God gives us hardships in life so that we people will seek his help, God is just trying to know who among us is the right one to go in his home in heaven. Praying is not actually a waste of time, research says that praying is actually good for health, it's like counseling but instead of saying your problems to the counselor you say it God.
People pray because they believe that God is supporting them. In your explanation what your trying to say is that people pray for their own needs, making them look selfish. Although there are people who pray to God to motivate them or give them hope, there are also people that thinks that God will give them what they want, these people are douchebags, they will get nothing from only praying. People who pray often get what they want because they work hard for it, while these people who sit and wait for their prayers to come true will have nothing but false hope.
Prayer gives people hope for a better future and this is not selfish at all, but the normal need for each person to live better.
Prayer is the spiritual need that man needs in his life. Man is the one who needs God, not the other way around. By praying and remembering Allah our hearts are serene, avoid spiritual diseases such as anxiety, fear, anxiety, hesitation and so on.
Anxiety, fear, (anxiety again), hesitation... are not diseases...
Anxiety and fear are based on the fight or flight response... it gets your adrenaline pumping so you can think faster and make a good/fast decision, particularly when your life depends on it
Hesitation is not a bad thing either... you certainly don't want to make rash/uneducated decisions... it's usually best to hesitate and critically think about a decision, weighing the pro's and con's, etc (assuming you have time and aren't in a life/death situation, but then you'd be in the fight/flight mode as described above)
Serenity is not a good thing either... it's complacency... it causes the biggest problem of them all... the one which currently threatens the long-term health of the planet...

Religion encourages you to be happy with doing nothing, so that evil will triumph
By praying we have been grateful for the blessings of God who has given us life. By praying our hearts become calm, which connects the human and the god
Praying is part of our culture, we believed that there is God. We are praying because we want to be saved. We are praying because we want someone who can listen to us, We are praying because we want to be forgiven. We are praying because we know that God is always there to listen for us, to guide us, and give what we deserved in life.
If you really think about it, you are being a total douche when you pray for anything

"Hey god, I know you don't want to give me a new car, but I want it anyway"
"Screw your perfect/divine plan god, I want a new car... me me me me me me, it's all about me"

It is because man is created by God, it is necessary for man to have connection with God. Prayer is how we communicate with God, it's our way to strengthen our relationship with Him and for us to overcome the trials or obstacles that comes in our way.
People do pray because we believe in Hevenly God who created us and watching us from heaven. People pray because they have wishes or they are on distsress so they ask God for guidance and thanking God for everyday blessings and never-ending love through prayer.
When I was a kid and I believed in God (because my parents were religious and they kept telling me he's watching and helping me) I used to pray every day before going to bed so that he keeps me from harm and in good health. It's natural for people to wish themselves all best and look for anything that can improve their chances of a long and prosperous life.
People nowadays only pray whenever they are in trouble. In times of happiness, they often forget to thank God and praise him.
Prayer is peace of mind. Don't knock it until you try it.

Sir, you can actually depends on your faith and have a wonderful life on this planet earth. Prayer is a command from God himself as a sign that we don't know what he knows and we depends on him for supply of every good things. Op, I will like to ask this question! Have you ever ask your father anything when you could not provided them yourself? God is our father and we should ask him to give us what is good for our lives.
Calling on to a higher power gives people a sense of control. Humans like that. That's why they do stuff like light up candles and pray and give offerings. Humans have been trying to buy gods' favors for a long time.

There are instances in the bible where People were able to change God's will for their lives by praying, Example read the book of Isaiah chapter 38. But if what you want will brng you misery, I think God is going to deny that request.
