Spain had already guaranteed themselves a place in the quarter-finals. But on the other hand, they have now made life much more difficult for themselves, since they are drawn against France
Spain will face the winner of group D which is Japan, not France.
If Spain had qualified for the knockout stage as the winner of group C, it was possible that they face France in the semi-finals, but now they will face France only if both teams advance to the final.

Big surprise win for Egypt against Spain that was one of the main favorites of wining football Olympic tournament.
For that reason I am staying away from betting on Olympic football.

Olympic games have nothing to do with UEFA EURO. Even World Cup surprises could not be as random as the Olympic games.
I don't know if the conditions in Paris affected group games or not, otherwise players playing individual games made a lot of complaints about the food shortage, the condition of the bed...

Thank you Germany for not messing it up in the 2nd half.  Grin  I know it isn't big winnings but I really couldn't find other reliable bets so wanted to start with lower odds.

Germany really made me nervous by their 1st half performance. Brazil's series in the 2nd quarter was scary. But thankfully Germany played better during the rest of the game. It would be a pity if it turned into a game like the Japan - France one. I guess many people expected France to win easier than this. But they barely did it by OT. Anyway I can't wait for next games already.  Smiley

Big surprise win for Egypt against Spain that was one of the main favorites of wining football Olympic tournament.
Now Spain finished in second place of Group C and they are playing against winner of Group D  that is probably going to be Japan.
France is playing against Argentina and that looks like very interesting match.

On the one hand, there is nothing surprising about this, since before this game, Spain had already guaranteed themselves a place in the quarter-finals. But on the other hand, they have now made life much more difficult for themselves, since they are drawn against France, which simply destroyed its group, scoring 9 points with a goal difference of 7-0. Spain has a modest goal difference of 6-4, and it looks like they will be underdogs in the upcoming game.

India has won fewer medals than North Korea, Cuba or Azerbaijan...
And South Korea is way more successful than North Korea at the Olympics so we can't completely ignore money being a factor as well. There are exceptions though, but when you look at the list of the most successfull countries, they are mostly among the most developed ones. Unless they are using the sport for other means, like DDR once did. After all, George Orwell once said that "sport is war minus the shooting".  Tongue

France vs Japan basketball game was freaking amazing. It had me at the edge of my seat throughout the entire game. Was expecting Japan to end up winning, but they messed up so many times in OT.

Kawamura and Victor were epic throughout the game. France seriously deserved to go through to the next round though. Amazing match overall!

On the other side, Australia with a population of 2% of that of India managed to win a total of 46 medals during the last Olympics. That means that Australians are 350 times more likely than Indians to win medals at Olympics. Even Japan, considered as the most rapidly ageing nation in the world managed to win 58 medals last time.
Those two are among the most developed and richest coutnries in the world and to be really successfull in sports, you need infrastructure which equals to money.

It's not about the money it's more about a cultural thing, South and South East Asia are not that keen on sports, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Vietnam despite the population lack the results.

Swimming 100 Metre Freestyle semi-finals tonight with once again David Popovic being the favorite to qualify in final and to win it as well.

I wonder if he's going to pull another final few meters again, he did that in the previous final winning by a nail and now in the qualifying, he was again fourth or fourth of the last lap and managed to win the series.
Still don't get the point of 10 series for the 16 places, the guys from S2 were all almost 3 seconds than the S1, I know it's about competitions and stuff, but make another preliminary just for them and pick 8 of those.

Watching Anthony Edwards cheer on the table tennis players has been the unexpected clip of the Olympics so far for me. That boy is spending a whole lot of time around women’s table tennis players. I’m guessing there’s one he’s got his eye on. Strange because he was just posting pictures with his girlfriend and kid.

Yesterday he already won his first gold medal of Paris and I'm sure this kid will most likely win 100Metre final too because currently he is the faster swimmer in the world and just a quick reminder that he is still 19 years old which is scary to think what he can achieve until he is 30 years old.  Shocked  Cool

The skateboarding final was scintillating to say the least. Both the Japanese and Americans were on fire with Yuto Horigome nailing a 97 as his final trick and taking gold by the smallest of margins. Loved the event.

