I don't believe England deserve to be called as the biggest favourite by the bookmakers. Just because they reached the finale in Euro 2020 we can't say they are the closest team to the title again. Before anything else this isn't a thing they do regularly. Besides they have an unsuccessful history. They won a World Cup like 60 years ago and that's all.

Even they have had great players nowadays they just can't make it. This doesn't mean they won't ever be champions of course. But with Southgate? No I don't think so.  Sad  There has been a big need of a manager change for quite a while.
This will be difficult for us to see before seeing their matches, although I also have the same thoughts as you but we cannot yet claim that England has a greater chance or not to be the winner this time, we may need to see a few games to judge a team, especially a national team that has the best players.

Having the best players does not mean that it will produce a good match, especially in an international arena like this where basically the training that these players have they don't have much time to improvise with each other and the adaptation of these players is also quite short so it will be very difficult to combine a difference and egoism in each player to get a very good game cooperation, this can also be seen from who trains them and how to make sure there are no discrepancies in the newly collected players, combining the styles of play from players in different clubs with a short time is quite difficult at the beginning. I also don't understand why the bookie is confident in England.

To be fair, friendlies are there to test some players in some positions and it is not there to make sure that you win the games. I agree that it may not look like a good "sign" that they lost and that's understandable, it is always normal to be afraid of having a bad result, we are talking about a team we are likely bet to win and seeing this would make you question if you should bet on them at all.

But, I think it would be overreaction if we stop betting on them at all, it would make more sense if we could just simply let that game go, and we could just focus on how to get better in the end. We are not going to get anything that would be all too crazy, it is going to be just England facing trouble only near the end of the tournament at quarters or semis.

I really agree with you, England does have quite good squad depth in almost every line, but personally I don't think they are in the top three favorite teams. England latest match against Iceland can be a reference, even though it was a friendly match that was not taken seriously. Southgate doesn't seem to be the right person to coach these star players, because the average English player has a big ego and finds it difficult to appear solid. England once had a golden generation which in my opinion was better than the current generation, but they failed to achieve success.

I think Germany and France deserve to be more favorites this time, followed by Portugal, England, Spain, Italy and Belgium. Of course, everyone has their own assessment, and it is possible that the list of favorite teams is completely wrong, because it could be that this time at Euro 2024 we will see a surprise team. Germany is a little lucky because it acts as host, and Italy is also the same because it has the status of defending champion.

Their tactics are all wrong, and they can't keep a clean sheet, which will be costly against top teams.
I believe that coaches always like to experiment during friendly games. Argentina lost their first game in the world cup and went onto win it because the loss brought the awareness to them that they can fail out of the competition. This loss can help England take every other game more seriously starting from the group stages.
England's problem is that there are too many talented player's in England's team for any coach not to get confused. Southgate is overwhelmed, making decisions is hard.

I support this notion of yours as I also believe that this English team is just merely full of hype and I don't feel they can even achieve such height again although am still not writing any team off just dropping my personal opinion. England is so filled with talent no doubt but there is something with managing the national team and selection of players that can blend up with a short period of time than taking of boys you are fund of for 38 weeks to be successful with them.

England have big names on their squad that's why many will see them as one of the favorite to win the tournament and I don't see that happening with the manager Southgate, he has been inviting same set of players and nothing to show for it. Players that ain't suppose to make the list he'd invite them, someone like Jack Grealish, he hasn't proven himself since the big money move to City only drinking, partying and while in the pitch he only throws himself to be tackled but he's been added to the squad, Harry Maguire isn't fit but he's included.
My worry is the players who are fit but won't get to showcase their abilities to help the 3 lions go forward. And if care isn't taken they might be kicked out too soon because we have stronger countries that are also favorite to win and I don't think England can withstand them when the time comes.

Friendlies results should be taken carefully and it does not tell the truth all the time even though a defeat against Iceland is still hard to swallow by England followers.
I find England performance dropping over the years, yet I believe they will play advanced stages in this competition. There is definitely mistakes done and hopefully Southgate will fix it. I think he swapped the position of these players intentionally to see what he could get?
Friendly matches do not affect the UEFA rankings, but this does not mean that England lost the match because it does not mean anything to them. The Iceland team should not be underestimated, they are a good team that can play well in attack, so I am not surprised that they scored a goal, but I was surprised that the England attack played so poorly, considering that they conceded at the beginning of the match, they did the whole game only one shot on target for Iceland in the first half.

