I couldn't follow the match properly but from what I heard, Portugal did have at least another clear opportunity to score but failed, same goes for Croatia, so at the end there wasn't big difference and Croatia merit that victory.
Well, all I can say is that you heard it wrong as Croatia was clearly better and it could have ended much worse for Portugal if we had a little bit more composure.

After all, this remains an unofficial game since their last official face to face matches ended with Portugal victories if I am not mistaken.
Friendly games are also official games. Anyway, this is the first time that we managed to beat Portugal and it was the last big team that we didn't beat before.

The bookies made a lot of money yesterday because only a few doubted the victory of Portugal, but that's always the case with those who bet on teams just because they think that Portugal is better than Croatia because they have Ronaldo - who was officially announced that he won't even play in that match. Underestimating tactics is not something that should be practiced in sports today, but it is only an opportunity for those who know how to use it.

Jack Grealish has been a joke no doubts. I didn't see much games of Eze but displacing Gordon and Phil Foden would be crazy. Southgate made the right call in these areas no arguments but what's the importance of Alexander Arnold in midfied? Weak with defending, maybe his passing skills enough to earn him a place. I don't fancy him.

Arnold will play very well in the midfield, I was thinking his skills are being wasted as a right back. If he is giving more privileges to advance in games in the midfield he will be able to give out more passes and get more assist. There are better right backs in the England team than him and he deserves to have a place in the team. Southgate has his last opportunity to bring home a trophy with the squad because England has a very good squad that should be able to win the Euros. He should make use of Bellingham because he is very good at playing false nine. Harry Kane should be used as a super sub and not the main striker because he is getting too old and this is not club football that he has being dominating. England has to win the Euros and they are favourites.

Euro 2024 will start next week. The last friendly matches are being played these days. And we are seeing some surprise results. That's why I try not to bet on friendly matches. But when the schedule is not rich, I have to. Cheesy Tonight's match between Italy and Bosnia and Herzegovina caught my attention. Italy is in Euro 2024. Bosnia and Herzegovina is not in Euro 2024. It will be an interesting match. I won't bet again. But I watched Italy last time when they played against Turkiye. Bosnia and Herzegovina will not be an easy opponent for them, even if it is a friendly match. I think under 2,5 goals in this match.

Maddison was a complete shit with Tottenham this season, Ben Chilwell couldn't even get a starting spot in a mediocre Chelsea team, Luke Shaw and Kyle Walker are two England players that have good pace and can be used as CB when the need arise in certain matches, England have great pace in attack and wide areas of the midfield but when it comes to playing teams that have also got pace in attack, I really don't see a better choice for them at the back than having either Kyle Walker or Luke Shaw help with CB defensive duties, because the choice of either Trippier and/or Arnold as we all know lack pace and are extremely vulnerable in defense compared to either Walker or Shaw.

Jack Grealish barely played for City this past season and the options called ahead of him are literally very much justified, who would you rather drop for Grealish ?? Foden, Gordon or Eze, each and every of these players had a much better season than Grealish in terms of form and performance... Would anybody pick Maddison over Cole Palmer or Jude Bellingham ?

If you all are mentioning Grealish, Chilwell and Maddison, you might as well just add Raheem Sterling, Reece James and Marcus Rashford since it seems rather just more about the players name, than what they can currently offer or what the squads actually need!

Madder wasn't shiit, he was brilliant not until the game against Chelsea as he got Injured. I be wishing that never happened but this is reality. In the areas he plays, the names you have mentioned had great impacts than him yeah, I did not look at it that way until your post but then, Jude Bellingham Is no number 10 player people should know that, he is a box to box man. Cole Palmer deserves it, he's earned it and he'll do well I'm certain.

Luke Shaw barely played a game, all you said was about his pace ( that I don't argue ) but he seems tested and trusted. It's all upon Southgate and how these lads play. This would possibly be his last if he doesn't win it. Godspeed to the best side. Vamos!!

Do you think, whom are those "average or a little above average quality" players? just because they're not joining in top teams or popular, it doesn't mean they're low quality players.

Rashford, Maddison, Sterling, Sancho, Chilwell, James, Ben White, and Grealish are big players, but their performance aren't excellent in this season and there are better players that playing in the same position like them.

Example, attacking midfielder, although Maddison played well for Tottenham, but Bellingham and Gallagher way better than him.
I don't say about those players who are big names and experienced with their clubs and England national team in previous World Cup, Euro. Players I meant are young players who only have some matches in this season and Southgate decided to call them for this Euro 2024. You know Jude Bellingham was not called for England team in Euro 2021.

