You picked maybe the only team in the world that makes your thesis float Smiley
Napoli and Inter Milan are also good examples last season. They had very good champions league runs last season and did great in the league too, winning the Scudetto and reaching top 4 respectively. I am sure there are a couple of other examples, besides the top teams (Real Madrid, Bayern, Barcelona in their prime and maybe Atletico Madrid).

I also agree that with the squad of Tottenham the fewer matches they need to play, the better for them.
A fitting end to the battle between Wolves and Newcastle. The only downside is the injury picked up by Neto, I really hope he gets well soon.

Brentford does it again, I think this is their 3rd consecutive win at Stamford Bridge. That alone is telling so much about the worst 1 billion dollar team in football's history.
I wonder what happens next there - will they keep pushing this or will they change strategy? If they change it, who will take all these players on lucrative 7-year contracts?

I have never seen such incompetence on a elite sports level. I feel that an average kid with Football Manager would have put together a much more balanced team with more quality.

...no Europe games will help keep the squad fresh.
I have always had the theory that a successful European football campaign helps a club's league performance and not the opposite.
Sure it is more matches to prepare for but it is not a remarkable amount of football (14 in UCL) and there are pockets of spaces for the team to prepare effectively for their next match and take it one at a time.

If the team can build good momentum in both competitions like City did last season, they can better themselves overall and make it difficult for teams to play against them.
Out of the 5 premier league titles City has won, I think they got to the semi final of the UCL in 3 or 4 of those occasions.

City and Guardiola are known for their rotation policy and having the longest bench in the world. I agree with you that City can use those games to build momentum but City is in a league of its own.

Spurs are heavily dependent on few key players like I mentioned and they are much better off without extra games. Just look what Europe will do to Brighton and Newcastle this season. And both of those clubs have more players to jump in than Spurs in my opinion. It is cumulative effect, maybe it will not be seen immediately but it will be seen in the long run and felt on their PL scores.

Europe has other benefits, like experience for players and best possible shopping window so clubs gain much more then they loose but it has it costs as well. That is also one of the main reasons City runs away with league in spring. Everybody else gets fatigued while they are on top of their form.

A bit lucky for Spurs tonight - Palace will leave the pitch thinking they should have gotten more from the game.
Still - to be undefeated after 10 games while topping the table - and all that after selling Kane - a fantastic achievement.

I really do feel that they don't have enough to sustain a serious title challenge. They should be really close to a top4 finish already though - which was surely the ultimate goal at the beginning of the season.

I'm really curious - what will they do if they wll still be near the top of the table come January? Will they go for a title-winning player or 2?
I can already imagine all the memes if Spurs win the title and Bayern does not. Kane social accounts would not survive that  Grin

Spurs are playing nice football and I like seeing them on the top but no way they can win the title with these players. One injury to Maddison or Son and it will all come crumbling down. I don't think they can even find replacements for Bissouma and Sarr in their team but I really hope they will ride the wave for as long as possible. They deserve something with the way they are playing and no Europe games will help keep the squad fresh.

After Leicester City became the champions in the Premier League years ago it isn't impossible for Tottenham to become the champions as well. However as long as there is Manchester City&Pep Guardiola it is really very difficult for a different team to become the champions in the Premier League. On top of that as you said as well Tottenham's bench is very weak. It is a big chance for them that they aren't competing in European cups this season.

Hello! My name is Chelsea. Come to my crib to take 3 points any time. We have lots of expensive furniture that does something right every now and then but in general, feel free to come in and break them =)

Caicedo must be wondering what the hell happened. This wasn't even a sucker punch. Brentford actually deserved the win!

Yeah that would be so nice, even bigger than Coutinho leaving Liverppol to get beaten by the Reds en route to winning UCL (yeah he won with Bayern but absolutely not on the same level).

Spurs definitely deserve something. Son most of all for the way he just gives everything. We helped them with three points but I don't think they survive any sort of injury/fatigue crisis.

Palace had roughly 6 corners and 9 attempts on goal in the first half, while Tottenham had 3. They didn't take advantage of the chances they had, which is understandable given that they were missing several of their main attacking players. Tottenham fought hard for that point.

They still have Harry Kane's money, so they may bring in a natural striker and move Son to his natural position.

Tottenham will now surely be topping the league at the end of this matchweek and their fans will be believing now that they may be returning to champions league football at the end of this season after a couple of years out. They will need more time at the top to really start dreaming about the league and believing those dreams.

Lucky to get the correct score. I hoped Palace will score but did not really expect them to.

