I move into 10th place thanks to correctly assuming Croatia would hold Belgium to a draw. I only did not expect both teams not managing to score. MOTM getting only 7 rating tells the whole story!

They say the calculator Luis Enrique with one stone killed two birds,he is avoiding a direct clash with Brazil and also put Germany out of the World Cup by not playing seriously against Japan. His calculations were only right because Germany is an honorable team as they had about 16 minutes with the additional time and they could have let Costa Rica win by getting out of the World Cup also Spain but Germany has a winning mentality and they did play honestly and did not do any calculation.

If you watched the game, which I only did replay, I felt you're right here. He almost purposely made the players look like they need to score, but they were in first half actually walking around a lot, passes 300 to Japan 30 something like that, but I'm glad Germany played properly not to kick Spain out. Players and coaches may say they don't know results but come on, for sure, they cannot avoid overhearing Smiley

Amazing performance from Japan, to progress from this group is a terrific achievement.
I am disappointed. Japan do not deserve the 2nd round.
Japan has shown an impressive group stage so far, except the loss to Costa Rica.*
In my opinion, their advancement to the next round is more than well deserved. Winning against 2 World Cup favorites, Spain and Germany, is just outstanding.

*Very interesting to know that Costa Rica, won against to Japan, the winner of this group, where Japan was winning against Germany AND Spain.   Cheesy Cheesy
May be for some Japan's performance was impressive. Honesty speaking I did not see their matches but only the last 15 to 20 minutes yesterday and I did not like how they played. Germany gave their all to have a spot but on the other hand Japan only played with advantage.

Other day I felt the same for Mexico. They were same as Germany, were giving everything just to score a goal and on the other hand Croatia were just making sure they do not concede a goal to get the spot.

Yeah, ball didn't left pitch fully and our eyes is lying again. Without VAR probably even Japan players wouldn't protest against called out.

I really don't understand how VAR came to the conclusion that the ball in this picture wasn't out of play already, ffs! if the same scenario had happened within the goal post, I'm trying to imagine showing this to a team and say it's not a goal, but I guess we'll never now know right ?

This was the craziest group so far. At one point both Spain and Germany were out of the knockouts, simply unbelievable.

Amazing performance from Japan, to progress from this group is a terrific achievement. They managed to beat both Spain and Germany, incredible.

I won't lie, we in Croatia will love this draw. But Japan should not be underestimated.

To conclude:

What a great day... I love football...

It would have been pretty funny If Germany had not manage to turn the tie around in Spain's favour, so Japan and Costa Rica would have eliminated both Germany and Spain, that'd have been some nightmare and probably increases the chances of their opponents in knockout stages.

I'm not trying to drive a narrative here, but I do think Spain didn't concede those two goals intentional, but I've got a slight conviction that they didn't try as much to get back on level terms, Imagine losing a game and still sure of qualification and also they get to avoid Croatia and Brazil in the next K/O rounds, but underestimating Morocco might be very costly for them.

I wouldn't be surprised if Germany really lost against Costa Rica, after the first goal and while Spain was still leading, Germany got tired and probably though an easy 0-2 or 0-3 would be enough. Germany could have scored 7 goals on Merit and kicked out Spain.
But after scoring the first goal (9') Germany was hoping for Spain to win, which was a big mistake.

Whats the point to be so defensive and ruin the entertainment of true football. When 9 players make two line of wall and never come forward to take ball, it's like Japan was playing Kabaddi. Standing in their position and waiting for opponent to come forward then they will stop them.
Well, since Japan turned the 0-1 to a 2-1, Japan didn't have any reson to attack further, especially when Spain will get more space when Japan keeps attacking. Playing defensive and trying to close any spaces for Spain's "Tiki-taka" was Japan's best opportunity. And Japan did it right.
After all, it's all about advancing to the next round. Good job from Japan, they did a very good job today.

Ulven you are the owner of the Delorean, congratulations there should be a special prize for the most unexpected exact result the only one that could beat him was CRC 2x Ger1...temporarily and no one had it...

Unexpected classification for this group, even momentary pass for CRC to 16ths.

What a great day... I love football...

Thanks,

Yes, my friend, football is full of surprises, especially the World Cup matches. Although I got the correct result for the Japan match, it was not completed with me, with Germany winning, so my bet became in the wind.

Tomorrow my focus will be on the Brazil-Portugal match, especially as they have qualified for the round

what have we just experienced?

Really weird World Cup, we have moments with both Germany and Sapin out of competition.

Germany two times out in group stage, what a shame for german football.

Related to the two VAR decisions..... today the football dies, and now its more like soccer.

I did not see the Spain vs Japan from the beginning. I was watching Germany vs Costa Rica and only switched when Germany was 2 - 1 behind. Costa Rica was leading the group followed by Japan at 2nd. Whats the point to be so defensive and ruin the entertainment of true football. When 9 players make two line of wall and never come forward to take ball, it's like Japan was playing Kabaddi. Standing in their position and waiting for opponent to come forward then they will stop them. In the 2nd round whoever will be against Japan they will have to settle in the tie-breaker.

