The monero.cc forum has an off-topic board Smiley

Sure I know that. Still doesn't necessarily mean that people wouldn't be interested in the idea.

What idea is that? You mean an off-topic Monero thread on BCT? You create and I'll follow!

1 person is good enough. i mean whats the worst that can happen? the thread dies on the vine? they don't cost anything to make Smiley

*edit* i dont think i can get away with putting it in the altcoin section. badbear will probably chastise me. it will have to go in off topic i think.

my bitmonerod is stuck.  When I run it, I get this message (block 498962 was about 12h ago according to some explorer web site):

Additionally, when I run simplewallet, it says "Starting refresh" then hangs for ages and then says:

Error: refresh failed: no connection to daemon. Please, make sure daemon is running. Blocks received: 0

I don't really want to start again and download the whole blockchain.  Can anyone help with troubleshooting these issues?

It doesn't look like you need to download the whole blockchain. It seems you have a valid blockchain file that got loaded there. You can try starting with --log-level=2 or log-level=3 and see what sort of activity/progress it shows.

Sometimes im tempted to want to talk to people who are involved in monero about non monero related topics and i feel awkward doing it here. What do you guys think of the idea of making a thread for this community for off topic discussion?

So, you have stopped it and restarted it?
Yes.

You shouldn't have to download the entire blockchain, as your computer should have stored up to the point where it got stuck, or at least somewhere near that point.

I get this is the case in theory, but it's just not progressing / catching up.

Others (Devs maybe) can possibly be of more help, but it will assist them if you tell us what Operating System and which version of the daemon you are running.

Ubuntu 14.10, bitmonero v0.8.8.6 compiled from source.

Run the command "print_cn" on the daemon, that should give you a list of connected peers. If you don't see anything and you are on Windows, then it's likely to be a problem with bitmonerod being blocked by Windows' firewall.

a win8.1/64bit PE bootable stick. If the persistent image contain the XMR wallet and the DB is written to the USB/Local HDD, that would've been awesome.

Oman this would be so cool if an entrepreneur could package this in the form of a monero application specific device that was 100% plug and play with an environment designed to prevent them from being able to make security mistakes. I would probably pay way too much for that. Or even if the devs could some day produce a developer signed bootable image.

^^^ I dream of a device like this for Monero daily^^^   Off network cold wallet storage device but can be plugged in to transfer or pay with.

You should watch USB Armory from InversePath Smiley
