Not easy to choose coins having just 500$. But anyway always keep 30-40% of your portfolio in BTC, it's secure and checked many times strategy,that works.

I think you can invest in Altcoins, and maybe you can spend a few percent to invest in Bitcoin, Monitor all ICO, choose wisely. It is a gamble if you invest on an ICO that you may think that would rise in the future.
$500 is not a big amount but you carefully handel it. you invested two or tree other ico token buy now... i hope you successful that,s amount.

I consider Ethereum a good coin, but in terms of profitability ICO far exceeds the purchase of a certain coin.
