It might be illegal to gamble cards in the country, that could be the reason why the guys are hiding. In Nigeria, non skilled card games are considered illegal and players can be arrested.

OP I don’t think you take your safety seriously. How can you see a group of guys in hidden spot and decide to go join them? That’s the most stupid thing ever. They could be thieves or worse. There is a saying “curiosity killed the cat.” I hope your curiosity doesn’t get you into trouble one day.

Might not be hiding in the first place? Might just be what they're used to really. Whatever they use is whatever they want to anyway, same with the method of letting their stakes be used in the next round instead of them  getting it immediately.

To the question itself though, probably of societal norms. While in some places it's normal to gamble, in some it's still pretty heavily frowned upon and some people consider a dent in their social life to be a situation similar or even worse to death, so they cover it up. Nothing new there tbh, it's not just gambling, some people hide some pretty stupid stuff just because THEY "think" that it's bad or doesn't match their image.
It's more of the latter though, why would they do and play in a abandon place and then they hide their money and only the cards are exposed? It's obvious that they don't want to be caught by the police playing in the streets, simply as that. But we can't blame them, for sure majority of us has been in this kind of situation before, playing in some obscure places or even at our home, but everything is lock so that no one can enter and discover that you are playing illegally. So yeah, nothing new, but the usual gamblers who plays in public places and wanted to not get captured.

We know that gambling is a game that includes many other games where people get bets just to play a tough game not for the sake of money. In the most developed countries, they consider gambling as a game but there are others. world countries that banned gambling and some religions also forbid gambling. So in this case the gamblers who bet on money to increase their profits gamble and for that, they start searching for a place where people can rarely go there. According to me I think they hide themselves so that other people can't see them and won't inform them. the corps and the second reason may they get uncomfortable when people are on their grounds.
Its kind of always wierd seeing young adults gathering in a building that isn't completed just to gamble on their property or bet on rolling dice and whot card games.
If I were the cops, that's the best place to smack some sense into them and it just shows they are still immature and they depend on peoples opinion to feed and survive daily.

A responsible person with principles will know their lifestyle demands good kind of privacy that even if seen gambling or betting, it won't lead to much squabble, or instead they just have the apps on their Internet enabled devices.

I was walking down my street this evening I saw some group of guys in a hidden corner of an uncompleted building playing WHOT games ordinarily I felt they are just spending usual time as friends and that they are playing the WHOT game to keep themselves busy while discussing.

But when I got closer to them I discovered that there was a dirty container close to them and inside the container is money they bet for the game they are playing , and if not careful observed you will never believe that they are playing bet games .

My curiosity led me closer to them I was interacting with one of them and at same time observing what they are doing , one thing I observed was that they stake with huge amount and they don’t give you change even when your money requires change instead you will use it and bet for another round.

So at this point I decided to bring it here to know or see different views from different intellects here on why some do some people hide just to gamble or if it is the best way to gamble ?.

From my perspective, people choosing hidden spots to gamble, like the group you encountered, is primarily about seeking privacy and avoiding judgment. Gambling, especially in informal settings, often carries a stigma, and participants may wish to avoid the disapproval of family, friends, or the community. In areas where gambling is restricted or illegal, privacy also helps avoid legal consequences, making secluded spots appealing for those activities.

However, I wouldn’t say that hiding to gamble is the best way to gamble. This method often lacks the regulation, security, and accountability that established and legal gambling venues provide. While it may offer a sense of freedom and escape from oversight, it also increases risks such as unfair gameplay and potential conflicts among participants without any formal recourse.

Agree. Gambling should ideally be a responsible activity, conducted in a safe and regulated environment where the rights and well-being of all participants are protected. Engaging in hidden gambling activities can sometimes escalate into problematic behaviors due to the lack of checks and balances that regulated environments provide.

For my own Theory I will say that the reason why people hide and gamble is because they know quite well that gambling in some countries some the gambles have not be legalized, so I believe that gambling is something that people do like to participate depending on the religion the person is into, like in my country people who is a real Christian doesn't associate themselves with gambling why people who is also a Muslim doesn't like gambling is people who is religion less that participate in gambling so those ones that called themselves a religious people is one that hide and gamble, myself I don't hide and gamble because I don't belong in any one

What? You want them to gamble openly? In public? You know how society works and its a norms that gambling is treated a a bad thing ot bad influence that why you will never see anyone that will play gambling in public places or openly, they will either hide or have a privacy and its a common thing, in my country there is a law about gambling in public, meaning you cant operate a gambling outlet or place unless you will have a permit and approval from authority, government are very strict with people gambling publicly because it is not a good display to the public and for sure many people will stare and glare at you, that's why what you see group of people, they are not hiding they are just having their privacy and its common not to openly play with a lot of people around, its a common thing.

Normally, gambling is something that shouldn't be done in an open space, when I say open space, I mean open space I mean somewhere that's not meant to be accessed easily, it should be somewhere that has some sort of boundaries. This is because gambling is not an activity that everyone can feature or participate in, especially minors, so if it's done in an open place where minors can easily access, even if they don't participate, they can be able to witness what's going on there, and when they start witnessing such activities, they'll start developing the urge to participate, and before you know it, they'll form a gambling peer group, where they'll be practicing gambling. And when kids start growing up with such exposure, their chances of involvement in early gambling becomes high and we all know what that means. So to answer your question. One reason they chose to gamble in secret is because of the minors.

