It’s due to country general overview about gambling. Gambling in general is viewed negatively in my country since we have a very strong belief on religion. We bunch different religion here that shows how my country is a fanatic of having faith to deity.
I personally don’t want to gamble publicly due to my privacy. I usually gamble with huge bankroll which I’m not comfortable to show in public to avoid potential problem in future. They may feel comfortable not to gamble in the public and it is possible that they do not see it as hiding but as something just normal for them to do because they may think it is better to let it be that way. But if gambling is not legal in your country, that means they can not gamble in public.
There are other people who wants to gamble alone and they didn't want to let other people see them doing that kind of activity, I bet that they want to gamble privately to avoid hearsays from other people specially from their relatives who talks a lot once they knew that they are participating in that kind of activity. When the time is right they will use it against you, I have seen this played out a few times before so people are now hiding from the public eye, I have never entered into a casino nearby to gamble and that's why I prefer online casinos because no one will know that I am gambling.

From what I've personally noticed and based on how society sees gambling, I believe it's quite the opposite. Most gamblers are seen as broke and will do anything to feed their addiction. I get it if you're talking about cryptocurrencies; if you say you have Bitcoin, then you're potentially viewed as someone who's quite wealthy, which is the main reason I avoid talking about it, but with gambling? That's what I also think: card games such as poker are usually illegal in public, but despite that, gambling is still generally frowned upon by society. In my community majority of the people surrounding me believe that anyone who indulges in the act of gambling is “wayward” and cannot become something good in life and to eradicate such images people tend to gamble in secret places.
Personally, I don’t make my gambling activities known to other (except those that are extremely close to me) and what I stated above also contributes to it.
I guess, it depends on where you are living at. How gambling is perceive in your area, will give you the tactics how you approach at gambling. Some are hiding for other people not to know what they are doing. But in most cases, gambling has negative connotation in the community. Hence, they don't want to disclose to others that they are into gambling.

I think it all depends on the location and the environment that you are. Some environments forbid gambling in an open environment, in the sense that if you are gambling you are not expected to be flaunting it out there. So it has become a norm in such kind of environment for people to hide when they are gambling and in that regards you won't be surprised if you find people truly hiding themselves when they gamble.
But in societies where gambling is not seen as anything or not even something that has been put to ban by the government, like the way it in Middle East. some Western countries, don't see any reason why someone should be afraid gambling. And there have been buildings in the Western world where gambling is not seen as an issue. People go into such businesses real-time, businesses like casino and so on and they have never been scared of the public or even try to hide it from the general public. Rather, it becomes a centre where people come and have fun.
