We have underdog teams like Morocco, Australia or South Korea in the next round, while big names like Belgium, Uruguay, Germany eliminated already.
Most likely, we can also add Denmark here. Most people had seen Denmark advancing from group stage easily as well but instead, we have Australia advancing from that group.  Cheesy
Looks like we'll have some less difficult tasks for the big favorites but after many surprises, it's absolutely on the table to have some big surprises in the round of sixteen, again.

Not a single team made 9 points during group stage, Brazil lost against Cameroon today and Portugal lost against South Korea today as well.
So far, only England, Morocco and the Dutch team made 7 points during group stage (only teams not defeated so far).

And today, even one additional goal for Switzerland or Cameroon and Brazil would only be second in their group...

I doubt Australia goes further away as they face Argentina tonight which I think will "massacre" Australia by beating them with a tennis result if they play at full power and there is no reason tonight to not play at full power because by not doing so they risk a lot, they risk the World Cup so finally we are in that time where calculations are out of the equation.

I also wonder why Netherlands had an odd 1.96 against USA and this scared me so I only bet on them to qualify further at 1.45 which I think is like a sure bet.

Brazil looked like they were in training rather than in normal game, they were already qualified and this was to be somewhat expected,Cameroon even in the first half had the most dangerous of occasions to score a goal but they did so in the additional time of the second half.Brazil created more chances but the chances were either neutralized by Cameroon goalkeeper which for me was the hero of the game or otherwise not finish well by Brazil attackers.I liked very much Antony as player despite Martinelli showed much better performance tonight for Brazil.

If we did bet on the underdogs every day we would be "rich" now, that is how many upsets this World Cup had and I want to cite Beckenbauer which said "if you want to see beautiful football again remove football betting",sounds to me like this was the case so far in this World Cup.

These posts didn't aged well...
Next Switzerland - Serbia. I don't like footbal that Switzerland is playing, but it works often. I think we should prepare for low scoring game.

What do people see in Cameroon, though? Do they have some special mojo? Brazil is going to destroy them, it's gonna be hard to watch

Opposite than I expected, Serbia - Switzerland was great game to watch. Switzerland wins game 3:2 and goes to the next round.
Haven't paid much attention to Brazil game, so I'm wondering how they managed to lose it. Yeah, they made lot of changes in squad compared with previous games, but I think that it wouldn't be right to call players that they had today as their second squad.
Don't know how to summarize group stage, it was strange. We have underdog teams like Morocco, Australia or South Korea in the next round, while big names like Belgium, Uruguay, Germany eliminated already.

Looking at how the B teams of these top nations play the third round of the world cup , I can only say that the next generation is very much in trouble and in the next 5 to 10years all these teams will be average teams and upsets will no longer be the term if they lose.
Inspite Brazil guaranteed to qualify to the R16, watching Brazils B team play is not convincing enough that the have the samba football preserved.

South Korea was outstanding.
Feel bad for Uruguay.

Three team I like so far gone from the world cup. Mexico, Germany and Uruguay. May be it's time for Serbia too.

...Poland is okay but Japan is disappointing.

Poland Yes! Japan no, mmhh! let me say that before the World Cup; yes.
(In fact Poland was my selections for the Bracelete Challenge.)

But unless you're a Polish fan, there's nothing to say, it's the passion of football to see each team in our country advance as it is... but if there's a team that doesn't deserve to be in the 16s, it's Poland, even Morocco has more merits.

But to say that Japan is disappointing, really not!! it is one of the national teams that has the best technical disposition when it plays, then the luck factor or the opposing team played badly and that is why they won, no not with Japan.

Against Spain it was a master class on how to put pressure on the rival with the 10 players (Nipponese) push to Spain own field, when Spain tried to play in their own box and not clear the ball (Luis Enrique's scheme that must be followed) there were all the Japanese on the Spanish field, everyone! making a reckless 4-5 disposition, (e.g.)you can see it in minute 47, with Ritsu Doan, how an attack is generated on the opposing team without having the ball.

Japan vs. Croatia is going to be a difficult game for the Croats, a lot to lose and a lot to prove, it's going to be a very tactical game, Japan's disadvantage is that their game is being deciphered...

