For me too, seeing United States of America not in the top 3 is a big surprise but again this is very early in the Olympics. The results will change considerable once we reach near the end of the Olympics. If USA did not top the table, they will surely be at number 2 spot.
By the way, are you betting on who will win most medals in this olympics?
It will be interesting to know what odds bookmakers give for China and United states.

It will be really difficult for the Chinese to beat the Americans. Athletics is scheduled for the last few days and US is much ahead of China in this discipline. During Tokyo 2020, despite playing in familiar weather conditions the Chinese couldn't get past the Americans. Back then US finished at the top with 39 golds, and Chinese trailed them with 38. This time I expect the gap to be wider. Anyway, China is a rapidly ageing country (their population is naturally declining for the last few years) and it will be reflected in the Olympic medal tally.

In the covid delayed Tokyo Olympics the difference was of Gold Medal was just one between the two nations. Also if we see the overall medal race, the USA got 113 as compared to China 89.

I don't think it would be a surprise if America is on the top and most of the predictions too suggest the same.
Also the countries that host the Olympics usually get more medals and this time i think that France may double or triple the gold medals they gain in Tokyo Olympics.

No special glasses, no headphones, hands in his pockets and he won the silver medal. He left his mark on the Olympics with this style and stance and will be remembered for a long time.
Congratulations...

It is also worth noting that he is 51 years old. As for special equipment, it may not sound very serious, like anti-glare glasses and headphones (and a device to block the view of the second eye), but from the outside it looks extremely unnatural. For me, it would be logical if there were two separate categories - shooting with special technical means and without.

This was truly incredible, it shows pure talent, he certainly showed the world that no equipment is needed to help him do what he really knows how to do. Along with Gabriel Medina's photo, this photo is without a doubt one of the great moments of this Olympics.

They are usually kicking ass in swimming and unless I am not mistaken, they haven't won a single gold medal there at this Olympics and that is part of reason for fewer gold medals won.
United States have won half of their six gold medals in swimming.
They won gold medals in men's 4×100m freestyle relay, women's 100m butterfly and women's 1500m freestyle.

It will be interesting to know what odds bookmakers give for China and United states.
Currently, the odds are 1.3 for United States and 3.5 for China.

China is topping the medal table as of now, with 11 golds and 7 silvers. The United States is in the 5th position with 6 golds. This maybe a big surprise for a lot of people, but I was expecting this. The same happened during the Tokyo Olympics as well. During initial stages, US was far behind and China was leading. But in the last 3-4 days, the Americans closed the gap and finished at the top. Of the 11 golds that China has won till now, 4 has come from shooting and 3 came from diving (which is once again, expected).

Pretty funny to see France getting so many medals only in first 8 days of Olympic games, when they got almost same amount during whole Olympic Games in 2020.
Its kinda expected for hosts to win more medals than they usually do.

United States are performing bad this year. Only 6 gold medals, when on previous games they have got 39, and it is only athletics left, when they are super strong at. It is either they get more gold next days when swimming is still on, or they wont win this Olympics.
They are usually kicking ass in swimming and unless I am not mistaken, they haven't won a single gold medal there at this Olympics and that is part of reason for fewer gold medals won.  Last Olympics Chinese almost beat them when it comes to gold and this time it may actually happen.

We have contraversial moment in boxing. Italian boxer Angela Carini abandoned fight with transgender Imane Khelif after 46 seconds:
I can't understand how transgener can fight with women, it's disgraceful.
Yep, fucking disgrace. The only way this is going to stop is if women refuse to fight the men but unfortunately I don't see it happening on the scale enough to actually matters. I hope that i am wrong though.

Being Croatian, I lost a few years of my life watching that match, especially during the tie break. At the beginning of the 3rd set, I was sure Donna was going to lose it (I even put some money on it), but luckily, she somehow managed to win. I just hope she has enough time to recover for the tonight's match vs Schmiedlova.
I can imagine that, I watched it as neutral spectator and even for me it was such nervous match. Vekic had such poor 1st serve and several double faults at desisive moments, it didn't looked that she will win.
We have huge upset in semifinal where Swiatek loss to Zheng, it was difficult to see it coming.

If I can recall correctly, they were celebrating together during 2016 Olympic Games as well so its safe to assume nothing is gonna happen to them. Unless some of those from North decide to defect to South Korea.  Tongue

I also don't believe that something bad will happen to them. After all, they won medal, I expect that they will be welcomed as heroes at home.