Kobbie Mainoo (Manchester United), Adam Wharton (Crystal Palace) are two young midfielders in England team for this Euro. Jude Bellingham is young too but he is at different and higher level than Mainoo and Wharton. Southgate only have Declan Rice as an experienced and good defensive midfielder for this Euro. He will have to pray that Declan Rice will not have injury and will play well for England.

These callings of Southgate contain so much risk for England team in Euro 2024.

If we're mentioning players, there's more of them that Gareth Southgate have dropped from his squad based on realizing their incompetence and peak.

Maddison is among one of the best players for Tottenham Hotspur this season but he has completely failed to make progress other than picking up severe injury that will keep him unbalance. England have one of the best category of players but they've failed to win any significant any major title. They've always fall out from these top phased which is quite understanding.

England have big names on their squad that's why many will see them as one of the favorite to win the tournament and I don't see that happening with the manager Southgate, he has been inviting same set of players and nothing to show for it. Players that ain't suppose to make the list he'd invite them, someone like Jack Grealish, he hasn't proven himself since the big money move to City only drinking, partying and while in the pitch he only throws himself to be tackled but he's been added to the squad, Harry Maguire isn't fit but he's included.
My worry is the players who are fit but won't get to showcase their abilities to help the 3 lions go forward. And if care isn't taken they might be kicked out too soon because we have stronger countries that are also favorite to win and I don't think England can withstand them when the time comes.

Good Points made. But them, these names mentioned have both been axed from the squad representing the three lions at the UEFA European Competitions in the next couple days.

Jack Grealish, James Madison and Harry Maguire all has been removed completely.... Another name I expected not to be on that list would be Luke Shaw who I think has not even done anything for Manchester United not to talk about playing a full game ever since he returned from Injury.
We've got names like Hall and Ben Chiwell who I think deserves a better place than Luke Shaw in that squash. Hall former Chelsea defender should have ended immediately.

As usual Southgate is already sentimental with that, he'll never win then too

In as much as they do have first list before the final list I still don't think Grealish and Maguire should even come close to those who was called up, Maddison can be allowed to join but it seems truly that Southgate is always finding it hard to make a better selection for the team. I don't know why the injured players are the ones he finds ok to work with. Hall has proven himself but since Chilwell can't make the squad I don't think he can. I just hope we won't be seeing England leaving the competition like Germany in the world cup with a very poor performance after much is expected.

Spain are looking a bit good today after going 1 goal behind in the 2nd minute of the game vs Northern Ireland. Spain have managed to turn around the deficit by a huge margin, they've scored 4 goals in the first half alone, two goals from Pedri, with Morata and Fabian Ruiz also finding themselves on the scoresheet.

That should be another positive result and performance for them to onto ahead of the Euros, they're looking somewhat good, I'm not just very convinced ahead of the main showpiece, but maybe it's something to do with all teams having had a long season already.

It’s very close to the start of Euro 2024, and teams are playing their last friendly matches before the tournament. Tonight, there was a friendly match between Portugal and Croatia, two important contenders for the cup. Croatia beat a 2-1 victory. Luka Modric scored from the penalty spot in the 8th minute, and Ante Budimir added another goal in the 56th minute. Portugal’s lone goal came from Diogo Jota.

The warm up matches before the main event kicks off next week might not be so important for many but the truth is that we can't shy away from the fact that the some of the results we've witnessed so far weren't expected. We know that Portugal would've fielded a stronger lineup which would've definitely included Cristiano Ronaldo if the match was to be a very strong one but we also shouldn't see as a reason why Portugal should lose to Croatia. I love the Portuguese national team and would want them to have a great tournament in upcoming UEFA Euros Championship so I think the coach of the side should as a matter of urgency try improve the team so they don't underperform like they did today.

I don't believe England deserve to be called as the biggest favourite by the bookmakers. Just because they reached the finale in Euro 2020 we can't say they are the closest team to the title again. Before anything else this isn't a thing they do regularly. Besides they have an unsuccessful history. They won a World Cup like 60 years ago and that's all.
This will be difficult for us to see before seeing their matches, although I also have the same thoughts as you but we cannot yet claim that England has a greater chance or not to be the winner this time, we may need to see a few games to judge a team, especially a national team that has the best players.
I think England is the favorite because the bookmaker predicted that England will reach the semifinals/final easily based on their matches schedule since the group stage.
England will win the Group C and in the round of 16 they will face 3rd Group D/E/F (Poland/Slovakia/Czech).
In the quarterfinals, they will face the runners up of Group A or B (Switzerland/Italy), then in the semifinals they will most likely meet France or Belgium.
And it looks like Bookmaker has confidence that England will be able to beat France, and progress to the final.