So, this match is the tactical strategy of Japan against Modric and company, the individual aspect will decide this game and it may be the game that we all want to see from Modric.

And finally...Korea among the best 16...

By the way (+1) the "Delorean strategy" is repeated again for the exact result.  Smiley

You could see how surprised the Uruguayans were, all of their main attacking options were already subbed off. Maybe not the best strategy looking backwards..

agree on Uruguay tactics, they missed that Portugal has same mentality as Spain, and probably Uruguayans as well, do not play if you do not need that
have to say that I cannot believe that they did not had some bench players that wanted to prove themselves and score points against South Korea

and moreover, since you cannot play with second team from your group before finals, if you plan to reach far, it is better to let better team pass the group, they can kick some favorites afterwards, Korea probably can't do that, or probability is lower

Well - I have to admit I did not expect to see South Korea in the knockouts. They did try to attack though, and it paid out at the end of the game.

Colleagues, don't you think that if we assume that the surprises are over (I think it is), then the couples in the 1/8 finals are actually all boring?
I don't see any game that I'm ready to watch with the feeling that two big teams are competing and feel the tragedy of someone going home. And I now hope that we will no longer see the underdogs win - because then in the 1/4 finals, some of the games will again have a foregone conclusion. Or is it worth hoping for some kind of underdog which can reach the end and take the title?

The Best Tipster on the Forum!!
I’m up into 8th, still a bit off 1st place unfortunately. Sissy is on fire in the lead, well done to him. Still lots of games to go though, I guess when the knockout rounds begin we will see who can mount a challenge to win it.
That’s where it will get interesting.

The pool is extremely intresting and i didnt expect that at all. I messed up so bad on some results that im already out of the competition but still want at least that weekly reward if possible. I think we will see a lot more turnovers at the top of the leaderboard

What a drama, this is why I love last round when both games are played on same time. It looked that everything is going fine for Uruguay, they were leading 2:0 and here comes additional time of Portugal - South Korea game where South Korea punished Portugal by scoring goal in transition. And seems that Portugal weren't concerned about it at all, they remained to be 1st.
South Korea goal give flashbacks to previous World Cup where Belgium eliminated Japan by scoring similar goal in transition:

It seems that missed penalty simply killed Ghana. Remembering 2010 World Cup, missing penalty against Uruguay have too big mental impact for Ghana.
Next Switzerland - Serbia. I don't like footbal that Switzerland is playing, but it works often. I think we should prepare for low scoring game.

it seems very fierce for rank 1 this round because at the moment rank 1 ~ 3 only has 0.5 points different

Anyways great to see Uruguay out, they ever play like this, making tricks, and playing dirty. So go home, they can make more goals, but as always they choose to not make them and make time, and the Korea goal comes and they have no time to do another one.

I move into 10th place thanks to correctly assuming Croatia would hold Belgium to a draw. I only did not expect both teams not managing to score.
I gave up the pool lol. If there are any announcement of having a reward from the bottom then I am in again.

I played all in yesterday night at an odd of 1.10 for Germany and I know I should not be doing such things
You should not do the all in thing. I even know people who lost add of 1.01. In gambling there are nothing as sure win. Always have some back up money to try recovering the loss although when you are too much in gambling you will eventually lose.

May be for some Japan's performance was impressive. Honesty speaking I did not see their matches but only the last 15 to 20 minutes yesterday and I did not like how they played. Germany gave their all to have a spot but on the other hand Japan only played with advantage.
-snip

one have to praise Germany, they could also let Costarica and push Spain home, but they played to win

doing that they ruined some of my bets, but cannot say that I am mad on them, they probably could no play better, second time in a row they are out, and asian/central america team combination knocked them (in Russia were Mexico and South Korea - both lost)

I played all in yesterday night at an odd of 1.10 for Germany and I know I should not be doing such things but I had a feeling that Spain would screw up because at first I wanted to go all in for Spain but I am very glad I did not and moved to Germany.I won a bit of extra money and I am happy for that amount.

For today I just put low amount for Brazil to win because they can do whatever they want in that game, but I am going again all in tomorrow for Netherlands not to win but to qualify I think it is a sure bet and their odd is near 2 to win so to qualify should be in the range of 1.5-.1.57 or something a bit more.