So what's the consensus then (if there is any)? What's the main reason why you win so few Olympic medals? Is it because, as a nation, you don't care much about sports in general (I don't know if that's true, just speculating), or maybe you're too focused on a few sports like cricket? Or is there something else causing it?
It's all about Cricket in India and there is very little focus on any other sport. Bad infrastructure, crazy corrupt politicians etc are few other reasons too.

A lot of discussion is going on in social media here in India. We are the most populous nation in the world, with 1.4 billion people. Last time we won a total of 7 medals (out of that only one was gold).

Turkish Women's Volleyball team defeated the Netherlands 3-2 yesterday and won their first match in the group.
They came from 2-0 down to win the match 3-2, I thought they would win more easily.
What makes you think so? IIRC on the world ranking they differs by 2 place, though I'm not sure if the team playing on the Olympics are the same as their usual national line-up or not[1]. According to the stats USA lost position recently so they're quite close if you look at the position on the ranking, granted their points difference are bigger. I guess performance of the day matters for those initial sets, while mental strength carries you when things get rough.

You may know that the Turkish Volleyball Team(Women) won the World Cup last year. In fact, we finished last year with 3 cups.

I am not happy with the game played yesterday, falling behind 2-0 against the Netherlands is a very bad situation.
There are 4 places between Turkey and the Netherlands in the world rankings.
This is what makes me think this way.

I have been having similar experiences and it making me feel like betting on the Olympics is literally a difficult way of gambling as I have no been lucky enough, i have not been able to win on a single bet win the Olympics did kicked off and I bet on their games. I will keep trying maybe I will get lucky before the Olympics comes to an end.

Sooner or later we'll win some bets hehehe
Good luck!

The best thing is to stay away from team sports that have their own major championships when playing at the Olympics, it's just not the same and the ods are reflecting more the usual team form ignoring most don't care that much about it or are already at the end of a long season and tired or injured as hell.
Go for individual sports where you have already seen the qualifying, in most of them surprises are lower than others for the returns they carry.

My next bet is on surfing, I'm very hopeful that Brazil will win the gold medal with Gabriel Medina
But I'll try to find some good bets. If you find a good risk/reward one, share it with us

Hope you're not planning on betting on Brazil against Spain in women football? Spain are the best women side currently the best side in women football. Spain, France, England, Germany, USA are the top 5 teams in women football. Brazil used to be good but not anymore. I don't see them winning against Spain. I don't even think Brazil will put up as much fight as Nigeria did.

For the Olympics I think I'm going to focus on Basketball. Basketball is relatively easier to predict than football. Aside the upset of Nigeria pulled against Australia, I don't think there have been any major shock so far.

To be honest, I'm thinking of betting on Brazil against Spain. The Brazilians will have to give it their all to qualify and I believe they have the potential to do so, after all qualification will be at stake and the odds are good  Cheesy

tennis at the Olympics has always made us laugh and let's face it it doesn't count for anything it's just to say I won the Olympics, there are other tournaments that count and it's certainly not that, just look at the best ones not even taking part, having said that Nadal was already cooked before that the match began so yes I was also happy that he came out and that Novak meets a stronger player

How do you say that tennis is not considered important in the Olympics? I agree that you cannot compare this to Wimbledon and any other grand slams but this does not mean that it is not important for the tennis player. A gold medal in the tennis Olympics always matter.

The match between Nadal and Djokovic was easily won by Djokovic. (6-1 and 6-4). I think the era for Nadal is over and it is not that he has lost his form but it is the age factor which becomes a drawback when he is facing opponents.

It seems to me that some branches are just included in the Olympics.
When it comes to Olympics, branches such as swimming, marathon, archery, weightlifting and wrestling come to the fore.
For example, football is world-class, but it is far behind in the Olympic Games.
Our friend may have wanted to mention this situation.

The only good part about the opening ceremony was the Parade Of Nations through the Seine river on boats. Apart from that the French authorities tried to push as much as political correctness and woke behavior down the throats of the audience as possible. Christians are offended after they distorted the last supper with a performance by LGBT people. I have watched Olympics opening ceremonies from several events in the past and this was the first time it got to such a gross and diabolique display.

