Historic indeed! Will he be the next Usain Bolt in the making?
Very interesting to follow his journey after this Olympics.
For sure, brands and other endorsements will go after him when he gets home.
Just like Hidilyn Diaz of the Philippines, she gets a lot of money, real estate, endorsements and others from private companies.
More than what the government's prize for Olympics gold medal.

I would like to congratulate Lamont Marcell Jacobs for winning the 100-meter race, but he has a long way to go before being able to be compared with a legend such as Usain Bolt. Bolt won a total of 8 gold medals in the Olympic games (from 2008 to 2016). On top of that, he won 11 gold medals in IAAF World Athletics Championships (2007 to 2017). I don't want to insult Jacobs, but he is no way near Bolt in terms of achievements. But given his stellar performance yesterday, I have high hopes on him.

It was a historic day for Italy and probably perhaps the most exciting day at the summer games ever.
For the first time in history, an Italian reached the final in the hundred meters and even won the race by setting the Italian and European all-time record twice.
But not only this twenty minutes before another Italian managed to win the gold medal in the high jump.
Italians probably remembered this day even in a hundred years.

It is true! The two athletes are to be congratulated!

I had the opportunity to see both competitions live on TV and they were simply fantastic.
Especially the high jump athlete was extremely emotional, crying on the floor for 3 or 4 minutes.  Cheesy

Yes, this is an absurd situation. The funny thing is that many athletes regularly use illegal drugs throughout their careers and this information is confidential. We learn about such facts from the results of various leaks - journalistic investigations, hacker attacks, etc. So those who admit this state of affairs are well aware that it is something dirty and try not to advertise it.

Absolutely correct. I don't understand the point in keeping this information confidential. WADA claims that since medical reports are personal, they can't be put in to public domain. But those who are competing along with these athletes need to know how much advantage their counterparts receive from these medications. Also, is it fair to allow such exemptions? If a drug is proven to be a performance enhancer, it should be banned completely. Now don't tell me that there is no alternative for Ritalin. The last time I checked, it was not even the first preference for treating ADHD.

@Sithara007 I don’t like how WADA operates and it’s a shame they’re yet unchallenged, and I don’t expect the situation to improve till WADA becomes more transparent. Furthermore for every drug on the market there is a alternative, but these athletes know taking those won’t enhance their performances, hence they ignore those alternatives therefore I don’t support these kind of exemptions because they’re unfair.

of course they are unfair and most people know they are unfair. The whole thing is
so shady, When I see athletes winning I immediately think what drugs they are taking.

If Asthmatics for example are winning so much they are obviously getting an unfair
advantage. Normally medicated Asthmatics would perform similar to healthy
opponents but over medicated healthy athletes obviously have a massive advantage.

I say legalise it for all and let the athletes take the risk of over medicating and damaging
their bodies, let them weigh up the risks against winning a Gold medal.

One thing that I have noticed so far is that unlike what was said before, the United States doesn't seems to be having a monopoly in track and field. They performed well in swimming and some of the other disciplines, but so far their performance in athletics seems to be disappointing.
The monopoly on track and field was taken over by Jamaica sprint starts when they started to keep their talents in their shores, earlier if you check the past Olympic sprint champions majority were from Jamaica but relocated to Canada or US because of scholarships and actually what happened was they used to have scouts to recruit the best talents in Jamaica and once that is over they are dominating that.

I won't be surprised if they finish far below their tally in 2016 (46 golds). On the other hand, the Chinese athletes seems to be on fire. Back in 2016, they won a total of 26 golds. And till now, their tally stands at 23 gold medals (with half the medal events still to go).
China is grooming players especially for Olympics from an young age from the early 2000s and it is not a big surprise that they are catching up and dominating the medal tally.

Today a Portuguese athlete wins another silver medal, Patricia Mamona in Women's Triple Jump.  Cheesy

Looking at the medals table, the US managed to move to second place, but Chian already has an advance of 4 gold medals.
And we continue to see US players failing to achieve the goals that all the bookmakers indicated.

Yes, it greatly affects the result. I remember the 2008 Beijing Olympics when China won a fantastic 51 gold medals and took first place overall. Interestingly, at the next Olympics in 2012, they won only 38 gold medals and took second place behind the USA. I don't think Japan will be able to compete for the top 2, but the top 3 is quite capable (especially considering some of the problems of competing teams).

I continue to wonder what a great advantage (or rather an impetus to the development of local sports) the host country of the Olympics gets. In the 16th year, Japan won 12 gold medals, and this year, when half of the competitions are ahead, it already has 17 gold medals. It will be very cool if Japan can stay in the top three teams in the overall medal standings.

