England has been in this tournament with so many good and over hyped players but still nothing to show for in 3 games only 2 goals and some still see them as one of the favorite to win the tournament. Their forwards haven't lived up to the expectation with the likes of Foden, Harry Kane, Bellingham and the Arsenal man Saka, this made one of Arsenal's legend Ian Wright who loves to see Saka play, came out to say;

Quote
Wright explained: "With how naturally left-sided Saka is, can we put Saka at left-back and Palmer on the right-hand side?"

I watched England last game and what I noticed is the difference Cole Palmer made when he was brought on, if he had gotten more time England would had won that game but they did not need it because they were already heading to the round of 16. Southgate not playing Cole Palmer is among why England has not been playing well in the tournament. After the display he had, I want to see him start more and playing Saka and Cole Palmer is a good decision. Trent Alexander-Arnold is a right back and he should not be played on in the mid field but as a right back so the team can get back their shape. England should not disappoint us because we want them to be in the finals as the most value team in the competition. Harry Kane should get substituted, that man might be cursed and he might make England not win another title that they could win because of his curse of no title.

Palmer made a change in that game he came in as a sub with the other players, one other thing is that these guys who played massively well in their clubs are the ones who are not performing well, players like Bellingham, Saka, Phil Foden even Kane are the ones who are regular starters but still they fail to bring that energy they had in their respective teams. I was expecting Southgate to drop all these players and start a fresh team because if you check those players I mentioned all played very well in the last Euros excluding Bellingham so why not give the fans new faces to start and along the line sub them and bring in those players who are the starters in this tournament.
I'm the last person to say I want England to win the tournament because they are always having the best players but not doing well. Talking about the right back, they have Alexander Arnold, Walker and Kieran John Trippier all in the same game but no left back, the team is not balanced in any way and they have better midfielders but Southgate chose to play a right back as a midfielder not giving the other good players a chance to showcase their ability and you expect them to excel? Never, I hope they get knocked out before the quarter finals.
As for Kane he can't win any trophy from the way things are going and I feel for him. Maybe England can win a trophy when he's not invited to the national team.

I have read a fan's comment on Southgate on X but I can't find the source right now.  Sad  They said Southgate had Bundesliga top scorer, La Liga player of the season and Premier League player of the season all in the same squad but he was still not able to make any use of them. This is one of the best ways to state England's condition now.

It is all because of Southgate. Otherwise I believe England has the best squad in Euro 2024 now. How can you play this poorly, right? I'm glad that I'm not a fan otherwise I would be very uneasy with this situation.  Tongue

Prior to the UEFA Euros Competition, I said something about this countless times and how they're lions lead by a goat who claims he knows when he knows nothing.
He is not a tactically sound coach and has nothing to prove and can't even demand the best from his players. He has player's who top most of the charts for their clubs as well for league but can't utilize them. Also, Harry Kane hasn't been buzzing why not drop him for Ivan Toney or Ollie Watkins?

Harry Kane highest goal scorer for Bayern Munich and Bundesliga.
Jude Bellingham scored 20+ goals.
Phil Foden did win player of the season in the Premier League Competition and had his best season in between.
Cole Palmer also did for Chelsea.
Declan Rice was brilliant for Arsenal damn right I can forget Kobbie Mainoo...... You'd wonder why he can't field the best. How about Bukayo Saka? 20+ goals, yes?

We will see what happens from the knockout stage. He should stick with Rice, Kobbie Cole Palmer and Jude Bellingham in midfied and Phil Foden and Harry Kane upfront. ( In my opinion ) the midfied is key if they're not moving forward then there'll be problem eventually scoring goals. So far, they have defended well.

I am more interested in the three matches in the Round of 16.

  • Switzerland vs Italy
  • France vs Belgium
  • Austria vs Turkey
France vs Belgium is a biggest match in the Round of 16. Belgium reputation and squad strength drop a lot since their failure in Euro 2020 and World Cup 2022 but they still have big names in their squad and with unimpressive performances of France so far, Belgium can make a shock in this round.

