With 2 new medals in Tennis today, Croatia has already matched their 2nd best Olympic result - winning 6 medals (also 3 golden) in London. With a few more athletes that are favorites for the medal remaining in the competition, we might even match our Rio result - 10 medals in total.

We only sent 59 athletes to these games so this is a tremendous result. Just for comparison - we had 87 in Rio and 110 in London.

We are currently 13th overall, which is truly an amazing achievement.

I am amused by the situation in biathlon - as far as I know, most Norwegian biathletes suffer from asthma, so they completely legally use drugs that are prohibited for other biathletes (healthy) and are considered doping.

Nice one. I remember how these asthmatics beat everyone. Funny how to see that only asthmatics from Norwegian team got medals (not only in biathlon), while others don't. Magical asthma.

I found a scientific article that presents a study and explanation for this situation, not only in Norwegian athletes, but also in other athletes.

Now the question comes, how can you ban one athlete for a certain drug, and allow the other to use it. These "exemptions" doesn't make any sense for me.

The answer is simply and obvious, current sport is all about politics and is a challenge not between athletes, but between pharmaceutical companies.

This permission for one to use drugs and prohibition to use it for other makes me to start thinking about participating in next Olympics. I'm weak, not sporty, probably don't have perfect sight, lack of stamina. But, I think I'm gonna ask my doc and coach for "special pills", as I want to be "Citius - Altius - Fortius" and get gold medal. To bad I leave in small, poor country, that will never support my dream.

Yes, this is a monstrously unfair topic, and it is the basis for a lot of controversy and hatred. Obviously, many drugs that are banned for some athletes but allowed for others provide a significant advantage, but the sports community considers this to be normal. I am amused by the situation in biathlon - as far as I know, most Norwegian biathletes suffer from asthma, so they completely legally use drugs that are prohibited for other biathletes (healthy) and are considered doping.

In the case of Simone Biles, she got an exemption to use Ritalin (Methylphenidate). The justification being given was that this drug is needed for the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). And the controversy started because as per the rules of World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), Methylphenidate is a banned substance because it is being widely used as a performance enhancer. At least one Russian athlete has received a ban, for using Methylphenidate. Now the question comes, how can you ban one athlete for a certain drug, and allow the other to use it. Yes, this is an absurd situation. The funny thing is that many athletes regularly use illegal drugs throughout their careers and this information is confidential. We learn about such facts from the results of various leaks - journalistic investigations, hacker attacks, etc. So those who admit this state of affairs are well aware that it is something dirty and try not to advertise it.

By the way, is it only the gold medals that decide the country who wins Olympics?

Not exactly! In fact, there is no country that wins the Olympics.

But, the table is organized based on the gold medals, as they are the most important.

Yes, US has a history of harvesting golds in the short distances, the only competition they have in both mens and womens are the Jamaican runners, but it seems that Great Britain is good as well in this current Olympics.

It's going to be close for the US, but yeah, possible that they can land on the Top 3 and wouldn't be surprised if they will have a final push in the medal standing as more sports discipline will be favourable to them before the end of the Olympics.

Very many medals the day before yesterday in the total count tally but I think winning silvers and bronzes really hurt them as US still have the most medals but not the most gold,,,  mean right now they have 9 more silvers than China, so very close calls for sure.

By the way, is it only the gold medals that decide the country who wins Olympics?

But that's the point! Because it was not authorized, she had to stop taking this medication a few weeks before the games. Result? She ended up being psychologically affected to the point that she abandoned the competition. There was no favoritism here. The drug was not authorized, she stopped taking it despite the consequences.

EDIT:
The US are even being very strict, because they don't want to spend another shame like what happened to Lance Armstrong. They banned one of their best athletes from participating in the games, just because about she took cannabis.

Biles finished her performance at this Olympiad. As far as I know, she has permission to use illegal drugs because of her chronic diseases, but due to regulatory problems she was unable to import these drugs into Japan (where they are considered drugs and are prohibited), so her illnesses worsened and knocked her out of her usual states.

That is the thing that I can never understand. How can this be allowed? While some athletes are either banned from participating or their medals are taken away after the Olympics due to doping - or as I understand "illegal drug". Others are allowed to use illegal drugs.

For me it is simple - cant participate like others, don't participate.

If it is allowed to use illegal drugs for athletes with chronic diseases, why not then allowed athlete with one leg to use scooter in speed walking ? That will be fair.

I am struck by the debut of Nigara Shaheen, who made her debut at the Olympic games, making it clear that women's rights must be fulfilled, especially for those countries as radical as Pakistan, Afghanistan, among others:

Quote
Her attempts to effect change and inspire others has brought criticism, bullying, and even threats on her life.

"I’ve been harassed and bullied a lot," Shaheen told Al Jazeera  just before Tokyo 2020.

"In Peshawar and Kabul, we were scared and worried for our security. I’ve been targeted and received God knows how many threats on social media. There are Facebook pages created in my name posting stuff about me."

"It’s been hard. But all those things have made me stronger. It was rough but if it wasn’t for all those things, I wouldn’t be where I am today."

I think that this type of treatment of women should not happen, much less receive threats, it is sad that even in the world there are still cultures where they try to denigrate women.

I think this information is poorly explained! What she takes are not illegal drugs!

She takes medications for depression that are not allowed to be taken during the Olympic competitions. They are legal medicines, but not authorized in the Olympic Games. Just like other medicines, which are used for example for colds.

I don't know what happened exactly, but Simone Biles withdrew from the competition after the first round and it cost them the gold medal (according to the betting odds, US was far ahead of the other teams, but in the end the Russians managed to win gold). I am not sure whether she will be able to participate in the remaining disciplines (today is the gold medal event for women's artistic individual all-around in artistic gymnastics). I checked the schedule and it looks like Biles will not be taking part. For the US, the two athletes who are being shortlisted are Sunisa Lee and Jade Carey.

For now the USA has had problems with the women's team, because the problem of the gymnast number 1 of them withdrew due to mental health problems, the truth is something strong, but I hope that she recovers very soon.

Just watched the mens 800m swim final.  What a race.  US Fink was in 5th place on the 750m turn and sprinted faster than I've ever seen to get the gold.  That was the most amazing last 50m of a race I've seen.  He had no business winning that race.  Those are the best events in the Olympics when the *amazing* happens

It seems that these Olympics are not going better for the United States.
At the moment, he is third in the gold medals. Will athletics events, will they win more gold medals? We cannot forget that in these tests, athletes from African countries are also very good.

It is always the same thing when summer games start.
USA is not so strong in "random sports".

When the athletics game will start they will win a lot more medals, it is their main game and they will dominate there.

Wow I hope so, because in Freestyle Swimming the Great Britain lost and won in the relay. But for the women they are doing well, the women have already won in 3x3 basketball:

I have no doubts that USA will end in TOP 3 in medals table. And athletics events will bring some medals for them.
In athletics, Africans is mainly dominating in running long distances and marathon, but it's only small part of events. Short distances (100, 200, 400 or 800 metres), hurdles, jumping, hepathlon, throwing events and so on - there is many disciplines were USA is good.

of course, they will. the Olympics is will last for 16 days. the US sent over 600 athletes to the Tokyo Olympics. it is safe to say they will win more gold as the Olympics progress and will most likely stay on the top 3 at the end of the Olympics, which always has been since the Olympics started in 1896(except for 1980 when they boycotted the Olympics [source]).