I don't think Paris is giving me any luck  Tongue
I've lost almost every bet so far

I'm not going to bet on Brazil's women's soccer anymore, I believed Brazil could win in women's soccer against Spain, they lost, but still managed to qualify for the quarterfinals
I think this is Brazil's worst team in recent times and I don't think they'll be able to beat France at home
Maybe my bet will have to be against Brazil hehehe

Brazil hasn't won a gold medal so far
I think the best chances now will be in surfing, beach volleyball and canoeing

Anyone following hockey at the Olympics? Germany and Great Britain are on top in Group A with 9 and 8 points respectively, while in Group B it is the turn of Belgium and Australia. Top 4 teams from each group are going to qualify for the knockout phase. India and Argentina have 7 points each in Group B, and if there are no surprises then they should qualify. Ireland and New Zealand are already eliminated from this group. In the women's competition, Belgium and Netherlands are topping Group A, while Australia and Argentina are in the same position in Group B.

Congratulations...
It's really a remarkable history, although this is the first time for me to see him, but when I check on his Instagram https://www.instagram.com/yusufdikecofficial/?locale=us&hl=am-et

He's joined shooting competition with this style in 2023, but not really sure why it was not viral like now.

Another one shooter that went viral is from Korea, her stance is really badass like a main character of movies or stories.

This picture is the one more popular in my local social media channel compared to the Turkey representative. His posture and chill vibes while holding pistol one handed is so bad ass.

They are even compared to the JJK(Jujutsu Kaisen) Popular characters since they resemble the aura and posture. Regardless both athletes is so cool to watch on this level high competitive games while they are just chillin like a boss. Bang bang. Haha.

Fun fact: He won silver medal though on that winning shot.

His attitude was very relaxed and he won the silver medal, that's why he became popular.
If the result had been negative, if he had not received a medal etc., he would have received serious criticism in Turkey.
Since the result was positive, he has now been declared a charismatic hero, but if it had been negative, he would have been lynched on social media saying, "Who would have chosen this man and disgraced us to the world?"
The reason it went viral is nothing more than the fact that it won a silver medal.

@TopTort77 - based on observation, the host country usually won a lot of medals and maybe some of them becoming the number one. So we shouldn't be surprised that France is taking a lot of golds right now.

I know that, but that is actually funny, because participating at home, and "knowing stadium, track and etc" only gives advantage in few disciplines. However judges still give a little extra attention and advantage to host country, even though they are international.

Has anyone heard any scandals? I havent googled it, but it is pretty much silence about it, except opening ceremony.

Damn, what an epic match between Kostyuk and Vekic, almost hours of fight and winner decided in tie-break. Vekic goes to semifinal where she will face biggest surprise of tournament Schmiedlova. In other semifinal Zheng will play with Swiatek.

Isn't it dangerous though for the North Korean team to posed with their South Korean compatriots? I mean we all know what North Korean government is, and most likely with the athletes associating themselves with the other side, they could be in serious trouble when they go back to North Korean or at least their families as well as the government might think that they are going to go on the other side, just saying.

Yes, and If I'm not mistaken, the North and South Koreans could have been playing under one banner during the 2016 or 2020 Olympics. So it's not that surprised to see the two having a selfie in this age and hopefully the North Koreans will not take his matter seriously to their athletes. And then know the consequences of defecting to the other side, their families are  going to suffer or maybe worst is death.

Yesterday Caio Bonfim from Brazil (the country where I live) won an unprecedented silver medal in race walking. He is in his fourth Olympics, a sign that perseverance can indeed bring results... A curious fact is that Caio is trained by his own mother Gianette Bonfim, 8 times Brazilian champion... and Gianette was trained by João Sena, her husband and Caio's father... the whole family trained themselves... nice, right?

Pure gangsta, if you asked me, Lol, this guys without ahead head gear or any special lens and yet he won the silver medal. Just imagine if he has that kind of gadgets that others have, he could have won the gold medal easy.

When I first saw this guy and this picture, I though that it was just a regular guy who was passing by shooting range. Just a guy who loves shooting after work from time to time. He simply changed his shirt to Turkish tshirt and decided to participate. This hand in the pocket shows that he wasnt hoping to get a high results, or indicates a huge professionalism. Most important, that this guy isnt young, his sight isnt perfect anymore, yet he manages to be very precise at shooting. Imagine him being younger, he would have taken gold easily.
