Incredibly, China already has an advance of 7 gold medals (32 medals) compared to the USA with only 25.
You can say that the US has more medals in total. But who likes to be first in second place?
Honestly, I think there were few bets that at this stage of the Olympic games, the US would not have first place in the gold medals.

Gold medal is more important than total medals, that's why they list it like that. Both countries performances are incredible, you can also count Japan to these. Although they have almost half of total medals they are superior in gold medals and earn this place as a host country. I don't think this list would change much, China probably finish at the top and USA and Japan will follow. Fourth place could change though, Great Britain, Australia and Russian Olympic Committee are too close to each other. Some countries performances are really disappointing, we can talk about that more detailed at the end of Olympics.

The confrontation between these two teams is interesting and I still hope for a clear first place for the USA, but at the moment, the confident result of Japan is getting along better. It looks like the Japanese team will be able to hold on to third place. In many ways, thanks to the persecutors taking medals from each other  Grin

In Search of Incredible
The Brazilian soccer team just beat Mexico 4-1 on penalties. We expect Brazil to reach the final, but the way it happened (the match score was 0-0, not a single goal scored) left many betters who were betting on Brazil to win in regulation time and on the number of goals during the match.
~ Now Spain vs Brasil for gold and silver (08.07 Saturday), and Japan vs Mexico for bronze (08.06 Friday)! I plan to bet on Japan, for sure they have the motivation to take this bronze, they play at home! The final game will be interesting, bookies give a little advantage to Brasil... but I am not sure they will win!
The same scenario may not repeat in the final game. Hoping to see a clear winner within the main time (90 minutes) of the game. Brazil have slightly higher possibility to win, but there is no reason to keep any team ahead based on the odds. Although I have placed a bet on Brazil team that they are going to win Gold in Men's football event. So it isn't going to make any difference if they win the match by scoring in extra time or penalties. I'm just expecting them to win the game.

I might have mentioned before the games started on bookie odds on US to get the most golds and China coming in second at 4.4x. The wise move would have been to ignore 1.1 for USA and take a bet on China, but I felt at the time US were just too strong in athletics. So I stupidly but a rather big bet (for my standards) and now looking at the leaderboard it seems China is widening the gap every day.

Any chance you still think?

This was what all bookmakers expected. The USA being the country that would get the most medals of gold.
The Olympic games are almost over. That's why the chances of the USA to overcome China, in gold medals, starts to be more and more difficult.

I saw this fight live, and I really think that if the classification was stolen from the Colombian, it is also necessary to highlight that the Japanese were taken out in a wheelchair, at least in the news on Caracol Tv they say that they stole the fight from the boxer.

What do you think of it?

Awarding points in boxing is always a controversial topic. There can be occasions where it is not very clear which boxer had the upper hand. In such cases, the scoring will depend on what the judges think. Ever since modern boxing moved from a knockout based system to a points based system, this has been the case. As such, there is no readymade solution. May be in the near future, artificial intelligence may become a reality and robots will be able to decide the points. Till then, the human error and uncertainty will be there in the boxing ring.

Bias and controversial decisions in boxing are often found even at the professional level, and at the level of amateur competitions like the Olympics, this is a traditional phenomenon. The judges traditionally help the hosts of the tournament, I have not watched this fight but I would not be surprised if the judges really helped the boxer from Japan.

That's a controversy now, Filipinos believe that they were cheated because the fight even ended a unanimous decision in favor of the Japanese boxer, it was a close fight so it could have ended as a split decision. Well, you know, the host of the event usually gets the favor, so that's alright.

Well, this controversy has gone so far, that the Colombian Olympic committee has demanded the fight of the Colombian against the Japanese, at the moment they are contacting the international experts to see and study the case, if the judges were fair enough or if they were attached to the rules of boxing, on the Caracol television channel, they are following the case, they say they have not declared any results yet, but if things have been done this way it is because they have found irregularities in the fight.

as far as I know, it is a Mediterranean sport, that is not followed much outside of these countries that are in QF
Greece is a surprise for me, but I do not think that they can handle to reach final, regarding other two semi-finals, Serbia started well against Italy (4:2 first quarter), and yeah Croatia is a little favorite against Hungary, since Hungary is a bit weaker last years, they were the best ten years ago
Spain played best up to this point, but all these teams have chances to win gold medal, it is pretty equal between top teams

Does anyone follow waterpolo?
Spain and Green have very convincingly reached the semifinals and in the next 2 matches of the quarterfinals I give the advantage to Croatia and Serbia although Hungary and Italy are not without chances.
Spain is the obvious favorite for gold.

