Bitcoin has dominated the market to about 70% and has gained the trust of the people more than Ethereum has done. Now, Bitcoin has turn out to become a standard of measure for most of the coins on the market and it is what the world is looking up to when it comes to cryptocurrencies. For Ethereum to displace Bitcoin, then it has to really restructure its services because Ethereum has already gained numerous competitors on the market especially a coin like Mixin (XIN).

It is difficult to imagine a situation where Ethereum will become the number 1 coin, if you look at the number of coins issued, the market will have to grow tens or maybe hundreds of times

That's certainly true, mate. Ethereum's supply is at an ever-growing rate. With an inflationary design, it looks highly unlikely that it'll become a valuable cryptocurrency in the future. This is where Bitcoin takes the lead, as it gains a higher level of demand than ETH over time. However, we all know that crypto behaves wildly sometimes. Ethereum could very well gain a massive boost in price that will allow it to overcome or become close to Bitcoin's market cap in the future. This trigger in price could be largely attributed towards "FOMO" as people become excited with ETH's recent developments (such as PoS and Sharding).

Still though, everything points to Bitcoin being the #1 cryptocurrency for the foreseeable future. Ethereum could complement Bitcoin in many ways, if it never manages to replace it. As of now, both cryptocurrencies have been doing fine delivering breakthrough innovations within the Blockchain space. It's only a matter of time before they experience massive adoption from people worldwide. What matters is usability on top of pricing. If Ethereum could become an extremely useful cryptocurrency, then it'll be here to stay for a long time. And that's ten times better, than reaching astronomical levels in price just to become the world's largest cryptocurrency by market cap. Just my opinion Smiley

although ethereum is also the biggest coin and also coin number two, if I think ethereum is also not possible to replace the existence of bitcoin at this time, because bitcoin is also the top coin and also the highest value
For ETH to be able to replace Bitcoin, Bitcoin needs to fall very badly, and ETH on the contrary has been doing very good and growing in value, but this is unlikely to happen

Or let's say bitcoin price doesn't fall and maintains its $10000 mark and Ethereum price grew 1000 percent above its current rate at $215, then we will be looking at a general marketcap almost doubling or tripling. I don't see the likelyhood of this scenerio playing out but then we can keep an open mind and have fun Wink

I don't see ethereum replacing bitcoin any time soon,  talk about the point of acceptance of bitcoin as compared to ethereum,  look at the market cap of bitcoin,  with such a huge supply that ethereum have,  it cannot overthrow bitcoin,  for ethereum to have such huge market cap of $179b it's gonna take a whole lots of years and I'm sure bitcoin market cap will also increase, ethereum cannot replace bitcoin,  bitcoin will still be number 1 in my opinion

i agree with you.
i think, there will be no other coins including ethereum that can shift the seat of bitcoin, so far investors still believe fully in bitcoin.

indeed ethereum is a good altcoin and investors also strongly believe in ethereum but ethereum is still unable to surpass the power of bitcoin.

It is true that Ethereum platform have many concepts and uses but Bitcoin already build a deep relationship with most of the crypto users as the most trusted crypto in the market. If ever Ethereum will be able to supersede Bitcoin as the number 1 crypto then there is nothing unusual as we are just changing the Currency name.

We cannot predict the future but in what is happening right now, there is a very little chance that it will happen in the next 5-10 years.

But we cannot close also the possibility as Ethereum has the advantages compare to bitcoin also so let's just see what will happen in the future. What ever happens, it will surely benefit all the crypto users especially if the crypto currencies will continue to advance.

if that happens, then ETH price will be on par with BTC price or higher. But I firmly believe that it will never happen

I don't think so. its hard for any coin to catch bitcoin. I think comparing between bitcoin and ETH. They are fundamentally very different form each other. Btc n is the first block chain based
Crypto. The half of the marketcap of the market  is in btc. In other hand ether is a platform based token. And the gap between their marketcap is huge its almost impossible to catch that. So I thing their is no chance that ETH will beat bitcoin

It will never happen , even many speculations that etherium will beat bitcoin and replaces it in the future it is not posible that bitcoin will be replace by any other cryptocurrencies. Etherium is like the queen of cryptocurrencies and so , a king (bitcoin) needs a queen , and that is all etherium stands.

I agree with you, but you never need to talk. There is always an opportunity. If it happens that the ethereum overtakes bitcoin, it will be a "black swan"

Ethereum need to hold out and not to give up their positions in front of other altcoins. There is no sense to talk about the victory over bitcoin. Over the past six months, Ethereum has only fallen in price relative to Bitcoin. Even a strong breakthrough in Ethereum technology will not be able to give it a big advantage over Bitcoin.

With what is happening around crypto space now i don't see how it will be possible for any coin to beat bitcoin, ETH is capable coin but not the extent of winning over bitcoin just like that, many prefer bitcoin over eth and that is not going to change anytime soon

I believe bitcoin is going to be around for life. 30years, a 100 and bitcoin would be solid as gold. Very costly and a good percentage bought, used and held by the government like Gold is used today. Ethereum and some other coins might be what we know bitcoin to be now, in circulation and mainstream.
It’s really good to have discussions like this. Smart communities and organizations are thinking what a world fully supporting cryptocurrency would mean for the top/most promising cryptocurrencies by marketcap and adoption.

Theoretically, ETH can of course replace Bitcoin, but in reality, so far, no alts have and will not be able to get close to Bitcoin
In theory and reality, ETH will never replace BTC. BTC is unique and no altcoin can ever achieve its value

The gap between the two (BTC and ETH) will always be wide. Bitcoin remains the pace setter and king, others are just alternatives, so let's not forget that in a hurry. I understand your points are valid, Ethereum has been good with developments although slow and steady. But I really do not think any altcoin can ever replace BTC someday.

Good point. There's still a large gap between both cryptocurrencies, especially in terms of market cap. Ethereum overcoming Bitcoin in the future, seems to be a wild prediction. But, anything could happen in the uncertain world of crypto. I've seen many times how XRP have climbed up towards becoming the second largest cryptocurrency by market cap overcoming Ethereum in an instant. But in the short term, ETH regains its rightful place on the market. I believe that the same thing might happen with Bitcoin in the future, as Ethereum grows towards new levels in price and demand because of its breakthrough upgrades for scalability. Of course, Bitcoin may bounce back towards it's rightful place on the market but no one knows what exactly will happen by then.

As of now, both Bitcoin and Ethereum have been doing great within the crypto space. They could complement each other, instead of replacing one another. If Bitcoin remains at its top position in market cap for a very long time, then it'll be nearly impossible for another altcoin to take its position on the market. With ever-growing development and innovation on both sides (BTC and ETH), they could become the leaders of the crypto industry as we know it. All in all, the much-awaited upgrade for the Ethereum blockchain will change things for the better (hopefully). Just my thoughts Grin

actually ethereum is also a promising coin, but for me if ethereum replaces bitcoin I think it will also be difficult, because bitcoin is also the most important and most powerful coin, so I think it will also be difficult to replace bitcoin.