The England national team comprises of elite players but they're just overhyped because all these players plays for elite clubs. England coach, Gareth Southgate selection should be reconsider because telling me England record defeat against Iceland is absurd. For goodness sake, England have all the squad accessible and available to win mediocre countries but they've failed woefully and this should be a lesson to them, they're not ready for the Euros because the coach still have to work on his lineup especially his starting XI.
England is overrated in football. Their tactics are all wrong, and they can't keep a clean sheet, which will be costly against top teams. They have players who can win games in a moment, but they'll need two or three of those moments against decent teams, which will be tough. Southgate already shocked everyone with their 1-0 loss to Iceland just one week before Euro 2024. How far can Southgate's side go at the Euros? We'll see. Friendlies are nothing like a real tournament match! Anyway, good luck ahead of EURO 2024.

I agree that the friendly games should be not taken that much seriously.
Watched also the review of the game between England against Iceland and there was for sure some chances to get a draw or even a win for England.
We also should not forget that the other teams form other countries getting better , have seen that from Greece vs Germany.
When the EM will be start there will be come some extra motivation to all teams.

I don't know why people are so fascinated with teams that come from so-called "big" countries and always think that they have to make big results regardless of the fact that there are other teams that are much better than them? The English are always arrogant and convinced that they are the best, but then they are beaten by a small Iceland in their home stadium - that kind of defeat must hurt a lot.

Some still remember how the Croats taught them a lesson in 2007 and defeated them at Wembley - bad then, bad even today - Modric played then, he still plays today Wink

England 2-3 Croatia [21-11-2007]

I think it is reasonable for people who fascinated with team that come from big countries, because we know that in this called "big" countries have their own great and famous players, and have more experiences. So it is the reason why people so fascinated, almost every people will give any support for idol player.

For example, if i choose Cristiano Ronaldo as my idol player, i will give all my support for him, not only for his club but also for his national team as he is still playing for his team. I don't really care if his team get a lost, i will keep my support for him and always want to see his struggle.
Well that's football for you it's not only that england are being pumpose of themselves because they have player or something else, I believe it's just normal for a player or fans to support their team even if the team isn't up to standard or class because in football anything can happen and before a team or the fans show pride alot then it means that they actually have a edge in seeing that they can win the game .

I agree with people who think Southgate shouldn't be England coach anymore if he fails in winning Euro 2024 as well.  Sad  So many years have been left behind but England have 0 title achieved. They have always had such an impressive squad in the meantime. But they just can't make it anyway. Unlike people who think Southgate is actually good, I think the opposite as a result.

If you still can't win any title with such a team in nearly 10 years then you still have a long way to go to be called as a good coach.

Many people think Southgate shouldn’t be England coach but I think they are right about that, yesterday's match of England against Iceland was very boring to imagine how England's players are playing like they are not the players that play in their team, imagine, Cole Palmer, Foden, Declan rice and all these young players in the squad can not play very well but when it comes to their team they will play very well, even Foden that is the premier league player of the season can’t play very well for his country, I think the fault is from the coach because, from the players he removed from the squad, I think he needs some of them, these young players can not take England to any level.

From the first time I saw the list of the players that are being removed I knew that something must happened to England squad, those players who I saw yesterday that played for England against Iceland can not win Euro for England, in fact they can’t even reach semi-final with the performance I saw yesterday, I think England needs a wing player that can help them, using Foden and Cole Palmer as a wing will not help the team at all, the team needs another wing player like Grealish to add to saka so that the team can play very well in Euro.

A lot of surprises on this friendly games so far right ? Romanian not being able to score 1 goals in 2 games against Bulgaria and today against Lichtenstein ( the odds were 1.04 for Romania to win and I must admit on my national tv it was a big scandal for not being able to score once ). Then we had England who lost against Iceland ? For real ? Iceland doesn't have a solid team anymore so I really don't understand how they lost this one because the first 11 players were all stars and most likely will all play at Euro.
Yes, Romania was unable to score a goal in two friendly matches. However, in my opinion, this is normal because of course the two countries that Romania played against were not weak teams. Although if you look at the head to head record of the two countries, Romania is superior. The reason is that in Romania's last two meetings with Leichtenstein, the result was that Romania was able to win both matches. Then in Romania's last meeting with Bulgaria, the result ended in a draw. Well, maybe this time Romania experienced a decline in performance to the point that they were unable to score a single goal in these 2 matches.

Then for England's match against Iceland, to be honest the result of this match was what surprised me the most. Because I personally don't think that England, which has many star players, will lose to Iceland. However, behind this defeat, maybe the England national team coach just wanted to see and try out the strategy in this match. Because of course this week is the last time to prepare players and strategies to be more mature in facing the Euro competition.

