It will be interesting to track which country will eventually win, of course the 1st criteria is always the number of gold and not total medals.

I have to say I'm mostly impressed with Netherlands, they are a really small country and will probably end in top 10 countries with over 30 medals collected. They also do not have some highlighted individuals that collected 5+ medals, it was a team effort which is even more impressive.

Individually speaking, Caeleb Dressel is following into Phelps's steps. Still has a long way to go though.

I see that today the difference between China and the United States has reduced to 5 gold medals. In silver and bronze medals, the United States is undeniably in the lead. I think that it will be very difficult for China to keep the first place, in the last couple of days their pace has decreased significantly.

US has not been performing to expectations but still a lot more days to the tournament. I think for some reason a lot of countries are motivated to beat China,,, or at least this is what I can tell from a lot of posts on social media I am sure you have seen also. I mean I get it China is not popular these days but nothing to do with the athletes.

4 more medals to catch up but China also can win more.

Gap now reduced to 4 medals. Just two days remain and I don't really think that enough items remain now for US to overtake China. A number of star US athletes failed to win gold medals, especially in gymnastics as well as track and field. Any chance of the United States topping the medals table evaporated at that point. Tomorrow we have the gold medal match in basketball and a few other items. US may end up somewhere around 35 golds and China may end up slightly ahead of them.

It depends to a large extent on the schedule. Different nations do better in different sports, and the Olympics has a huge range of different sports. One example is that the US do much better than China in athletics, which comes later in the schedule. In order to predict with any degree of accuracy which nation will finish on top, the first consideration is which events have already finished, and which are still in progress and yet to award a medal.

The problem for the US this year is that even in athletics they haven't been successful.
Some people have already started to complain the way of selecting the athletes who will represent the US, as they left out some athletes who were very promising.

@joker_josue Didn't know that happened in the US, I mean, anyone just going online to check would see every other person/media uses a Gold medal tally (though I actually always assumed for some reason a points tally was used as well, didn't know it was just gold that counted).

It's not just the gold medals that count. The official medal table is organized by the delegation that has the most gold medals. In case of a tie, the one with the most silver. And then the one with the most bronze. And finally, the total of the medals is counted.

For example: Imagine that a country has only 5 gold medals (first place). And another country only has 10 silver medals (second place). The table will list the country with 5 medals in first place.

Nice win for India in hockey... the sport was big for Southeast Asia too around the same period, and still is a favourite for women's especially but yeah once the superior physiques of other nations started taking interest, it became difficult. Not that it's a good excuse of course.

I just read that some newspapers and tv-stations in the United States like the New York Times, NBC and The Washington Post are using a different medal table now where the total count of all medals matters to determine the place in the medal table and not the number of gold medals. It's not a big surprise that the United States are on position 1 in their "own" tables. In my opinion that is a pretty ridiculous and shady move to adjust the numbers in a way that your nation is on top. The normal and traditional way to rank the nations on the medal table that is also used officially by the IOC was always to count which nation has the most gold medals. The US media in question were also criticised on the internet for using their own medal table.

No more! The official table counts!
If not, each country started to make a table to suit their country.

But even looking at the total of medals, they should feel uncomfortable, as by this time of the games, they must have already had almost 100 or more medals. So this year has been a real disaster for US athletes.

Finally Indian men's hockey team had won the bronze medal defeating Germany 5-4. This medal is won by India after a 41 years wait. Hockey being the national game of India is under big expectation on every Olympics. Finally this time something good had happened winning bronze targeting for gold.

Until 1968, the gold medal in field hockey was always won by either India or Pakistan. But then the European nations started giving more attention to hockey and in 1972 India was relegated to the 3rd position (FRG won the gold medal). They won the gold medal in 1980, but that edition was boycotted by most of the western nations. And since 1980, it was a long wait until 2021.

There is another chance for a bronze medal for India, when the women's team takes on Great Britain tomorrow. India has never won a medal in women's field hockey ever since it was included in the Olympics (1980). Great Britain is ranked 4th as per the FIH rankings, while India is at the 7th position.

Incredibly, China already has an advance of 7 gold medals (32 medals) compared to the USA with only 25.
You can say that the US has more medals in total. But who likes to be first in second place?
Honestly, I think there were few bets that at this stage of the Olympic games, the US would not have first place in the gold medals.

Gold medal is more important than total medals, that's why they list it like that. Both countries performances are incredible, you can also count Japan to these. Although they have almost half of total medals they are superior in gold medals and earn this place as a host country. I don't think this list would change much, China probably finish at the top and USA and Japan will follow. Fourth place could change though, Great Britain, Australia and Russian Olympic Committee are too close to each other. Some countries performances are really disappointing, we can talk about that more detailed at the end of Olympics.

Pedro Pichardo wins gold in the men's triple jump for Portugal!
It was only about 10 centimeters to break the Olympic record.
It was thus another medal for Portugal.  Cheesy

I personally thought bookmaker odds were wrong to put china more than 4 or 5x. China gets stronger every competition and population wise they just have more people to choose from and talents to get born. I think it also helped a lot that Russia was not allowed to play (ROC is not as huge a contingent if Russia itself was allowed to play).

Well done to them, minus politics:)

another chance for the Philippines to snatch gold for its second gold. Oleksandr Khyzhniak and Eumir Marcial will have their match for the Olympic gold today. can't wait to watch their fight. both boxers have a powerful punch at their disposal making this fight worth getting excited about. also, basing on the odd I recently saw on stake.com it seems that Eumir Marcial is the underdog in the fight.

It is the semi-final match. Even if Marcial wins, he needs to win another match in order to win gold. And Oleksandr Khyzhniak was in terrific form during te quarterfinal match against Euri Cedeno Martinez. He just destroyed his opponent. The other semi-final is between Hebert Conceição of Brazil and Gleb Bakshi of Russia. If Marcial manages to qualify for the final, then he will meet one of these two in the fight for gold. Both the semi-finals are scheduled for today, while the final will be played on 7th August.

Marcial will have to win here if he wanted to advance for the gold medal. I haven't check stake odds, but if he is the underdog then it might be good for him and for us who loves to put our money on the underdog. But he is facing a very tough opponent here. Oleksandr Khyzhniak is also being trained by his training, so there is the bonding factor and Kazakhs has a history of good Olympic boxers. But I do hope that Marcial can win here, as he knock out his previous opponents and maybe he can do the same against Khyzhniak.
I forgot this match was for a semi-final, my bad. I got so excited for this fight that I forgot that his last match was for the quarter-finals. thanks for clearing it up.

anyway, the current odd for Eumir Marcial is x6.50 while for Oleksandr Khyzhniak is x1.45

That's a huge gap for Marcial, so I think Khyzhniak is the more accomplished and experienced boxer here. Although Marcial has captured medals outside of the Olympics and might have face other tough opponents in the past, and Khyzhniak is 1-0 against Marcial. So head to head Khyzhniak has the advantage. But this is a different version of Marcial as he has improved after that lost specially the right hand which is a heavy handed. But he needs to jab first and set up that right hand to shock Khyzhniak here. Goodluck to Marcial and hopefully he can go and advances for the finals.

Gold medal is more important than total medals,

Absolutly.
In the recent history I think only 1 time the USA has lost versus anyone and if I'm not mistaken was versus China, maybe Beinjin 2008?
It will be a huge loss for them if they will lose again since we all know the USA wants to be the 1st in everything every time.

This is not only a game but political status too.