Temporary forum vacation
Similar incidents have happened several times in Olympics. This time it is something special, because the medals were shared between two friends. After the ceremony Tamberi mentioned Barshim as his friend since 2010. In an world championship meet both became friends. Few years back Tamberi had attended the wedding of Barshim. Now both has shared the medal shows the value of friendship and true sportsmanship.

A so now I know,,, so actually they were friends now the video makes complete sense! I mean, the Qatari guy was smiling so long and looking at his friend long before the Italian jumped on him and hugged him.

I do not know about you guys but all this kinds of stories really make me love sports so much, regardless of the sports. I have to say it is a pity sportsmanship is not seen a lot in soccer.

Now Spain vs Brasil for gold and silver (08.07 Saturday), and Japan vs Mexico for bronze (08.06 Friday)! I plan to bet on Japan, for sure they have the motivation to take this bronze, they play at home! The final game will be interesting, bookies give a little advantage to Brasil... but I am not sure they will win!

^^^^ Boxing is not a sport that can be easily converted in to a competitive item. Because unless one of the athletes knock out the other, there will always be accusations of bias towards the judges. I have posted this before, but in professional boxing I have seen the better performer losing out because of the bias from the judges. The Canelo Álvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin matches are perfect examples (and it happened not once, but twice). Sometimes the judges may unintentionally gave more points to the boxer who has performed poorly. But at least in some cases, it can be intentional. And when the judges favor an athlete from the host nation, that always give rise to controversy.
I think that if the fighter performs much better than the other every round, I think that they will be able to decide without a doubt and bias that the fighter who had a good performance is the winner. I guess you're right that there's a possibility that there's some political strings being pulled but we will never be sure of it.

Not everything has gone smoothly. Every day we are hearing news about athletes pulling out of Olympics, because they have tested positive for COVID. The latest news is that Greece has withdrawn from the artistic swimming competitions, after 4 of their athletes tested positive. 18 new cases of COVID were reported from the Olympic village yesterday alone, and most of them involved athletes. Till now a total of 294 individuals have tested positive inside the Games village. Japan as a whole is witnessing a major spike and the authorities have implemented emergency measures.

This is the sad story of the Olympics. Not only the postponement, but also the fact that the games cannot have an audience and that some athletes lose the opportunity to participate.

Portugal also had an athlete who tested positive for Covid, and did not participate in surfing. He was a favorite.  Sad

We can't avoid such media hype because sometimes they mislead the audience from facts. But if you know the sports and you are closely following the event, you will understand that it is not what the media portrays. Anyway, I am grateful that despite the troubles brought by covid pandemic, this olympics event is about to finish. Many athletes have gotten their first gold even first gold for countries like Philippines.

history was made with second gold for Italy, and also by sharing gold medal between Italian and Qatari in high jumping, memorable scene, congrats to Italy

A lot of hype has been generated in the social media regarding this incident. The left-wing posters claims that the Qatari did something very ethical and offered to share the gold that was due to him to the "injured" Italian. But facts prove that they are wrong. Both had one attempt left, and it was the Qatari athlete who first refused another attempt (both of them had failed to clear 2.39m on three occasions). He refused one attempt, where he had around 1% chance of clearing, and then the media suddenly overhyped it claiming that it was a monstrous act of generosity.  Grin

Yes, the truth is that I don't know what the criteria for scoring are, but what is most striking is that the Japanese knew that he was going to lose, I don't know if because he is from the home of the Olympics he has some kind of benefit, but Actually the effort and the preparation of the athletes can be frustrated with acts like these, I don't know if the Olympic or sporting sense doesn't make sense now, but I'm sure that someone who watches the fight will see that the winner is the Colombian.

Personally I love boxing, I did not practice it as my sport, but I did train with some friends, and the preparation for it is very hard, it is also usually one of the most dangerous sports and under which there is the risk of dying in competition.

Many say that this type of act ends the dreams of athletes, I am not from Colombia, but it hurts me a lot to see acts that are not fair arise.

Don't know if anyone has talked about it already but Nesthy Petecio got the silver medal against Irie Sena, it seems that the pressure of going for another gold for a country that hasn't experienced a gold for almost a century can put you in a pressure albeit subconsciously.