And today in a friendly match, Portugal will face Croatia. This match will definitely be very exciting to watch, because of course in this match we will see the extent of the strength that Ronaldo and his teammates have. I personally predict Portugal will win this match.

Unexpected scores always occur in friendly matches. Football players do not want to get injured and do not show their full performance. Teams avoid entering the competition. This is a very normal situation. Preparatory matches often do not show us the result of a real competition.

I was expecting a goal in Romania's match, but neither team managed to score a goal. It was a match that was below expectations, but this match does not show the true performance of both teams. These decreases in the performance of teams during the preparation periods are very normal.

England generally manages to surprise its viewers in its matches. Nobody expected such a score. It surprises football fans that a squad full of stars cannot score a goal. I attribute the main reason for this situation to be that this match is a preparation match.

I think the Portugal Croatia match will end in a draw. Neither team will push themselves too hard.

I don't have a problem with Maguire if his name is on the out list according to this source because Walker can play as a CB even though we often see him as an RB at his club.

~snip~

It looks like Maguire is suffering a muscle injury so that must be why Southgate removed him from the list. Otherwise I think he would have added him. But truthfully it is better not to have him.  Tongue  Because he has turned out to be a flop since he joined Manchester United. He isn't among reliable English defenders also.

When it comes to Walker, CB is a position in which he can play. But when we look at his whole career we see him playing there quite rarerly. It is better to have him as RB to cut fast wingers effectively.  Smiley

That defeat of the England national team is remembered not only in England) That defeat of the England national team led to the best performance of the Russian national team at the Euros in history, so the match is really memorable.
As far as I remember then this match broke the career of coach Steve McClaren and the goalkeeper of the England national team, unfortunately I do not remember his last name, but it seems that he did not play for the national team anymore.

As for England's defeat yesterday, this is the third game without a win at Wembley, before that there were defeats to Brazil and a draw with Belgium.
Most of all questions to Southgate, which having in the lineup Kane, Bellingham, Foden and Palmer could not build a game in attack and for the whole match England had seemingly only 1 shot at goal and in this playing against not the strongest team of Iceland.

So I would say that by the level of players now England is the Euro favorite and Southgate's team includes Kane, Bellingham, Palmer, Watkins, some of the best strikers in the world.
England has good players in every line. naturally, they will be favorites at this year's Euros. especially in the group phase, I'm sure it won't be too difficult for England to win the group.
I think after the group phase is finished, a strong competitor from England might host Germany. But let's see first how the performance of several countries that will be favorites will pass through the group phase.
For this year's Euros, I support Germany and England.
England have a very strong midfield and offense, probably the best in this tournament, but there are more questions with the defense. England have Trippier, Walker and Stones, but they play more with support in attack, but with central defenders I think it will be more difficult. It is also unclear who will be the main goalkeeper at this Euro, because Pickford has not had the best season at the club. Nevertheless, England can compensate all the problems in defense with an excellent offense and Slovenia, Denmark or Serbia do not seem to be difficult opponents.
Germany, even though it's a home Euro for them, I would not consider them favorites, unlike England or France.

Thank you very much for trying to see things differently. When I come online and see what people write about England and Southgate it makes me wonder what day think of England and what the reality is. We have seen England in so many finals under the management of Southgate, but it is quite unfortunate that no one counts that as success if you do not win the trophy. This about to start euro 2024, people have started predicting that England and Southgate will exit at the round of 16. But surprisingly to them all, they will still see England in the finals or semi-finals of the euro 2024 and yet they will not count that as a success. Let us be hopeful that one day Southgate will disappoint them and win one major trophy for England and all this disrespect for the English team will stop.

Gareth Southgate is not just that coach, and if you don't see it that way, I don't know how to convince you. He is not a good coach, and if England gets to win the European Competition, it's because the players want to win it, Gareth Southgate is a tactically poor coach, he should just focus on punditry for goodness sake. He reminds me of Ole Gunner Solskjaer who gives the players free will to play as I don't see him demanding more from them lads.

Even a coach who has won back to back trophies is not appreciated ( Erik Ten Hag.... A bit off topic. )and you want fans to appreciate that?

Secondly, I hate the fact that he is being linked with a move to replace Erik Ten Hag as the next manager of Manchester United. I breaks my heart because all I see is relegation calls. Manchester United will definitely suffer if they fail to back Erik Ten Hag. Going back to Gareth Southgate is like going back to David Moyes again. Lol. Shows how wacked and sentimental Jim Radcliffe and side can be.

FACTS: NO ENGLISH MANAGER HAS WON THE PREMIER LEAGUE COMPETITION TILL DATE. Not even Southgate would be able to win it for Manchester United.
