also, If the US fails to take the gold in basketball I am certain a lot of people will troll the NBA and its fans.
I don't think professionals should think about trolls or memes too hard. Everyone likes to watch the favorites fail, regardless of the sport and competition. I'm pretty sure there are some circlejerk subs somewhere making fun of some athletes somewhere. Taking them seriously would only drain your energy. That being said, I'm pretty sure every team have their own target and it's no surprise if the US wants to win the gold medal.

Can't wait for the basketball tournament.
Recently I watch Franc beating Turkey by 50 points, and Wembanyama only played like 20 minutes.

Sure team USA looks unbeatable with all their stars but a French team, on a good day for them, might pull up a huge upset if they face and beat them, it would be hilarious.
Everybody in the US expects this team to dominate and demolish every opponent by 30 point. Guess we will see if that's true.
I can't help but think if the US basketball team will go all out on this because I remember a US athlete calling out the NBA champions and its fans for calling the NBA champions "world champions" and I remember a lot of(maybe some) NBA players getting heated up because of it. also, If the US fails to take the gold in basketball I am certain a lot of people will troll the NBA and its fans.
For sure, they've sent the best right now, Lebron, Steph to lead the USA for a gold medal. However, there are a lot of great teams as well, having NBA players in team. However, if the US has all NBA players and some teams have like 2-5 players the most, then the current US team should be the favorite no matter what. They could have a lot of pressures though in their shoulders right now, but I do think that they will prevail, but not going to be very easy for them.

Oh and I remember that US athlete that you are referring, and it's Noah Lyles,

Yes, USA has started their training camp already. But we have Greece with Giannis and then the French Team, Wemby and Gobert  who are also present so the Basketball event is going to be one of the best watch. And 12 nations are expecting to be locked already,

But I'm sure no matter what, the USA team will still be the favorite here, no matter what other countries will do. They could have former and current NBA players, but the roster that the US is sending is the best they got right now.

This is going to be one of those years I'm going to give some good amount of attention to the Olympics because I have in past years given only but few attention to it reasons been that I don't find it very captivating for me, I know it is for many others but hasn't been for me in a very long while but in this year I'm going to see what will be made of my favorite sports and see how it feels like in the Olympics, further point of interest is in the fact that it will be held in France, one of the most popular country in the world.

For football players, it's going to be a really hectic year for them because they will be participating in too many competitions already and that for them will be a whole lot of stress,  from the Euro 2024 to the Olympics and back to club league games, I can only imagine.

I think the Olympics should be equally praised like the football and cricket events. Many players are not popular enough due to this. Competing with 100 players and winning gold requires a next-level skillset; hence, I think the Olympic events need to be applauded. Moreover, OP, I don’t think covering the games will be possible, as simultaneously there will be many games taking place. Hence, it will be ideal to cover only games with unique and valuable records. I like the swimming and high jump events in the Olympics. Let’s see if any new records are made or not.

I think it's been applauded around the world, in my opinion. There are great athletes that has come up of it, like Michael Phelps, Usain Bolt and others. Even pro athletes in basketball and tennis has been in the Olympics, but it's a totally different ball game for them as they represent their country, their flag that's why this is really something special for them to win Gold even if they are already a pro-athlete.

Yeah, athletic events are one of the centerpiece at the Olympics and in the women's category as well, competition are tough and the USA and team Jamaica has been fighting it out for supremacy.

I haven't made any bet on any Olympics games. I prefer the entertainment that comes from watching the games. My favourite games are the track and field event and swimming. The football matches are not as interesting as championships that are exclusively for football games. Hey notblox1, which are your favourite games and what is your predictions? Do you usually bet on Olympic games?
Same here, this year may be my first time placing a bet on Olympics event, that is if I see some consistency in any of the player or team. Olympics are actually difficult to predict because of there is rarely any data to use as reference.

My best should swimming and the variations of it. I also love Tenis and relay including other forms of racing. I will be looking out for opportunities to profit from the competition this time.

This topic will be used for posting predictions, news and for talking everything about Summer Olympics.

Just saw it, great idea notblox1 Smiley

I'm more focused in the UEFA Euro 2024 (Spain vs. Germany is starting right now!!) and San Fermín, which starts this Sunday, so I haven't paid much attention to the Summer Olympics yet, but I think this is going to be my reference site to discuss the topic Wink

I always enjoy the athletics, it’s probably my favourite thing to watch at the Olympics.

There is so much to watch though, I usually have it on the TV in the background, regardless of what sport is on. There isn’t much I really can’t watch.

Any particular event you like in athletics? I ask that because most people I speak to only watch the 100m and 200m and disregard the dozens of other events.

This will be the first Olympics that I actually bet on so interested to see how I go.

I thought I'd bump this thread since it's July now and there are 21 days left before the opening ceremony for the Olympics starts and the summer Olympics begins.

also, I just want to bring up the case about the Seine River that was planned to be used for the Olympics, what do you guys think about it, the french government says that the river is perfectly safe(I even see a news saying that Marcon, the french president plans to swim on the river to show that it is safe to be used.) to be used by the athletes, but tests show that the water quality in the river is still unsafe. I also saw an article where French citizens are threatening to poop on the river as a protest because of the large amount of money being used to clean the river.