It's too early to predict the league champion, and I'm sure Tottenham players aren't either. Thinking about it puts more pressure on the players, and the team becomes a target for other teams as well. This season, their main goal is to qualify for European football (Europa or UCL) at the end of the season. I always assumed that life without Kane would be difficult and that the team would struggle but that's not the case as the team appears to be more dangerous than ever. There is no target guy, and everyone works well together.

Great game tonight; the first half was a little sluggish, but they came back stronger in the second half.

I forgot to put in my prediction for the Tottenham game, so I'm glad I was able to put in the rest. I could have gotten 1.5 points tonight if I had gone for a 2-0 as I wanted to.

I thought that Tottenham would win by 3-1. However the better playing side in the first half was Crystal Palace. Tottenham absolutely need to change some things in the second half. Maddison was very ineffective. He wasted a chance on which he could have passed the ball to Son. If he was able to pass it quickly Son was going to make his team get ahead at the beginning of the match most probably.

Edit: While I was making this post Crystal Palace scored an own goal. Maddison made them score that. lol

I got 1-2 correct result but so far things are looking solid. Tottenham has the lead so still anything can happen. Good thing that they took the lead now opens up the match and Tottenham has a chance with a counter attack to seal the match so hopefully they win this at least.

I predicted 2-0 in favor of Tottenham and now I feel like the blind VAR stole 3 points from me (didn't the ball touch Ayui's hand?). Now a huge number of those who made the “classic” forecast of 2-1 for the favorite found themselves in a good plus.
Overall, I am pleased that Tottenham continues to lead, plus there is a little pressure on the pursuers due to the fact that they were the first to play the game and are now ahead by 5 points.

Im so happy with the result now i have gotten 3 more points and took a big lead over some players. Now i think the top 4 are really close and will fight to win the pool. Another good start for me in the pool so hopefully tommorow i get some good results to try and make a bigger advantage. Got lucky with that var decision but happy with the correct result.

Anyone else think Ramsdale would have kept Chelski out better yesterday (I know he wasn't even on bench for family reasons)? Not that I'm calling for Raya to be rescinded. I know Arteta wants a style of play he can get from Raya and that takes time but even that doesn't excuse his positioning (which needs to be better if he will fit Arteta's keeper vision). Kind of feel for Aaron.

If Ramsdale had been in goal, we would have been up 4-0 by the 80th minute because there is no way he would have saved those one-on-one situations against Jackson and Palmer in the second half. I can't blame Raya for the Mudryk goal; I've seen such errors many times against outstanding goalkeepers.

P.S. I only found out today but sad day for English football as United lost one more thing good for them. Rest in peace, Sir Bobby.

Must be tough for united fans losing both Sir Bobby and Mrs. Ferguson just few weeks apart.

Compared to recent signings (Caicedo, Enzo, Nunez and Rice) I will say Alexis was a steal of a transfer. Only Rice has performed better than him... and maybe arguably Enzo in recent games and he is cheaper than all of them.
With enough time he will surely improve.

Rice is a homegrown player who proved himself in the league for years, and every honest football fan understood he was not going to flop or struggle to adjust to life at the Emirates.

As an Arsenal supporter, I will very much not want doubt to start creeping into the choice to go with Raya over Ramsdale. The gaffer has made the decision and he has been impressive for a number of matches, especially in his distribution which is the major part of his game. One positioning mistake should not affect his confidence or his starting position, if it gets too frequent then we can have that discussion.

...He has been slightly careless but as you said, improving. I just feel he was not really worth the money, not his fault. I trust in Klopp but our stealth buys are usually where we excel (Szoboszlai case in point).

Hoping Alexis improves and meets his rating for once.
He has been really decent today with his passing (long and short) and also his close control. I also think he has been decent all season and he has an average sofascore rating of 6.95. Boy is still settling into the team and will only improve from here.

Agreed. He played one delicious spray to the right flank mid-first half that I thought was probably the game's best pass. He has been slightly careless but as you said, improving. Your Chelsea is improving. Good game last night. I was surprised to see the result. I thought Arsenal will have a win from this match and I went with a 1 - 2 for Arsenal. But it did not happen.

However, leading by 2 goals and then giving away two points is not that good at all. Good luck.

We started well and ended poorly, which is nothing new; we just don't know how to sustain playing at a higher tempo till the end of the game; we usually appear vulnerable 30 minutes into the second half and give away cheap goals.

I got an exact scoreline in the pool and chose Chelsea to win on my bet slip. I didn't think we'd ever play Arsenal the way we did in the first half.