There have been times in my life where I had to hide certain things, and there's been times in my life where I felt hiding those things was justified, and at times not so much.  If you're a responsible gambler who's hiding their gambling from their spouse or loved ones because they simply don't like it, I would suggest one take a look at their situation and double check that they want to be in it.  To me, I shouldn't have to hide my gambling, lack of belief in a higher being and things of that nature just to appease someone.
If a player hides the game, it means he has something to lose and he is afraid of this and the consequences. There are players who live for more than 10 years with their family and never admit that they play or place bets. Because one of the options may be that his loved ones will react very negatively to this and may even kick him out of the family and not allow the children to see their father, because he has been labeled as an addicted gambler. Although this may not be true at all, some people simply expect the worst. I also wouldn’t want anyone from my close circle to know that I gamble, because some would definitely stop communicating with me and were afraid that I would start borrowing money uncontrollably for this. Although I play responsibly and do not lend money to anyone.

People hide it for obvious reasons.  Either 1 they aren't supposed to be gambling.  Say a family man is gambling away his families money they love on, of course they don't want you to see or to know.  But then second and probably more important if it's a private game and not online or a brick and mortar bet house they probably don't want to get revved.  Those types of robberies are common since they know cash and possibly lots of it will be available.

Playing gambling in the public may look irresponsible especially when they noticed that are not up-to the age bracket they may decides to hide themselves to remove much attention from them, sometimes people do hide themselves so that not everyone would see them on what they are doing. It could be that are very close to their home or their parents has been observing the kind of activities that is going on within their cycle of friends therefore would hide to gamble properly or maybe since money involved during argument they don't want external body to hear them so they look for another cool and calm place to continue their gambling actives.

So at this point I decided to bring it here to know or see different views from different intellects here on why some do some people hide just to gamble or if it is the best way to gamble ?.
There are many factors that can answer that question. Laws about gambling might be not allowed there so they hide because typically wherever you are located, there are laws that don't allow people to just gamble in the street or any public place even if it's on the hidden side of the street, and it's not a private property still, they're gambling on a public area. Also, they simply want peace and privacy and that's how they get to gamble together because it's like "minding your own business" for them and they don't mind people that pass by on them because they mind theirs.

And if we're going to discuss about this in general why most gamblers are hiding their gambling activities, it's about that we don't want our families and friends know that we're gamblers. There's a big taboo for the gamblers and we don't want to get humiliated with that belief and that's why many gamblers just choose to hide their gambling activities and they don't tell it to anybody until they're discovered that they're a heavy gambler and they're losing a lot of money and doing crazy things like selling their important stuff to keep on with their addiction.

There are many reasons for this, gambling could be illegal in the particular jurisdiction a person lives and they need to hide, there could be very negative views held against gamblers even if gambling was legal, some people just like their privacy, gambling itself could be legal but your favorite way to gamble could be illegal, the money those people were betting was obtained to begin with through illegal means and they cannot afford to let anyone else know they have so much money and so on, so as you can see the explanations for this behavior are basically endless.
There are already many cause for concerns when you see a group of boys bent down by the street corner or in an alley playing this type of card game. There is already a stereotype surrounding these group of boys, they are the "bad guys". The ones who are involved in petty crimes and exploitation in the community. And are always in trouble with the police. This is why they hide out of plain site or rather they stay at a position that gives them the vantage point and advantage to scamper for safety trouble ensues.

What you don't understand is romance. The thought of being watched gives you a nice andrenaline rush. Although, maybe the game was played with not quite honest money - and this is the only way to "whitewash" them a little. Although another person's soul - darkness, and no one can get into another person's head

Most people don’t want people to know that they are gambler, and I don’t blame them for that, in most communities, gambling is always taken as bad activities, actually I don’t blame most people that tag gambling as a bad activity, I blame the gamblers for that, if you see some crazy things which addicted gamblers do in the society just because they want to gamble, then you are going to feel bad when you see people gambling. Some addicted gamblers sell properties, they steal from the society just to get money to gamble which is really a bad behavior, things like things are why most people don’t like gambling.

Exactly, they see gambling as a bad thing because they are addicted to it, and when you are addicted to gambling, whenever you don't have money to bet, you will do anything to get money so that you can bet, and he caused some people to sell all of their properties to just bet, and they are not 100% sure that the game will come, and when he cut them, they will still try to get another money to bet, and he leads to theft and causes you many problems, you can't even have So people urge them to reduce betting so that you won't be addicted to it, and because they don't want to reduce betting, they will be hiding it so that they won't know what is going on,  they will think they are not on bet anymore. What I see on bet even you have source of income when you are addicted to gambling you won't get plan to use your money to do nessasary thing anytime your plan is how to bet in the next match.

What do you expect, they are gambling in public places, and perhaps gambling is illegal in your country that's why they are hiding it. Just really sure what WHOT is but from search is seems that it's a card game so yeah, money could be involved here.

So don't be surprised that they are hiding it in plain sight, and even if gambling is legal to your country, the mere fact that they are doing it publicly, and it cause public disturbance is not good to the police. You just don't know, you already said that huge money is involved already, and just a simple misunderstanding on the player side could result in violence.

Due to troubles and arguments that erupt from such kind of gambling, the cops don't like seeing roadside gambling by some groups of people. They could be deceptive on other naive passersby who would want to gamble with them, thereby extorting all the player's money using some methods that may never guarantee a win for the naive player. I've listened to a friend's complaint about this type of gambling and how he never won a dime. These players have mastered those Whots and find means of cheating each other, hence they're targets for cops, and that's why most of the time they hide while gambling.

I was once curious about them hiding outside instead of indoors, but it seemed clearer that these players were not close friends and may not have trusted one of them to welcome all the players in his apartment. In pursuit of victims, they also stay in hidden places where they can be seen to attract those who wish to play with them. Hence, it's fine to be observant of gambling activities in your environment. Distancing from such practices is better, playing in a well-known casino or online is quite great for any gambler who wishes to stay clear of troubles or arguments.