Yes, it was terrible (by the way, that guy in the black suit and black shorts/underpants was flashing his genitals to the whole world! What kind of nonsense is that?), I wonder what percentage of French people (not by nationality, but by behavior model) were represented here? It seems to me not very large, since despite all the decline of culture, not everyone in France is a freak.
The question arises: can some new inhabitants (with a barbaric background) of France be blamed for not integrating into society, etc.? I would not want to integrate into such a society either.
This is by far the worst Olympics ever. It is as if the organizers wanted the Olympics to be a controversial one. Artistic or not, the ceremony was a perverted display. Don’t they know that children watch the Olympics. BTW I read YouTube removed the video as a lot of people found it offensive.

There are betters ways to represent the culture of a people without profanity. The London 2012 Olympics has one of the best opening ceremonies in its history. It was memorable for me and I loved it when they did the James Bond scene with the Queen. It was a clean and beautiful ceremony that set everyone up for a great Olympics. And that’s how the Olympics should be.

When I saw this opening I thought: what the hell is this? It's amazing the effort that some people make to destroy things, to transform an event that had everything to be incredible into the most complete bizarre. The craziest thing to think is that this was all planned, rehearsed months in advance and the highest authority of the Olympics approved an opening like this... what the hell do these guys have in their heads? Because a brain it certainly isn't.

You mean she got pregnant? During Olympics? Smiley

We couldn’t be more in lock step, I dig your vibe my friend.

And yes, it was me who did it w her too. Shhh, plz keep this quiet, no need for me to be apart of a national scandal, let alone a world wide one ffs.  Cheers Smiley

I love it, my man, 100% 100% Smiley I think in Sports we used to not give a shit a lot, everybody is playing and enjoying. Sometimes my sisters liked some cheerleading music, sometimes I prefer zero. But it's for everyone, I think people need to stop focusing on that and go back to the spirit of just enjoying sports.

Don't worry I tell nobody, but can you tell me how I can also have children, I would like to learn volleyball Smiley Smiley

Era of Nadal and to some extend, Roger Federer and Andy Murray was over like 2-3 years ago. Murray try to make a comeback from his injuries but was out already. Federer try to continue but his body is telling him differently and so he retired as well. Nadal try to stretch in 2022-2023, but it was not meant to be. The good news is that he had a youngers in Alcaraz to continue the tennis for Spain.

Only Djokovic is the last remaining of the OG's and still maintaining his position although there are a lot of young players trying to get close to him. But I do agree why the posters say that tennis is not important.

Maybe he can go and visit the Tennis League All Thread.

Two veterans met at the Olympic Games (they are now considered veterans in my eyes due to their age)
Novak defeated his rival Nadal 2-0 and continued on his way to the Olympic games.
Rafael could not show his presence in the first set and the first set ended 6-1. Although he showed a little more resistance in the second set, he lost this set 6-4 and bid farewell to the games.
Nadal may now have to quit tennis gradually. Because it seems very difficult for young people to resist.
If I am not mistaken Nadal has already stated that he will retire soon, as it is clear that even if the mindset of a winner is still there and he may still want to play, his body does not respond as it used to do so and it shows.

So in a way I am happy that it was Djokovic the one that eliminated him at the end, as it would have been sad to see Nadal being eliminated from the olympic games by a lesser player than him.

Injuries affected Nadal very much and when he came back after serious injuries, Hüyük achieved success.
Now his body has aged and he does not have the same performance as before.
Tennis is not an easy sport on an individual level. Sometimes the match lasts 4-5 hours and it is not easy at all as you get older.
He made his name written in golden letters in the tennis world and that too has come to an end.

If I'm not mistaken he is retired already, and as you have said, it's the wear and tear that took effect on his body and for sure he isn't expecting any out of this Olympics, but still he can represent his beloved country of Spain for the last time and as he Alcaraz to pass the torch.

Japan winning gold in gymnastics, it was very close competition against the Chinese. And for all the hype of it, Japan's Yuto Horigome has won the men’s street skateboarding. So they lead with 6 gold now, host country France with 5 golds. USA at 6th position, but there are a lot of games in the next couple of days that they can snatch some gold medals to improved their standing.
