Hard to find young players if you want to fix your opening slot. Almost everyone (Gill, Prithvi, Paddikkal etc) already playing for other teams and overseas players like Finch might be bit expensive, may be that's why they went for Robin Uttappa.
I guess CSK bought Robbie as a replacement player only because last year Ruturaj Gaikwod proved that he can open the innings so he will be opening along with Faf and the middle order of CSK already packed with Raina, Rayudu, MSD, Bravo and Jadeja but they miss someone who can bat as well as bowl-like Shane Watson or at least a proper middle-order batsman is needed for sure if CSK wants to shine like before.

I found some article and it seems CSK wants to buy those players.

3 players Chennai Super Kings might target in IPL 2021 auction
I don't think if they have enough money to buy guys like Smith and Maxwell. Their total cost is close to $3 million, unless they are expecting to buy them cheaply or virtually no bid war, which seems very unlikely.

Robbie, once he was a great player but he is not really looking good in the recent IPL and again CSK went for 35 year old player? Huh

Still CSK gt 6 slots and only one overseas slots in it, not sure which one they are going to pick up for overseas, my guess will be they need a good player in the middle order so they will go with the same weaker bowling attack. Roll Eyes

I don't know what is wrong with the CSK management team. They should ideally look for younger players, who can give them a quick opening stand. And they have gone for a guy, who is well past his prime. Uthappa currently plays for Kerala in the Indian domestic cricket structure and I have seen him in a few matches. He can't even run properly, although once in a while he score big runs.

Chennai going to do much better in this season as they are playing in India and this time they got virtually zero dead weight in their squad (Jadhav.Murli Vijay).
The player transfer is open and RR have traded Robin Uthappa to CSK and they are building the team but they released Harbhajan Singh and  Piyush Chawla along with a few other players.

Mumbai released Lasith Malinga may be due to his fitness concerns.  Aaron Finch and Chris Morris released by RCB.

Forgot the Rahul Tewatia magic and there were some impressive performance and wins as well.
Rahul Tewatia batted at lower order and he didn't got much opportunities to prove his batting capabilities. But whenever he got a chance, he made the most use out of it. But IPL 2020 was extremely disappointing for the Rajasthan Royals, as they finished rock bottom of the points table. Even the CSK managed to finish ahead of them despite the horrible start they had.
Looking at the points table Rajasthan Royals is at the bottom, but this is the most competitive season as far i know about IPL and if you looking at the winning table CSK and KXIP won the same amount of games while KKR, RCB and SRH won one more match than the bottom Rajasthan Royals. The team management should be scrutinized for not picking the best team even though they had the talents and not giving the players the opportunity and holding players down the order.

Lord Tewatia almost finished the Sheldon Cottrell's IPL career. After getting hammerd by Tewatia, poor guy didn't get the games and now Punjab released him. Hope he gets the new buyer.
Lol. Very true. I don't think he will be saluting much anymore thanks to his recent performances. Releasing him was the right call by Punjab in my opinion. Releasing Maxwell was another great call too. Punjab needs to seriously rethink their options.

They are probably trying the same experiment which they did with Piyush last season. Both players were from KKR. Only time will tell if this was a good decision.

Auction coming next month so they have some time to think, their purse is not big so young players seems obvious choice. It was 22ish crore before and they already bought Robin Uttapa for 3ish crore, chances are he's going to open for CSK. Jadhav used to be stroke player but now he's big liability due to age and fitness. In last season he was showing off his defense technique when CSK needed some quick runs.

Will be happy if Chennai manages to get a few younger players. During the last tournament, more than half of their players were aged 35 and above (and that was the case even with Harbhajan Singh skipping the tournament). Jadhav and Vijay are a good players, but their playing style may not be suitable for T20. They need to get some top order players who can score at around 1.5-2.0 runs per ball.

CSK is about to rebuild its core team this time because its already said by MSD at the end of last season which was horrible except for the last few matches. Don't forget that Watto also retired so they need to find someone who can open the innings for them and also for the future years. Bowling department also getting weaker with CSK and I didn't see Imran Tahir's name in the released or retained list of CSK but I consider that he also will be released due to the age factor.

This was expected. Steve Smith was disappointing for RR, in terms of both captaincy and batting. Anyway, his T20 record is not as great as his test record. Last time, they purchased him for such a huge amount but he failed to deliver what was expected from him.
I thought Smith is let go because of the controversy he created during the recent Test series as images were shown repeatedly that he removed the batting guard of Pant. RR started well and they had some impressive wins but failed to capitalize in important matches.

Apart from Sanju Samson, none of the other RR batsmen were impressive during the last tournament. RR may be looking to replace Smith with someone from West Indies or South Africa.

Big news. It seems Smith is being released by RR. Crazy move if you ask me. I guess he might be picked up for a record amount in the upcoming auction.

Even though his character and sportsmanship are below average, his batting skills are off the charts which is why I think RR messed up royally here.

Well they were standing at bottom last season and he didn't perform that good. Guess they did okay considering his big price tag, there is slight chance that RR might buy him back on auction cheaply if there is no bidding war for him.

Anyway this is complete list.

The question is for how long Wriddhiman Saha will be considered for the national team. He is already 36 years old and there are signs that age is catching up with him. Even if he remains in contention for the next 1-2 years, the BCCI needs to come up with a backup plan. First they need to decide whether Rishabh Pant is their first choice or not. If that is not the case, then they need to give adequate opportunities for players such as Samson and Kishan.
Rishabh Pant should not be their first choice wicket keeper, he can be in the team as a batsman, the amount of catches he drops every match is insane and you need to have a specialist in that position as they are ones that creates chances and convert the half chances to wickets but Pant drops regulation catches and how can he be called a specialist wicket keeper.

You cannot find a specialist keeper like Adam Gilchrist, Kumar Sangakkara or Dhoni, identify the best talents who have safe hands rather than looking for players who drops catches and then give the opponent the opportunity to score 100 or 150 and then come on to bat and score 50 runs does not mean anything.

How many wicket-keeper batsman or pure WK does India have in the domestic/national level ? I heard only 5 names so far. Saha is pure WK and as Sanju manju says everyone else seems bit n pieces.  Grin.. Dinesh Kartik international career is about to end so not including him.

1- Saha (pure WK)
2- Rishab
3- KL Rahul
4- Samson
5- Ishan Kishan