Yesterday we lost Mexico and today we lost Germany. Both team fought hard but super unlucky not to get a spot for the 2nd round. Poland is okay but Japan is disappointing.

Crazy games. At one point it looked like both Spain and Germany were going out. Did anyone predict Japan topping their group on the bracket challenge? I'm guessing not.

Oh come on, Poland goes through after today's performance? They were horrible throughout the whole 90 minutes.

It is a shame that fair play can be the deciding factor in such situations, it pushed Mexico to go all in and concede that late goal.
Otherwise Poland would still go through, but only because they received less yellow cards than Mexico.

I recall that happening only once, last WC when Japan qualified based on that criteria ahead of Senegal.
This was totally undeserved for Poland, they never even thought to try and score a goal against Argentina, they can thank only Szczesny for their place in knockout stages. Saved a couple of almost certain goals and kept their goal difference good enough to push Mexico into overextending. While we are on Szczesny saves, he even saved a penalty by Messi and I must admit this was one of the strangest penalties I have ever seen awarded.

I mean I'm sure they tried; Argentina was just too strong for them. They definitely didn't deserve to go through but it was cards that got them there in the end.

First of all, how it's offside? I'm not against VAR, but such calls is simply ridiculous

In general, Belgium didn't looked better than in previous games and they deserved to end tournament after group stage. Though, Lukaku wasted so many moments and scoring at least one of it maybe would be enough to reach next round. It's a bit sad that this golden Belgium generation ended their era without significant achievements, but seems that they have problems not just in pitch but in locker room too.
Meanwhile Morocco ends in 1st place in their group, unexpected, but deserved.

The hands are irrelevant to the decision so not sure why they're circled but that was a bizarre call anyway and I don't think should have been offside. Either way it's one of those decisions where it's down to millimetres.

Now it looks like both Germany and Spain will be on their way home tomorrow. LOL.
When Costa Rica took a lead, both Spain and Germany were out and it's crazy. Germany eventually won against Costa Rica and saved Spain from elimination.
You can don't agree with me, but IMO, Germany was worst team in group. Yeah, Costa Rica lost 7:0, but win against Japan and fight against Germany were above expectations. While Germany didn't showed why they should be in next round.
Spain lost against Japan and they played with fire today. Very solid game and I'm happy for Japan reaching next roun, even if it's not good for me in betting. And here we have another interesting call from VAR:

Yeah, ball didn't left pitch fully and our eyes is lying again. Without VARVprobably even Japan players wouldn't protest against called out.

yeah, between fair play and easier route, Spain chose easier route, and will face Morocco
and Croatia also can celebrate, they got Japan

Portugal and Brazil will eventually have that choice tomorrow, but they will not need it, since they are waiting for second placement in the groups

yeah, Spaniards decided to sent Germany home, but they wont get easier route to SF, since they will be first in the end
Germany also conceived from Costarica, they seem as they know the time has come to go home

and all looked different on half-time, will be interesting to see is there enough strength in Germany to at least win this game

/edit:

What an intense 45 minutes on both pitches. Holy F*ck. Very unfortunate for Germany in the end, but tbh they were not eliminated today, but already in the first group match with the 1-2 defeat against Japan.

And well, there's not much to say about Japan: Very well deserved, if you beat both Germany and Spain with 2:1, then you definitely belong in the last 16. What a night.

Japan!! I don't care if my pool picks lose, I got money on Japan, and they already did me a favour with Germany, am I getting double joy from them? Now almost regret I only put a freebet on it, but hey, great returns @8.4

2nd goal was not flagged offside or out, and apparently inconclusive technology to decide if it went out of play but my man Ritsu Doan is, as I was talking about in Bundesliga often, my dark horse performer of the tournament! Two subs, he went to Freiburg as a hopeful, but he's proving himself to be amazing on the world stage.

Don't care how the game ends, this is so fun!

It's a joke lol. This VAR decision, WTF? I was yelling at my TV in the scene because I was so upset. It's a real shame for Belgium's golden generation to be eliminated from a major tournament again without a triumph. Out in group stage, uff.

In Group E it looks like Spain and Germany will make it to the last 18. Both teams leading 1-0 in their last group matches. But let's wait and see, there are still 45 minutes to play. Plenty of time for Germany to concede goals.  Cheesy

/edit: Okay, I jinxed it. Japan leading 2-1 against Spain, LOL.

The offside call was abysmal, agreed. I really like VAR, it helps a lot, but the people making these calls need some serious training.

We are through and in general we deserved it, but Lukaku should have scored today and we can consider ourselves a bit lucky at the end.

Let's see who we get in the knockouts, so far it looks like Spain - the team whose composition suits us the least.

For once I agree and we were all together losing a better team to watch, I doubt anyone put Poland through in the bracket. Didn't even remember it happened before but rules are rules and Mexico or any South American team would probably never go through on fair play.

Worse, I was going to get 6 points from both games and because they had to push for the goal they let Saudi score, so I missed a precious 1.5 points, which in this pool is worth many positions.

Also, love Messi but he will be so ashamed to fall to the ground, get the penalty, and miss. Now Poland gives France a free pass, what a match France Mexico should have been!