Team US mens basketaball is a nice topic of discussion. Team US get gold medals, because they have best players from NBA. But in NBA, there are not only US players in team rosters. We can look on the NHL and suppose that team US should be taking gold medals all the time. But the last time team US got Olympic gold medals in ice hockey was in 1980. And not every year we seem them getting any medals.

If break dancing became an Olympic sports , why are not Esports there ? they have much more influence on people , they attract way more viewers and the young generation simply loves to watch some CounterStrike, Dota2 , League of Legends and other esports games so I think some sports deserve a chance to shine at Olympics. Overall , break-dancing competition will be wild and I'm sure they will put up a show to remember.
I don't think it is about influence or if it will attract more viewers, I am not really sure if the ICC is the one who said it or not but from what I remember one of the talking points that is being made about why Esports should not be in the Olympics is that it is not a physical sport(not as physical as all the sports currently available in the Olympics), also, I think they have the same sentiment as to why chess is not in the Olympics.

Yes, it's more likely that Esports is not physical enough for them to be considered as a sports, so no dice for them and sorry for those fan based here. Maybe you mean IOC though International Olympic Committee, instead of ICC.

Let's see how break dancing will be, for sure with so many youth into it, might be one of the most anticipated enough, together with the Mens Basketball as US is sending the best NBA players they got, and then track and field.

Do I get it correct? The number next to sport means number of medal sets to be distributed? I look at swimming, remember Michael Phelps and his 8 gold medals in Beijing. Imho this is unfair towards total standing in table. Some countries get 8 medals in 8 different sports, then one guy came and make 8 medals in swimming only. Either Olympic Games must add new sports, or decrease swimming styles and distances. Freestyle - 6 different distances + team relay. Invest money in one guy, train him and become one of most successful teams in Olympics. Seems unfair.
What do you mean? Yes there are countries that might struggle to win a single medal in an Olympics, but you can't blame it on Michael Phelps. It's that it just shows that there are still disparity even in sports. Top tier countries against those who struggled, but still this is sports and we can't do anything about it as they are considered "fair". They have the facilities and training equipment to be on top of the game, but there are others too who can pull an upsets and there are swimmers who beat Michael Phelps or even the most decorated Olympics medalist.

I am not blaming Phelps directly, I am blaming amount of disciplines. If a country wants to be on top in overall medal ranking, they dont have to invest in training many athletes. All they can do is to train swimmers. You can basically train one or two guys and get 5-10 gold medals. Even athletics is way more various. Not the same person participates in sprint race, 110m hurdles, 1500m and wins all the medals.
It might work, but the thing is that it's really hard to compete with countries like US or China because of the advancement of technology in swimming or even their swimming suits. If I'm not mistaken, swim suits developed by Speedo was banned by the Olympics because of the design that it can make the swimmer go faster. So just imagine a 3rd world nation who hasn't won a medal just focusing on 1 or 2 of their athletes to train and then put a lot of money in it but still can't make it to the podium because 1st world countries are ahead of the game. And when they thought that their athletes have done enough, suddenly a new technology was developed and push the envelope of their athletes to win more golds and break records.

Why I jumped on swimming if because of one single reason. One guy can get to many medals. When I look at the ranking and number of medals received by the end of the games I see something like this (random numbers):

Team USA - 200 athletes - 30 gold medals
Team China - 300 athletes - 25 gold medals
Team Germany - 150 athletes - 20 gold medals.

And among those 30 gold medals, 8 were one by one guy in swimming. That swimming thing changes overall ranking greatly. It is prestigious to win Olympic games. Athletes compete for days, then swimming starts and the country who has got 1 best swimmer takes the lead in overall ranking.

I assume the Russian federation won't be participating in this Olympics because what is going on in the War between them and Ukraine, though.
-cut-
Nope, they won't be participating, which cool in my book, but for some reason Israel can even with ICC arrest warrant for their president.

Break dancing is a sports now? I'm not really buying that is a sport but I guess when there's a competition and it involves the kinetics of the human body, I guess I'll try to understand why it's considered as a sport. Now, you got me curious about this one because I really want to see this one, would there be like some kind of production that will accompany the breakdancing act because that would be really awesome and it will probably make the Olympics a bit more colorful than usual. Who will be competing on the track and field? Is there a roster of the players that would participate? Also, would North Korea participate in the games too?
I totally understand why breakdancing is a sport there. Olympics is all about media and optics, and promoting healthy, drug free lifestyle (i am ignoring the doping for this).

And showing athlete people in slow mo is part of it and it looks really cool what they can do. Imho all sorts of dances and body control artforms should be in there, especially something like parkour, which is like watching jackie chan movies, if done well.

And health / social aspect of it is cool as well, as some young people might see old sports as uncool, especially, if they were bullied in school by athletes.
So they never get to sports and might start to hate it, but seeing something different, that looks cool, might help these young people to start moving more. Which helps with them by keeping up both physical and mental health. I don't really see anything negative in that.