This match will be very competitive. France squad has plenty of star players. Mbappe, Dembele, Rabiot, Kante and Tchouameni are all very experienced players. But the problem is that despite having a strong France squad, the team is not getting the expected performance from their attacking players. France won only one of the three matches. And the team managed to score only two goals in 3 matches.

The situation in Belgium is not very good. Belgium won 1 and lost 1 out of 3 matches. This is why the France vs Belgium match is likely to be very competitive.

There is no doubt that these three matches will be very competitive. Besides, all the remaining matches are more likely to be one-sided. Unless the renowned teams make any major mistakes in the match. England, Germany, Spain and Portugal compete against Slovakia, Denmark, Georgia and Slovenia respectively. These teams are not that strong. So England, Germany, Spain and Portugal will not have a tough road to qualify for the quarter finals. However, it is impossible to predict with certainty which two of the four teams Switzerland, Italy, France and Belgium will qualify for the next round.
If all strong teams win in the Round of 16, except France vs Belgium with only one strong team will go to quarter final round, we will have chance to watch one of the most exciting quarter final rounds in history of EURO.
Most of teams like Spain, Germany, Portugal, England, Italy, France / Belgium, Netherlands, Turkey already won Euro titles in history. Only Turkey and Belgium did not win any Euro title.

Belgium and Turkey have yet to win the Euros. The team would have had a better chance of qualifying for the next round if not for France. But now it will be very difficult for Belgium to defeat the France team. .Turk on the other hand is not very strong. But the bonding between the players is strong. This team has a great chance to win against Austria.

Smart is not enough, there must be skills
After leaving the group stage behind and the draw we have, I'm expecting all the favourites to win except Italy. I just can't trust them with this poor level performance.

Italy weren't like they were on the pitch against Spain and they barely saved 1 point against Croatia as well. Life savers like this wouldn't happen all the time. Switzerland are doing pretty well. They even made difficulties for Germany you know and didn't lose to them. If they are able to stand strong there, they should be able to do it way better against this Italy. I'm afraid the last champion isn't playing good at all...  Sad

The atmosphere and pressure in the group stage & knockout round is different, you might see Switzerland playing quite well in the group stage, but maybe they will lose to Italy in the round of 16. Don't you remember how Italy managed to beat England in the last EURO edition?

Then, don't you look at the betting market? The odds on Switzerland & Italy are quite lopsided, which indicates that it's very likely that this match will be won by Italy. I also have no doubt that Italy will win the match, Switzerland are only good in the group, and when it goes to the knockout round, they don't have the mentality to win.
The group stage is indeed different pressure, we can see how Germany, Portugal and France play relaxed because they are sure to qualify while the knockout round will feel more intense, I think Italy has more to win than Switzerland.

Quite attractive odds are offered by the bookies and indeed Italy is the favorite of all bookies, I will also choose Italy because I see the chances of winning much bigger.
Although Italy is considered a team that is lacking in performance in this tournament but in this match it can be more pressing again.

It must be feeling terrible for Ukraine to say goodbye despite collecting 4 points.  Sad  If they finished Group E in 3rd place they were going to guarantee reaching next round by being one of top 3rd-placed teams.

Anyway now my concentration is all on our game against Czech Republic today. Looking at our starting 11, I don't really know what Montella is up to again...

Keeping a player who scored an embarrassing own goal as a starter must be a joke. Another thing is his choices in the attacking area. I hope this doesn't cause us to struggle more for no reason while he can build a better lineup. Even 1 point is enough for us to secure 2nd place to face Austria instead of Spain.

Most times good teams lose to smaller ones because of underestimation. When Ukraine played against Romania, they felt they could demolish them and coupled with the fact they were asking more of the questions in the half of Romania in the early stages of the game, they thought this was an easy game.
I like the way Romania were not intimidated by the force of Ukraine and still did their thing and the tables turned when that first goal came in, you could see the once compact and organized team of Ukraine falling like a pack of card when they couldn't salvage the game and ended up losing 3-0. That was where their problems started as their morale to fight dropped and other teams felt emboldened by the confidence of Romania and gave them a hard time when they played them.

your prediction is not wrong, even I as an Italian am convinced that Italy will lose against Switzerland. There is no game and in the past it would have been a fairly easy match instead now it has practically become a challenging match that the Italian national team will surely lose.
Switzerland came out of the preliminary round unbeaten, while Italy experienced one loss, one draw and one win. This match will be difficult for Italy because Switzerland played very well at the Euro this time, it is difficult to hope that Italy can survive at the Euro with the quality of play shown in the group stage. Italy must improve the quality of its game if it wants to overcome the challenge presented by Switzerland. The match in the round of 16 will be more exciting because each team really needs a win to qualify for the next round. Luciano Spalletti must develop Italy game and increase his sharpness up front to put pressure on Switzerland.

