Inflation is a serious issue, I am afraid it may kill XMR

We've designed Monero to be slightly inflationary and not deflationary (see OP).

A massive increase in Monero's value will not come from us tweaking magical numbers to create fake scarcity so that "investors" are artificially rewarded. It will come from Monero being useful and usable (in time) to an ever larger potential number of users (which right now it isn't, the barrier to entry is still high from a technical perspective) and there being services built around Monero or that accept Monero with whom privacy is an essential aspect (and there are many use-cases for this beyond the Silk Road...what about a younger person who wants to pay for access to a dating site without his parents knowing his sexual orientation from the credit card bill?)

A dating site is just one of huge number of projects that can be done for Monero usage.

- VPN
- web hosting
- domain names
- porn? (why not - everyone likes a bit of it and everyone likes privacy)

and so on ... only those I mentioned are a large spectrum of wide web of the world.

In my cursory investigation of sites that already accept bitcoin that should accept monero (due to desire for privacy... such as adult toy sites) I came across the fact that BitPay is everywhere.

Any idea how to build a BitPay for Monero? Payero?

Totally deluding himself if he thinks that Bitcoin even has a chance of integrating CN tech. Tongue

Gmaxwell/Andytoshi are planning to implement it as a Bitcoin sidechain, although that would have to wait until sidechains in general exist. Right now they're in their infancy.

too much centralization in one coin Cheesy

I'll reiterate my thoughts from Reddit on this -

Quote
The biggest issue I have with sidechains is not the technical merits or lack thereof, but rather that we will be indelibly linked (economically speaking) to Bitcoin, and thus to Bitcoin's price.

In other words, any XMR - USD market will have to go via Bitcoin.

The economic consequences alone make it important for us not to become a sidechain.

The same reason is why anyone shoehorning the tech into a sidechain won't magically give that sidechain an audience or a reason for existence.

Upgraded to 0.8.8.6  and when exiting the daemon, well it just doesn't.  It gives the proper messages as to what it is doing but the blockchain doesn't get stored.  The second time I exited I came back over an our later and I had to just close it.

I just tried again and same thing.  This time I checked to see if the HDD was active as if it was writing and it was for the entire time.
windows 8.1

If the hard disk is active then it is likely saving but just taking a very long time. You are probably a bit short of RAM.

I synced the daemon just before I updated and it worked.

Update.  I tried again last night and it worked.  I don't know how long it took as I feel asleep for a bit over an hour.  RAM usage during writing to disk totaled 75%, I have 4GB.

Hopefully not too long from now I will once again have a real computer.  It will of course have a SSD.  How much space will the blockchain need now, in a year, in 3 years?

I'm not usually interested in altcoins myself, but I can see how people can enjoy them. Most altcoin "investing" is a lot like gambling. I can see how trying to navigate and manipulate these tiny markets could be fun for a lot of people. These pump-and-dump altcoins aren't really competitors to Bitcoin: they're really a way of using your bitcoins to gamble. There are also a handful of technologically interesting altcoins like Monero, which I think are very useful for testing new ideas that might one day be incorporated into Bitcoin.

Someone needs to update the blockchain download in the OP, the current one is something like 90 days behind.

Edit: The windows one, haven't checked the others.

talking about markets and monero - is anybody working on multisigs? can somebody say some words about this?
that is a crucial thing to have with a proper wallet (and i2p integration).
multisigs might make a big difference, new p2p markets are starting and this is a must have feature

The Monero Research Lab is working through the academic and research portion of this. There's literally no point in implementing multisig without full ring signature support, and so this requires some careful thought to get it right (cryptographically speaking). Just like with everything we do that is integral and deeply tied into Monero, we have to apply the appropriate amount of care, as people's lives and their livelihood can depend on it later on.
