tennis at the Olympics has always made us laugh and let's face it it doesn't count for anything it's just to say I won the Olympics, there are other tournaments that count and it's certainly not that, just look at the best ones not even taking part, having said that Nadal was already cooked before that the match began so yes I was also happy that he came out and that Novak meets a stronger player
How do you say that tennis is not considered important in the Olympics? I agree that you cannot compare this to Wimbledon and any other grand slams but this does not mean that it is not important for the tennis player. A gold medal in the tennis Olympics always matter.
The match between Nadal and Djokovic was easily won by Djokovic. (6-1 and 6-4). I think the era for Nadal is over and it is not that he has lost his form but it is the age factor which becomes a drawback when he is facing opponents.
In a tennis players career the pinnacle of the sport are the Grand Slams, 4 per year - Australian Open,
Roland Garros, Wimbledon and the US Open. Its a lucky few that get to win one let alone all 4.
Rarer still is to win the "Calendar Slam" all 4 slams in the one season.
Lets say a player is playing for 15 years, he/she has 60 chances to win 1 slam over the course of their carreer.
Move to an even rarer accolade - the Olympics. Over the course of their career a tennis player will have
approximately 4 chances to win a Gold medal, thats how rare they are.
If you want to something which is at the very top of a career in Tennis is completing a "Golden SLam"
all 4 slams and a Gold Olympic medal.
The most rarest is completing all these in one season, there is only a 1 person club in that one.
A Golden Slam is defined as having won each of the four Grand Slam tournaments (Australian Open,
French Open, Wimbledon, US Open) as well as an Olympic Gold medal. Only one player (Steffi Graf)
has managed to achieve this feat in a single year (1988), although the Bryan brothers also achieved
their wins consecutively. Serena Williams is the only player to have achieved a Golden Slam in both
singles and doubles.
