Actually even though it may seem dying, bitcoin is still top 1 in the market charts for a reason and I believe it will eventually goes up again since more people are buying and holding it now taking advantage to its recent price off. But your idea about eth is also good so I suggest that you invest in both so you can be ready just in case one of them fails.
I guess that it is wise to buy bitcoin now as its price is lower. Unlike its price months ago, it is lower. Bitcoin price is volatile. It fluctuates. It changes from time to time. So buying bitcoin now means that you may earn profit when it shoot up again. Also, bitcoin have more users/holders so trading here is also good. Just spend what you can afford to lose. Do not spend all of your money here because it is also possible that it will fail and you will encounter a great loss.

I think that you should by BTC as first step in cryptocurrency world and when you will have enough BTC (it is individual amount - 1 BTC for me for example), you can buy another altcoins.

I will suggest you buy both. it is a good idea to have diversification into different alts. it pays to do that. Just invest in both of them. it will pay in the run long.

Once it reach it's peak start selling of your coins and gain profit from holding on to your coins. One advantage of buying bitcoin though is it is very popular and it will not die soon.