After a goalless first half against the Czech Republic, the second half was very exciting. After we scored the first goal, we had an unfortunate
We saw a goal. The Czech Republic being down to 10 men was important for us and helped us to win the match. With Cenk Tosun's goal in the last minutes, we managed to beat our opponent and come 2nd from the group. I wish it would have been a different result because it was a day when Georgia also beat Portugal and we could have come out of the group as the leader maybe in the last minutes.

Recently many people have been disappointed with England's performance at the Euros, even my friend who was very optimistic about England winning the trophy seems to no longer believe it. England will play the 16th round and the challenge will definitely be more difficult than fighting in the group. If the quality of England's game is like now and nothing changes, then in my opinion England deserves to be knocked out. If you look at the back, middle and front lines, England is very capable, but when it comes to the field there is really nothing surprising for us to see. It's a bit surprising as a national team whose domestic league is the tightest but in a competition as big as the Euro has to play with poor quality.

What's wrong with England? The root of the problem and the obstacle to England truly maximizing its star players is Southgate. There is no other national team like England, in every line there are important players whose contributions have been proven. But in the hands of coach Southgate everything is lost, and nothing amazes our eyes when we watch it. England will face Slovakia in the round of 16, where on paper England is superior because it consists of star players, but on the field Slovakia can actually dominate and will make England worthy of being eliminated.

They don't have a playing pattern and Southgate isn't helping out in anyway even when he sees the fans reaction to his regular playing of same players who are not making any difference. Slovakia can't be seen as a small opponent against England and if care is not taken the English team will head to extra time in that encounter because their performance is nothing to write home about in this competition. Southgate is the main reason why ex EPL players and ex England players are free to say things about his selections of players especially the one Ian Wright said on Saka to play as a left back in their next game.

Indeed, Italy did not play well and was only able to reach 2nd place in Group B and also only managed to get 4 points. Of course it is natural if you believe that Italy will fail to win in the next match in the round of 16 against Switzerland.

indeed, if you look at this, of course Switzerland is superior to Italy and indeed that is strong evidence that Switzerland is indeed a strong opponent for Italy and indeed the score when Switzerland played against Germany was 1-1 and that is a good achievement achieved by Switzerland and Italy to date. They were still lucky because against Croatia the result was a draw but fortunately in the final minutes of the match Italy managed to score a goal against Croatia finally a 1-1 draw

However, Italy has now successfully advanced to the round of 16 and of course I am sure that Luciano will definitely make his men perform even better in this last 16 match and of course I am sure that Luciano will learn from past experiences. However, according to my hunch, Italy will give us all a surprise in the next match and I am sure that as the last Euro champion he definitely does not want to be humiliated in this last 16 round. and when Italy plays Switzerland, I think I want to bet on Italy winning.

The knockout matches has been determined and the toughest game would be between France and Belgium where I believe France would advance.
Spain, Germany, Portugal, Netherlands, Turkiye, England and Italy would be the favorites in their respective competition but nothing can be said sure specially during knockouts.

Teams and their clash are final now and after 2 day break round of 16 matches are on their way. Every team is good and shows a good intention so not even a single match is easy for anyone. The team that play a good game will surely win the match and proceed further.

Austria surprised by beating the Netherlands but I'm not discouraged by Turkey because this team still deserves to win in this knockout round, maybe it can be said that the team is balanced because Turkey is also a team that cannot be underestimated.