Even they have had great players nowadays they just can't make it. This doesn't mean they won't ever be champions of course. But with Southgate? No I don't think so.  Sad  There has been a big need of a manager change for quite a while.
But strangely, in terms of squad depth, I actually always see that the English national team is one of the national teams that has a lot of good players in it. So the depth of their squad is undoubtedly one of the best. So I feel it's natural for them to be favourites. But I personally don't want to play favorites with them. Because yes, I also always see how the English national team always fails to go any further in the end. So I might also agree with everything you say. And what's more, yesterday the English national team also played a friendly match against Zealand. And the result was that the England National Team lost. Although the result of the match is not that important. But from this match I can say that what the English National Team lacked was in finishing attacks. But in the group phase, the English national team will face Serbia. And I think England can win the first match of the group phase.

Are you proud of your country?
Can they do well in the presence of Germany, England, Brazil, Belgium, and others?

I am not in support any team, because I am a Nigerian, but I hope I enjoy watching the entire tournament because I am supporting some certain number of players because of their league performances.

I can't say that I'm proud of my country in football. At least these days I mean. I have given an example from Euro 2008. We did great by reaching the semi finals and making big difficulties for Germany then.

But since then we couldn't reach the same level either in a Euro or World Cup.  Sad  We are similar in basketball also. We are more like a volleyball country. Maybe you might have heard about the successes of our national team and domestic teams in big tournaments if you follow this sports.

If we come back to Euro 2024, I don't think we are strong enough to beat any of the teams you have mentioned. But we have young talents so our future could be much better than this - hopefully.  Roll Eyes

Their tactics are all wrong, and they can't keep a clean sheet, which will be costly against top teams.
I believe that coaches always like to experiment during friendly games. Argentina lost their first game in the world cup and went onto win it because the loss brought the awareness to them that they can fail out of the competition. This loss can help England take every other game more seriously starting from the group stages.
England's problem is that there are too many talented player's in England's team for any coach not to get confused. Southgate is overwhelmed, making decisions is hard.

Friendly games are a no gambling definition because players won't give 100% to actually win the game or to risk an injury before important games. Usually in friendly games , they like to test what they learned in practice and trainings but England losing against Iceland was actually a surprise and Romania losing 1.04 odds against Lichtenstein was even a bigger surprise that left a lot of bettors mad.

Actually, it is not too wrong because the qualifications and depth of the squad that England currently has are really very good and indeed they are quite worthy of being favorites, it's just that sometimes for big competitions such as the Euro and World Cup, England is sometimes not too conspicuous and even some other countries are much better in terms of performance.

Now they have a capable squad but the problem is that doubts about Southgate are also still quite large until now which makes this a little complicated.

Currently they are joined by Serbia, Slovenia and Denmark which are actually quite favorites to qualify from the group phase but on the other hand this is like an early view of whether Southgate is able to maximize their current talented squad because even though the players are good but when the scheme and formation do not match then there could be a gap in the end that makes England difficult.

To be fair, friendlies are there to test some players in some positions and it is not there to make sure that you win the games. I agree that it may not look like a good "sign" that they lost and that's understandable, it is always normal to be afraid of having a bad result, we are talking about a team we are likely bet to win and seeing this would make you question if you should bet on them at all.

But, I think it would be overreaction if we stop betting on them at all, it would make more sense if we could just simply let that game go, and we could just focus on how to get better in the end. We are not going to get anything that would be all too crazy, it is going to be just England facing trouble only near the end of the tournament at quarters or semis.
I agree with you that we need to look at some friendly matches to test some players and see how they perform on the pitch which might be able to see where the weaknesses and strengths are that can be relied upon and evaluated for a team. It doesn't mean that they are bad because they lost although we can call it a sign, but who knows that the coach is experimenting.

I think it's too early to say that England will have obstacles and problems until that stage, we can't conclude it today, if the thought is so, what is the right reason that can confirm it, in fact that scenario might be England can even get better, right?
