation.

From a Wiki page I see and didnt realise there were so many teams from NSW.

The headquarters of the National Rugby League (NRL) is in Sydney. Greater Sydney
is home to 9 of the 16 National Rugby League teams: the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs,
Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks, Manly Warringah Sea Eagles, Parramatta Eels, Penrith Panthers,
South Sydney Rabbitohs, Sydney Roosters, and Wests Tigers, as well as being the northern
home of the St. George Illawarra Dragons, which is half-based in Wollongong. A tenth
New South Welsh team, the Newcastle Knights, is based in Newcastle.

You could probably argue the Broncos saw my tweet and reacted by holding the Sharks out of the water, however, given the number of errors the Sharks made in the first twenty minutes before they scored, I doubt that.

The game advanced 6 - 7 to the Sharks in the last five minutes of the first half then during the break they must have been told to dial back the errors - the only trouble with that was they then failed to score and allowed the Broncos the advance to 16 - 7 with ten minutes play left.  In the last few minutes, the Sharks suffered a fatal blow when a try was disallowed and so they lost.

It was 1986 (apparently) the last time an NRL game finished with a score of 16 -7 (back when NRL stood for NSW Rugby League - and that's the problem even now:  The NRL is still a new South Wales-centric league...)

Sharks, Rabbitohs, Auckland Warriors, Roosters, Eels and the Tigers to maul the Dragons - Plus the Panthers and Storm to win their respective games against the bottom rung Titans 12th and Knights 14th.

As I said a couple of rounds back I'm not counting on the Broncos doing very well from here on in.  The Raiders may well put on a brave face after last week's drubbing, but I doubt they've learned their lesson.

Going into NRL round eight we have:

  • #NRLtopSIX - Panthers, Storm, Eels, Sharks, Cowboys
  • #NRLmidFOUR - Sea Eagles, Rabbitohs, Broncos, Dragons
  • #NRLbottomSIX - Auckland Warriors, GC Titans, Wests Tigers, Knights, Raiders, Bulldogs.

Roosters? The game itself between the Dragons and Roosters was definitely a game
of two halves, Dragons only to score in the first half, 14loints and the Roosters to only
score in the second half, finishing
up 14-12.

The Storm met the Warriors with a tornado, 70-10

Thats a great bet Timelord, and I was thinking the Rabbitohs were not going
to let the same thing happen to them. It will be hard to bet against the
Wests Tigers next round when they play the Dragons.

I am 4 from 5 this round

I'm now at six from seven bets with two games still to play.

This afternoon, the Eels walked all over the Knights to win 39 - 2 while in the first ten minutes of the Panthers Vs Raiders game it was tied at 6 - 6 however, the Raiders then went to the pub to watch the game and the panthers ended up winning 36 - 6.

The price for Wests Tigers has dropped considerably 2.27 against the Dragons 1.6 in the clash next week.  If the Dragons are plucked by the Roosters tomorrow, then it might be worth betting on the Tigers next week.

I've just managed to place a bet on tomorrow's Intrust Super Cup match between Burleigh and PNG Hunters

Burleigh - PNG Hunters Money Line Burleigh @ 1.11 Taken Amount: 0.06 mBTC Possible Payout: 0.067 mBTC

(Given PNG are competing at the Queensland State Level, were they to win the Cup, I'd have no hesitation in promoting them to the NRL for nexxt year and relegating one of the Queensland teams, probably the Titans back to the State comp until such time as they win at the State level again.

A Luke Brooks field goal secured back-to-back wins for Wests Tigers after defeating
South Sydney 23-22 in a thrilling clash at CommBank Stadium.

I was placing the bests for this week (about an hour prior to the Tigers game starting last week) and saw their price has blown out to 10+ so I started thinking after five weeks of losses they might just be hungry enough for a win.  At the same time I saw this weeks price for a Tigers win was around five, so I clicked on the two wagers to make a parlay to see what the price would be, then wondered could they win back to back?

So I placed the minimum amount on a parlay ... and it WON!

I heard most of tonight's game on the radio and the last ten minutes was thriller - five attempts at a field goal (four by the Tigers, one by the Rabbitohs) with the last of five attempts scoring one point with thirty seconds to go, then the Tigers got possession of the ball.  Game Over.  I win.

Last night's game between the Broncos and Bull Dogs was entertaining enough - by the twenty minute mark the Bull Dogs were winning 10 - 0 and at half time, the Bull Dogs were still leading 10 - 6.

After the break, the Broncos ploughed on the points.  With ten minutes to go I was thinking to myself the Broncos need to score again just to rub it in - and they did with five minutes on the clock, they won the game 34 - 14

The most famous Argentinian player in my country is Felipe Contepomi who played #10
for Leinster and scored 1225 points over 6 years. He is still currently with Leinster as a coach.