Hosting nation always get some amount of advantage. They can add a certain number of additional sports and usually gets the right to send more athletes and automatic qualification in some cases (with team sports). But right now, Japan has slipped to the 3rd position. China is at the top with 22 golds and the United States is at second position with 19. Japan has 17 golds till now. I guess US will close the gap with China in the coming days, as track and field disciplines have started. Still it is difficult to predict who will remain on top.

By the way, is it only the gold medals that decide the country who wins Olympics?

Not exactly! In fact, there is no country that wins the Olympics.

But, the table is organized based on the gold medals, as they are the most important.

Oh I see,,, I did not realize this I thought there was like a big winner every Olympics but you are right I looked in news for the past and this is all just team/individual contests with no country grand prize winner he:)

US still lagging behind and still having the most silver!

Yes. The Olympics so far have produced a number of surprises and upsets that no one could have predicted. Perhaps the biggest shock was Novak Djokovic's loss to Alexander Zverev.
Furthermore, congratulations to Croatia on the all-Croatian grand final in men’s doubles tennis competition.

He has been trying for a few years to win gold in the Olympic games, but he still hasn't.
He will certainly try again at the Paris 2024 games. But, as the players go by, it becomes more difficult, because younger players with quality start to show up.

I'm not really sure if Djokovic can still compete in the next 4 years in the Olympics. Tennis is such a brutal sports I would say and it will really put a lot of wear and tear in your body. He had like an injury 2 years ago and then come back strong. But he is already 34 years old and be 38 by the time of the next Olympics. And there are a lot of things that can happen in the next 4 years if he continues to chase the record of Federer, which likely he can break. His bid for the golden slam has ended with this lost to Zverev though.

Huge result this year on the olympic games from Croatia. Was expect 1 medal from Metkic and Pavic but wasnt expecting an all croatian final . What a result from them. Djokovic could have bringed 2 gold medals to Serbia in tennis but is fighting for 2 Bronze medals in the end

The Best Tipster on the Forum!!
With 2 new medals in Tennis today, Croatia has already matched their 2nd best Olympic result - winning 6 medals (also 3 golden) in London. With a few more athletes that are favorites for the medal remaining in the competition, we might even match our Rio result - 10 medals in total.

We only sent 59 athletes to these games so this is a tremendous result. Just for comparison - we had 87 in Rio and 110 in London.

We are currently 13th overall, which is truly an amazing achievement.

Hello guys,

If they watched the women's soccer game? The Canadian girls eliminated the favorite team to win the gold, Brazil, it was really exciting after the penalty kicks.

In BMX, the tri-Olympic champion, the Colombian, was in 2nd place, not bad for having participated with ailments in her knee, what strikes me the most is that China is leading the Olympic medal table and the USA is in 3rd place, still There are many games left, it is likely that we will see a very fought Olympiad by these powers countries in sports.

It is also necessary to highlight that the Venezuelan arrived with everything eager to take the gold, she is already classified for the final:

Yulimar Rojas: "I've always dreamt about winning Olympic gold. It's something that I wish and yearn for."

Quote
Do you feel pressure knowing that people consider you to be the favourite?

Sometimes I don’t believe it. I feel like I’m a normal girl, like everyone else, with her goals, her dreams, and I try not to burden myself with thoughts that could make me anxious. I am very grateful to all those who trust me, and I hope I don't disappoint them.

I think that above all, I highlight the humility that the athlete shows, despite all the efforts she could not go to the opening of the Olympics, her biggest contender is the Colombian, both friends and rivals, this is the beauty of the Olympics, the great show they give, where you can make many friends.

I found a scientific article that presents a study and explanation for this situation, not only in Norwegian athletes, but also in other athletes.
https://www.researchgate.net/publication/12621710_Asthma_and_wheezing_among_Norwegian_elite_athletes

Quote
These results indicate that asthma is more common among athletes compared with the general population.

Why am I not surprised  Roll Eyes
And despite the fact that there are some explanations that justify this imbalance by something other than gaining an advantage over other athletes, the fact remains: the legal use of doping by some athletes and the prohibition of this doping for others create an obvious imbalance.

By the way, in my opinion, the study was carried out fundamentally incorrectly, since in addition to general indicators, it is necessary to consider their distribution in separate groups - for example (as I assume) the number of asthmatics in the top 10 will significantly exceed the number of asthmatics in the total number of athletes.