At least with a 2-1 Czech win it's better than nothing, I know the Czechs were down to 10 men but Turkey seemed to struggle a bit but in the final game Turkey scored their winner, more disappointed that Portugal lost even though they had qualified early.
Turkey was able to win because Barak received two yellow cards too quickly, which turned into a red, this happened in the 20th minute of the match, and of course Turkey had enough time to take advantage of this, although my opinion is that the Czech Republic played very well despite that. Austria's victory was definitely unexpected, I think that many of us underestimated this team properly. Austria played a friendly match with Turkey not long ago, we all remember the result, taking this into account, I think that Austria will be able to defeat Turkey.

I don't understand why people are surprised to see Georgia beat Portugal, like I said before, when a team already secured the position, they will lose the motivation to win.

See England and France, they can't beat their opponents even they have good quality. Portugal is same, they just want to play without pressure and don't mind if they lose.
Georgia played well in the previous matches, but Portugal was a clear favorite and the odds for Georgia's victory were 8.2 and this tells us that even bookmakers did not believe in Georgia's victory. Besides, I would not compare Portugal with France and Belgium, because Portugal won their previous matches quite freely, scoring a lot of goals and it was obvious that this is a team of a different level and unlike France and Belgium, the players of the Portuguese national team did not suffer on the field or did not play their matches to a zero draw, like Belgium with Ukraine, so many people thought that this time Portugal won.
Georgia were very lucky to score first, but more importantly, the referee started giving yellow cards to the Portuguese players for simulation and they stopped falling in the Georgian penalty box in the hope of getting a penalty.

The matches in Group F are over and Turkey is second and advances to the next round.

Hakan Çalhanoğlu and Cenk Tosun scored great goals.
I think there was a foul in the Czech goal but the referee didn't give it.
The referee showed a yellow card for every foul.

Turkey is still playing without a striker, I still don't understand what Montella is trying to do.
Arda Güler and Kenan Yıldız were very bad today. Arda missed a clear goal, he just had to touch the ball.
Turkey and Czech game was very interesting as injury time goal send turkey into round of 16 a lot of fights cards rash challenges take place in this game and it was worth to watch that match .

Don't be pessimistic for Italy there is still hope to beat Switzerland while Italy still has a mentality in the big competition even though the game is declining I don't need to underestimate it.
Not yet seen the betting market for this knockout round, whether the odds of Switzerland and Italy are almost the same or there is a big difference, but in the match no team is looking for safety they must win if they want to qualify while Italy still has hope.

Italy maybe given higher chances of winning before extra time probably base on past meetings but I doubt if this match might get to extra time or penalty shootout but if it does I think it becomes more difficult to predict who would win especially in the penalty shootout because both goalie are beast in that category.

Though I think Switzerland would win, except maybe Italy might be able to use opportunity to score because Switzerland being to hold Germany to a draw is huge feet to me especially from the fact that Germany scored the highest number of goals in Group stage.

Switzerland - Italy: probably the toughest game. Switzerland has delivered an awesome game against Germany and they have shown how dangerous they can be. Italy can never be written off with their last minute goal. That's going to be a tough and close one.
..

In fact this match worries me a lot, in recent years Switzerland has improved a lot and has a good game and a good dribbling. For us it is a very complicated match and we certainly must not make mistakes otherwise we are out. It would be nice to advance.

Today Portugal match was really bad, of course not it was tiring, obviously without motivation, it's a pity that Ronaldo didn't score, but the level of refereeing was below criticism.
Portugal does not play with his bench strength as they already secured their place in the round of 16 but at least they have to show a good game which they didn't such a boring match it was.

The only interesting match from the 1/8 finals would probably be France-Belgium. I watched Belgium-Ukraine and I'm not impressed at all by the Belgian team. Why they didn't put some effort and win against Ukraine, so that they could get a better opponent in the elimination stage?
In all the other matches, the favorites would most likely win against the outsiders. Georgia won against Portugal 2-0 but this is probably because Portugal had already won their group. Anyway, the Euro 2024 is getting more and more boring to me. Maybe the teams will start playing for real in the next stage.

Teams are getting more and more familiar with the tournament with each match. For example, Georgia, which has never played at the European Championship, showed a great game yesterday against Portugal. I thought the Portuguese team would win with an advantage of 2 goals at least, but quite unexpectedly Georgia did it. So the teams will show great soccer in the playoff matches.
