Yeah it is getting towards the end for me too. You can still make money but it is way to hit and miss (has been for quite some time really). Yesterday double, today likely a small loss.

I run $20/mo Linode instances. They end up coming out to $0.02737/hr for an 8-core system.
As long as each box mines ~3 blocks in 30 days, I'm golden.

I have a couple of linodes as well, but they are very spread in performance. They average at about 5 cores (you only get garanteed 1 core), that perform at about half a xeon each. My 4 core ramnode performed way better (except you can't run structural CPU usage there). If I take the average in performance decline over the last weeks, I seriously doubt one should get one for xpm mining alone. You might get lucky and get a block a week, but it might just as well cost you.

I don't have a crystal ball. Alpha testing on mtrlt's miner suggested an early 25x advantage for GPU's (mind you, high end GPU vs 1 CPU core, but promising). Even if it was the same speed as your CPU, it'd essentially double a desktop's mining speed than it currently is and at least provide some parity with VPS's.

However, getting ROI is hazardous (hint: GPU miners coming) so only on pre-owned servers, I would say Grin

VPS are currently barely breaking even AFAIK

i'm still soloing on a dual core laptop and a single core vm and I get the occasional block every 1 - 2 weeks. its no much but i dont pay for electricity so it doesnt hurt for me to just keep running it. either way, still able to solo mine on some crappy hardware.

I make more solo mining, however, the payouts are sporadic.
